Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

Hugs @PeppiPatty your mil s problems are so many try not to take them as yours if you know what I mean. People like that with such strong opinions don't seem to hear or see the truth that you are probably the most kind and nurturing person for your husband. And by the way she so quickly came to a 'conclusion' and jumped into her car and left she is looking for negatives that aren't there.
You know your own truth 🙂 believe in yourself 💕
How's the new exercise thingymajig going?

Re: Night Shift

Hey @PeppiPatty, Very cool that you will be sending your cousins cards. It's a rare gift to receive something like that. I hope it brings you closer to your cousins. Over the past several years Facebook has been very connecting for me and cousins and other family who live far away. Some of them I didn't even know their married surname before we found each other on FB. This led to us seeing each other for the first time in decades and, as you know, just recently I met a first cousin in person for the first time ever. This is not an ad for FB, by the way, lol. How wonderful that you will be visiting your son soon.

Re: Night Shift

7.00am and I've been up all night again. Three nights in a row now. And two full days of computing in between. I keep telling myself to go to bed now as I remain seated in front of the computer. I am okay. My mood feels even, though my behaviour does not, and I've enjoyed a lot of the night time net wandering. But I am exhausted and feeling feral and it's hard to comprehend why I keep falling into this when I have better intentions for self care. Thanks for listening. Soon I will sleep.

Re: Night Shift

hi dear @Mazarita,

that is not good, i am having trouble sleeping to. not as bad as you though, please keep a close eye on your moods as lack of sleep can play havoc with our MH.

being a techie of 20 + years, i know from a long experience computers are not good when it comes to sleeping, when i am gaming or coding it takes me about 1 hour to "come down" from hyper arousal of a computer screen and what you are working on, it is so easy to lose track of time i have had 2_3 day binges on the computer myself, and with video editing it is even worse because of the intense concentration required.

i set my alarm for 11pm, what ever i am doing at the time, no matter how important, all my computers get turned of, all 3 pc's my tablet and my phone, if i can't sleep i read a book, but i never touch a computer after my alarm goes off. this allows my hyper arousel time to settle before bed.

i hope this helps @Mazarita, i know computers can be addictive, i have had addictions to computers in the past.

take care

jacques

Re: Night Shift

oh dear @Mazarita I'm sorry you havent slept. When i can't sleep like that i know i struggle. I hope you are able to wind down a bit and sleep. I think sometimes when I'm feeling productive or finally getting through things i don't want to stop because im scared i'll lose the motivation to keep on with it when i come back to it again.

take care of you gently,

LJ

Re: Night Shift

Thanks @Jacques and @Former-Member. I've had 3 hours sleep but am still feeling feral and exhausted. Last night it wasn't even video editing, just repetitive behaviour going around the same little circuit of sites, over and over all night. Hard to explain why.

@Jacques I was in early on the computer uptake too, on the keying and operation side of things. I had my first job as a console operator on mainframes around 1980, when I was 18. First PC in 1988. First big social engagement on the net in the mid 90s on IRC chatrooms. That led to a major event in my life that put the final touches to the destruction of my marriage. @Jacques, your advice about turning off all the devices at 11pm is good and my psychologist has suggested something to that effect too. I'm not sure how effectively I'll manage to do it just now though. At times like last night I seem to have this wild child in me who simply doesn't do what she's told no matter what. I'll keep trying to improve with this though. I have made some progress over recent months. I don't want to continue to trash that as I have over the past few days.

@Former-Member You are so on the ball with the observation that part of this obsessive behaviour is to do with being afraid that once I let the ball drop on whatever I'm doing I won't be able to get back into it again. It's happened many times in the past that I lose motivation with things after initial momentum. Good advice to go gently today. I will be going slow and doing that.
