fear of failing

fear of failing

I am worried and anxious every day that I will fail at life

I know I'm only young but I seriously feel like I will become a laughing stock of everyone... then everyone will say "i told you so"

I am sick of being so alone all the time.. I struggle to socialise... even though I know I can do it... Peoeple treat me different because I'm too tall...

I can't handle people anymore with their silly problems... people just abandon me and think I'm being rude or something... but I'm not... I'm just sick of stupid people and I'm also anxious...

I have no idea what to do with my life at all..

Every weekend is horrible. I have nothing to do except be on my own.

Rarely do things get organised and happen... I have nothing else to live for...

I have no proper job because my university timetable is terribly organised (beyond my control) and I have no money left... I feel like a loser who still depends on his parents for support...

I'm sick of medication...

If nothing gets offered to me at the end of the year (highly likely) then I'm going to end it.

I can't handle living like this..

Re: fear of failing

this is a rant from another thread i made
My younger sister relies on me way too much. She should have her damn licence by now but mum is way too protective over her. More protective over her than she ever was for me. At least my dad sympathises with my case a bit... but then he has his own approach to lots of things. Often he forgets that what I deal with prevents me from actively pursuing my goals.. like he gives me great opportunities but i struggle immensely to take them and if i do (like last week) there is always the risk of butchering them.
Mum sometimes doesn't even think about what she says when I try to talk to her about my stuff.. she mouths platitudes that are basically meaningless drivel... about how I am in a period of transition between uni and work... about how I am managing better than I think i am (which could possibly be true idk..)
and my sister constantly nags me about silly mundane stuff then gets majorly offended when i dont listen.. she plays the victim a lot.
Whereas I am the one who bloody well went to hospital because i felt suicidal. I'm the one who feels like killing myself way too often. Whenever I try to talk about it with the 3 of them it's just met with rage and tears and then turns into a pathetic argument.
My resolution is to just get on with whatever I have to.
I'm lucky enough to have 2 or 3 supportive and understanding friends. But I can't burden them too much (Especially considering one of them has SH'd in the past and deals with depression).
I guess starting up group therapy was really good timing for me. But like you, I could only do it at the right time.
I purposely don't tell the group therapy about my SI (rules against it anyway) but they say dont come if you feel really bad. But then again I'm getting individual therapy anyway so group therapy isn't a substitute.
I agree with @Former-Member because of the model they use in hospital... I don't go to the hospital because they just think "oh yeh he is at uni and is working a bit so THEREFORE he is TOTALLY FINE BY COMPARISON" which infuriates me but then I understand that there are people who are worse off than I am.
I've only been in hospital once for 1 night because they didn't want me there. It didn't help being there.. but my SI still hangs about.

Re: fear of failing

It's OK to rant @MDT,you are just another frustrated person who feels they aren't being heard.I guess they see you as someone they can trust and I guess look after your sister. One of my sister's seemed to have a "right to give way" constantly, whether it was rearing her kids,or my mother's constant statement is "she's busy",which I know is my mother's way of compensating. The other sister was put on a pedestal and that might be how you see your sister?Or you have the ability like I did to step back and see there is something wrong? But this causes a lot of conflict sometimes having this insight, both within and towards others.

I just haven't had good experiences in my five years @MDT,no one can help me I realised if I can't have control over my life. Its been a hard lesson to learn.

Look after yourself, you sound like you have a future @MDT ,you sound like you do everything necessary like going to the gym .Keeping life going for someone who didn't and I realise that's the main thing.

Re: fear of failing

Indeed. Thanks @Former-Member .
It's great to hear words of encouragement like this.
My sister and I do get along fine, but at times it's just insanity. I feel like in 10 years time I will be the one having to look out for her because she has made poor life choices. MY dad is aware of the fact her health is declining but he doesn't try to intervene too much because it just becomes a yelling match.
My sister nearly died 6 years back from a benign tumour in her brain. It was removed surgically at the very last minute. But she has all these medical conditions associated with her now as a result of surgery. No hunger mechanism meaning she has put on heaps of weight. To her credit she goes to the gym. She even got my old personal trainer lol, who I got rid of because I hated. The guy was dumb. No commonality at all between him and me.
I hope I have a future @Former-Member I really do.
Today at uni I have researched a couple of things I could potentially start on before graduating. I need to get into action and get one of my lecturers to be a reference - hopefully he will do it. I've built up some rapport with him so that might help. There's such a culture of snobbery at my university and in this field just generally. A lot of my anxiety stems from all of it lately.
I plan on going rogue though if need be - hopefully that will be a good idea.

Re: fear of failing

I didn't know about your sisters illness, sorry @MDT,can see how you might feel at times, like you are less of a priority. It must have been hard at times. There's snobbery everywhere unfortunately @MDT .My anxiety , downfall was made worse by the workplace atmosphere I was in,no one talked, had a Xmas meal where I had to end up not going to because of the atmosphere, couldn't per when I'd go to the toilet, like a child stressed,.I worry if I can ever handle a workplace again. I think people like you and everyone else who have lived and survived through SI etc are much better people because we understand.

Re: fear of failing

@Former-Member this is a good point - living through something like does give you an understanding for the plight of some people's lives.
I am at my best when I am relaxed (like most) but at my worst when I feel like I am way too outside of the group to fit in. I guess I have a rebelious streak at the same time though, because I don't do what everyone else does. Difference is something I actually like and respect. I suppose getting the balance between being isolated and a nonconformist is important. I guess I am a nonconformist in the sense that I don't try to please anyone else. I live according to my own rules. This is probably why I am in the position I am in now. Bittersweet in other words.
I have been in toxic atmospheres that did nothing for my mental health. I have spoken before about a bad experience I had at the start of this year on new year's day at a friend's place. They were all talking about who they had slept with... and i was there not having had any experience in that department whatsoever. Never before had I felt so out of the loop, it induced a mild panic reaction and I simply had to leave. I was so paranoid and worried that the information about my lack of relationship history and hook up culture would stand me as a loser in the group. I just got up and left. IT was what I had to do and I don't regret it. I do hate the fact that one of my friend's still gives me sh*t for it but I don't really care what he thinks anymore. He needs to grow up. Plus he gossips like a high school girl.
I think I can handle workplaces that are not filled with potential psychos as I like to call them. LAtely I have been watching a lot of Jordan Peterson's work on youtube. You might have heard of him.
I think having a basic understanding of psychology can actually stand one in good steed for the workplace - you understand who is control both in terms of the institution and in terms of the social scenario within that very workplace.
I think I have a positive demeanor when I meet people at first, but I am introverted so I need my space. Constantly having people in my face all the time would drive me insane - so i would never survive on a show like big brother lol..
What sort of work environment were you in beforehand? if you dont mind sharing

Re: fear of failing

I was in a factory @MDT,twenty years or so,the b***** are still there ,tried everything to get a job and unsuccessful. At the age of 45 got a Hecs debt from giving up university by distance, did a year or more of psychology/social welfare had family crap then, plus I think I doubted a lot of it then eg:when I went to the local mental health had a try hard male social worker holding up pictures of how mood affects emotions.I had studied it,did nothing for me,wasn't help just someone who looked like he had no idea.

I never met anyone and always waited for Mr Right seen classmates who when one got married, the other followed etc.I was always different, never felt "one of the crowd",and I don't want to be.Always had shit out on me .Just watch it but @MDT,and realize these "mates",may give you crap to hide their own inferiorities or be hellos or envious of you in some way.Sad but true.

I like my own space, worked in a nursing home briefly when I left the factory, one old women picked me as a loner.I do get lonely especially Xmas, but no one is worth it.Tried a relationship with a guy last year who came onto me,but as stated on this site ended up realising he was just another delusional f*****!,had a few of them , including a alcoholic and one delusional twenty years older lol!The guy recently wasn't genuine either.I have trouble believing and trusting in anyone,I get depressed unemployed feel I'm not worthy of ever having a chance at life, meeting someone I now don't want to knowing I'm not worthy.

You have values @MDT when it comes to relationships or you know you haven't met ,"the one".No one can knock you for that.

There are potential psychos in the workplace but the biggest problem is like your mates...egos.

Re: fear of failing

@Former-Member
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your experiences.
I always find it's good to hear from people who have been around longer and have experience in life (no matter what it may be positive or negative).
I remember crappy social workers at hospitals when my sister was there actually... i was content to sit there and read the paper (even if i was 15 at the time).
Some of those social workers are morons. Had one tell me recently when I went to the mental health ward that I needed to just "get a job and cheer up and be happy and dress better". To say I was insulted is an understatement. Felt like she took the piss actually.
You've probably got some tales to tell too. But yes I agree, those "mates" are probably insecure about their own state of affairs or envious maybe i am not too sure.
It's funny you know, because I actually remember primary school now for some reason. How I was friends with the kids who were considered losers or outsiders. But not actually being an outsider myself... or at least I don't think I was. I seemed to always have an empathy for people who are on the outside. I guess I feel like I can relate to them as I don't feel a part of my own culture/stereotypical existence.
Maybe that's what people respect about me idk? I guess it gives me more confidence too, to stick to my own code and no one else's.
Ego is a big thing in my generation I think. I think being aware of that prevents me from having too much of one. It is inevitable people will knock me for whatever.. but that's how it is I suppose.
Thanks for sharing your experiences too btw. It's hard. I hope you know that it has helped 🙂
Thanks again

Re: fear of failing

Thanks @MDT,your posts reminded me of years ago I was having family shit.Went to a female social worker who had hair like a clown (moppy and frizzy), and acted like one! When I was in a happy moment she would pull a happy face, when I was upset she'd pull a sad face, quivering the bottom lip.Bloody hopeless. She draw pictures on the whiteboard as learnt in sociology so you could visually clarify everything etc.I probably would've made a good social worker as the ones I've seen seem to be lost like me.
