Does a diagnosis really help?

Does a diagnosis really help?

I am interested on hearing what people around here think.

I personally have put off getting a proper diagnosis for years because I didn't think it would help me. I'm very ambivalent about it. Sometimes when things are bad I think about it but then I come out of it and convince myself I don't need the label. I seem to keep ping ponging back and forth.

I already take medicine and as far as I know that is the only treatment, so it's not like I would get better treatment with a diagnosis.

The thing is I have suffered with this for years and it might make me feel a little better about myself to relinquish some of the responsibility - i.e. to not think of myself as at fault or as a bad person but just as having a difficult disease. It might, however make me feel worse to think of myself as having this disease that there is no cure for that I have no control over. At least if I think of myself as 'bad' I can imagine I have some control over that. That one day I will just stop being bad.

Sigh. Just not sure.

Keep nodding off sorry.

Thanks guys for talking to me. I've put some veg & beans in the croc pot. Having a diet shake & coffee while i wait. Just not much hungry.

Did have that church friend drop by late yesterday but have to wear a different hat for her cause her life has so much going on & she needs her ccoffee.
How do you tell someone that your whole world has shifted when they can't even see you're not yourself?

Don't want to complain though, she's the only soul that visits me.

Anyway having trouble focusing with this headache, going back to bed.

Hi everyone who has been having this interesting discussion about diagnosis!

Just wanted to let you know that @CherryBomb and I will be hosting a community conversation tonight at 7pm for Topic Tuesday here about the upsides and downsides of diagnosis - we'd love for some of you to be able to join us!

Hopefully 'see' some of you there!

Re: Does a diagnosis really help?

I was too late to include this in the Tuesday night chat discussion, but thought it might be worth mentioning here ...

My daughter-ion-law suffers with Bipolar, but when it was first mentioned to me as a diagnosis, I struggled to understand what it meant, and more importantly, what she needed from us in terms of support and understanding ....

It seems to me that a lot of diagnoses are in the form of classifications, which may help medical professionals understand how to treat different conditions, however IMO there really needs to be a "user-friendly" version accessible for emotional and social reasons ....

We are not issued with the complex scientific names of plants and animals when they are introduced to us as a part of our education .... why does this occur with medical interpretations ? The same when we buy medication - the complex scientific name is reduced to a "shelf-name".

I think it is an area of concern where the voices of those living the reality need to be recognised and supported with more appropriate vocabulary.
