Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

Occasional help with hampers and food vouchers ... planting ... my interests are social justice, the environment and music and lit. I live with my adult son.

I am driven .... type A personality ... but not driving at the moment

Re: Night Shift

I'm interested in social justice and the environment too (my agender adult child calls it "climate justice". They are very involved with the Australian Youth Climate Coalition). Was it you was posting a couple of weeks ago about enjoying late night music with your son? I've thought about volunteering with Food Bank when the time is right. Seems a worthy organisation.

Re: Night Shift

Yes I do music with him.

It is good if we can share basic values like that with our children .... what does agender mean? In my days there was bi-sexual but that doesnt seem to be in use any more. I have a gay daughter.

Re: Night Shift

Bi-sexual is still used, but that is about sexual preference for having lovers of either gender and still basically interprets gender identity as being only male or female. Gender identity is different from sexual preference and is actually a spectrum where a person can identify as anywhere between male and female or as neither (as in this situation). It is a type of being transgender. They have come out since being married to a man and are also now a parent - and I'm pleased to say the family relationship and marriage are going strong. It's been a huge learning curve for me to get used to the appropriate language they have instructed me works for them. Yes it's confusing sometimes, especially for other friends who haven't heard as much about it, but basically "they/their" can be used as a singular reference as well as plural and it's still correct english. Believe me, many references were given in my education by them. Very hard for my Mum to conceptualise tho'.

How was it for you when your daughter came out, or did she and you deal with it smoothly?

Re: Night Shift

My daughter came out fairly young ... about 14 ... her girlfriend from school wanted to meet me ... I was fairly accepting and am probably a bit agender myself ... and had one gay experience ... I also remember loving the idea that we should be androgenous ... my relationship with her is not great but it is not because of her sexual orientation or preference. She is doing well ... its complicated ... I would actually like to talk more about it with you ... as you are dealing with something similar ... but I think it best I try and get some sleep tonight. Lovely to meet you @eth Hope we can talk again soon.

Re: Night Shift

For anyone around on the early night shift, we've gone a little halloween gothic tonight at our place with masks, black clothing and jewellery. Listening to a CD I made years ago called 'Other'. It has experimental music, odd bluegrass, classical fused with drum n bass and other weird and wonderful sounds... What's happening with you?

Hi @Appleblossom, @eth, cool to see you chatting here last night too.

Re: Night Shift

I had 3 gorgeous scary critters at my door today ... so I put on a suitably showy scream for their delight .. I didnt have candy or any sweets in house at all .. so gave them coins and said "I dont do candy, do you accept cash" the older girl reassured the little boy with a knowing ... she's a mum ....

Re: Night Shift

Cool that you got to have a showy scream on Halloween, @Appleblossom. I agree with what you've said elsewhere about the American-ness of it. But I'm sometimes just 'what the hell' anyway.

Re: Night Shift

@Mazarita sounds like fun. I'm just home alone doing this.
