CSA & Guilt - TRIGGER WARNING

CSA & Guilt - TRIGGER WARNING

I have contemplated writing this thread because I know it is an extremely hard thing for people to talk about and also it is such a big trigger for some people, myself included. It has taken me a week to hit the Post button.I have also looked at a few different threads but could not find one specific on this. I will apologise to anyone now if I trigger them, make them feel uncomfortable or cause them distress. That was certainly not what I wanted. I am hoping from this that I can understand more about my past and the guilt I have held onto for a long time.

So, when I was 8 I was sexually assaulted by a family member for about 2.5 years. Like a lot of people, I never told anyone at the time and have only very recently told my psychologist. I had buried the memories for a long time and it was only through other traumas I experienced in the last 4 years, has this trauma surfaced.

So that is a brief background however I wanted to talk about guilt and CSA. They are probably two words that shouldn't go together but they seem to.

Why is it that there is so much guilt and shame associated with CSA. I can honestly say that I blame myself for what happened. I am ashamed and embarrassed about what happened too. And why is that?

I know all the logical things to say, I was only 8, I didn't know what was happening, he was the adult not me, I was groomed, etc, etc, etc. I have heard all of these statements from my psychologist, yet the feelings of guilt do not go away.

Guilty because I should have know better, guilty i didn't speak up, guilty that because I didn't speak up it could have happened to someone else. The list goes on.

So the question I struggle with is why do we feel so guilty for being a victim of CSA? (Or any sexual assault for that matter)

If you feel like responding that is fine, if you feel like just reading and not responding then that's fine too. Once again I apologise if I have upset anyone in anyway. That was never my intention.

Re: CSA & Guilt - TRIGGER WARNING

Hi @Former-Member

It is a bit of a difficult question to answer for me because a lot of the abuse I suffered as a child has been erased from my memory. I am missing years of my life and the trauma comes out in different ways but I remember enough. And my daughter has been the victim of sexual assault when she was living outside of the home so I have learned much this way of the direct results and damaged accrued from such a personal violation and trauma.

Associated guilt with sexual assault is very common. Although we logically know that we are the innocent party in this scenario - the effects of the trauma has "lowered our self esteem and self worth" to such a dangerous low degree that we question ourselves, our value, our purpose. Some may not even like themselves.....That resulting low self esteem is the foundations of all our self destructive ways and mental health issues that follow. Hence why I personally believe all sex offenders should be jailed for life with the key thrown away.....sorry but to me they are the vilest of creatures. The innocence they destroy and the trail of ruined lives their actions inflict leaves me feeling that way.

That is my opinion as to why many suffer feelings of guilt associated with personal experience of being sexually assaulted. And the most effective way to possibly move forward becoming freer from this guilt is to work on with a mental health professional raising low self esteem and personal feelings of worthlessness; left feeling devalued that is the by product of this heinous act through no fault of our own. Sending you a warm hug

Re: CSA & Guilt - TRIGGER WARNING

Hey @Former-Member - I don't really have any answers for you but I did want to say that I think it's really brave to have posted this. Not because I think it shouldn't be spoken about or written, but because hitting post on a post you've been sitting with for a while takes some big courage (said as someone who can sit with posts for a looooooong time). I can imagine some of the feelings it might have brought up pushing 'post'. For me it can be like holding my breath and hoping for the best.

I hope that others will come past who will be able to offer something that helps you work through this 💗

Re: CSA & Guilt - TRIGGER WARNING

I am sorry @Former-Member that you had to go through when you were younger. I agree that all offenders should never see the light of day. Actually I think maybe jail would be too easy on them. I agree with your opinion on why people feel guilt. I guess by writing this I also wanted a better understanding of how others associate guilt with sexual assault❤️

Re: CSA & Guilt - TRIGGER WARNING

Hi @CheerBear, yes it did take me a long time to push that button!!

I don't think anyone has the answers, I think maybe people look at guilt in many different ways and have different views on why they feel guilty. Also, I guess I was wanting, maybe needing, to hear that I am not the only one who has guilt associated with sexual assault ❤️

Re: CSA & Guilt - TRIGGER WARNING

Something I have realised through the time I have spent here @Former-Member, is that the answer to 'am I the only one' when it comes to so many things is almost always going to be 'no' (although as you said, we each have our own ways of 'experiencing' things).

Speaking from my experience with SA no, you are definitely not the only one who has experienced feelings of guilt associated with it. And you're also not the only one to experience this even though rationally you are able to understand the guilt belongs elsewhere.

You're not alone 💓

Re: CSA & Guilt - TRIGGER WARNING

Hi Guys 🙂

@Former-Member wow, what a courageous post. Nice work 🙂 I hope it is sitting ok with you after sharing this.

I think it is a very brave and positive step toward acceptance and recovery of it consuming you. This is such a personal experience and one that needs to be handled gently. It's ok for it to take the time that it takes, I am very proud of you for being able to explore this with your psychologist and hope that you can continue to do so.

There's a big part of me that wants to validate your experience and say this loud and clear for you to hear. The CSA was not something you invited, yes that adult took advantage of you. It was not your fault. This makes me feel so sad, I'm sorry that you and others have experienced abuse.

Take care all, I'm off for the weekend now but will be back next week 🙂

Thanks @Former-Member it took me a long time to work up the courage but by sharing this I hope it can help other people too. I should be ok and have a safety plan in place now if not ❤❤

Re: CSA & Guilt - TRIGGER WARNING

Thanks for the reply @CheerBear and also for having the strength to discuss such a difficult topic.

Since joining this forum I have quickly learnt that I am not alone and having found people who have had similar experiences to myself.

I think that was one reason I could post this, that I now know that what I am feeling is very similar to what others have and are going through. For a long time I hid what happened to me, and looking back even as an 8 year old, those feelings of guilt and shame were evident even then. Even though I still have those feelings and realise there is no quick fix, I do have comfort in knowing that I am not alone.

I also hope that by others reading it also, they may find comfort in knowing that they are also not alone 💕💕💕

Re: CSA & Guilt - TRIGGER WARNING

Hi @Former-Member...the solace you find with others here is one more coping tool to put in your toolbox. The ' expression' of your experience is another coping tool. Those 2 'tools' or 'skills' can be short term I think or can be long term.

I have said on another post, tho I can't remember which one; I didn't have 'words' to say what was wrong. I was about your age. I didn't know it was wrong till much later in life. I didn't ask for help? because I didn't know what was wrong. I was a child. I thought adults knew what was ok for me at the time. I use to feel 'short' when I got flashbacks, triggers, swept up in a memory.

18 months later after knowing what I just said the 'shame' lifted ..well? by half. I see grey now and not black. I still feel s***t and the flipside is it 'overwhelmed' me to think someone can hurt a child & other adults allowed it to happen. I'm still working on it...

Recovery of such a huge thing as 'shame' is different for everyone but you will do that when you are ready. You have started by sharing ...

We are all in your corner @Former-Member ...

Re: CSA & Guilt - TRIGGER WARNING

Thank you @Neelix for being courageous to tell me some of your story. My thread that I go into more detail in is called 'surround by darkness' so I find it very intersting to say that you know see grey, because at the moment all I can see is black.

I too am struggling with the fact that no other adults stopped him, especially since he had been accused of trying this on another child. Yet every adult in my family remained quiet. This has seen me pull away from my family in the last 4 months.

I hope that one day you and I can see lightness and are able to put this 'shame' behind us, or at least. E able to deal with it. ❤️❤️❤️
