Does a diagnosis really help?

Does a diagnosis really help?

I am interested on hearing what people around here think.

I personally have put off getting a proper diagnosis for years because I didn't think it would help me. I'm very ambivalent about it. Sometimes when things are bad I think about it but then I come out of it and convince myself I don't need the label. I seem to keep ping ponging back and forth.

I already take medicine and as far as I know that is the only treatment, so it's not like I would get better treatment with a diagnosis.

The thing is I have suffered with this for years and it might make me feel a little better about myself to relinquish some of the responsibility - i.e. to not think of myself as at fault or as a bad person but just as having a difficult disease. It might, however make me feel worse to think of myself as having this disease that there is no cure for that I have no control over. At least if I think of myself as 'bad' I can imagine I have some control over that. That one day I will just stop being bad.

Sigh. Just not sure.

Hi @Faith-and-Hope
You caught me lurking.
I've noted that your world is a bit rocky at the moment. One step at a time works and do remember to breathe 💕

Hi DefiantPanda,

There is lots I could say about medical conditions and medication, however most in this forum have likely heard it all before. I would just like to share a lightbulb moment I had a number of years ago.

I was trying to get to the bottom of some phobias of mine and was talking with my heart surgeon, trying to describe to him what was going on in my life that was causing me great stress. I told him that I had done a lot of research, and to my way of thinking, it seemed to match best with PTSD. His response was that I was correct, and that most adults that had the same kind of surgery at the age I did were affected by PTSD.

It may not seem like much, but from that time onward, and through subsequent diagnoses I was no longer that weirdo with issues. It became something you could almost touch. Likewise, knowing that I "coped" for all those years without a diagnosis, or medication, is still empowering since I have made it despite chains holding me down. Others who call themselves normal were able to get there, but they didn't have the baggage.

Don't be afraid of a diagnosis, you may just find it empowering.

Well sai @Patriot3734. I have no fear of my diagnosis. Sometimes I have fears of my symptoms. But I'm not ashamed to have depression anxiety and ptsd. I did nothing wrong. I just have those MI's due to circumstances.
And I had a number of years where I coped beautifully. On my way back to that life soon.
A diagnosis can lead you to find the tools you need to live a good life.

Re: Does a diagnosis really help?

With mental illness of any kind there is a struggle for control of ones mind to have a diagnosis and take medication sea like a surrender which is very difficult to do, but often times is a nescesity. After years of struggle I accept my diagnosis and take my medication and I'm well and happy with that aspect of my life

Re: Does a diagnosis really help?

Do you have to ask for your diagnosis? I just talk every time but forget to ask! I feel I guess what they are, but then I'm not entirely sure! I'm in between too. It's fear of the unknown & potentially not liking it's answer!
