Book worms here!!

Book worms here!!

Morning all. I'm reading Nightmare by Lars Kepler, it is a murder thriller. It's the second book of Lars I've read the 1st was The hypnotist. I dont usually like murder type books but I do enjoy the crime solving part and the characters that evolve. I like fiction and non-fiction. I'm a mood reader. Critical reasoning by Ann Thomsen is a book that I read and put down and think about then read a bit more. Joddi Piccoult and Dan Brown are 2 books I have on the go. I just wanted to post here and hear what other books people are reading. I'm always on the look out for new authors and other genre's to read. Post here if you are reading a book or read a book and a little about it. Soz if this is a thread that has already been done. If so? Direct me to the thread 🙂

Re: Book worms here!!

Hi @Former-Member cheers for the comment. I've not read a memoir before, which is different to a autobiography? Can you tell me your favourite parts? I read 'Nineteen minutes' by Jodi Piccoult about the 19yr boy who supposedly murdered his friend. It was intriguing and I wanted to yell out he didnt do it lol I've read a couple of others 'My sisters Keeper' 'Songs of the Humpback Whale'. I find her writing intense and put the book down and pick it back up. I do enjoy her books. I've got 3 more to read. What books of hers didn't you like? What is the 'Quarterly Essay' ? ...you book worm hehe

Re: Book worms here!!

Hi @Neelix,

In general terms, an autobiography covers the author’s whole life, whereas as memoir just focuses on one section or aspect of their life. Both are autobiographical writing.

Books were (and still are) very important to Winterson and she’s woven them throughout her story. I can relate to that a lot, particularly using books to escape a difficult childhood.

I haven’t read Nineteen Minutes yet but it is on my (extremely long) to-read list. I’ve read ten of Picoult’s books so far. Picture Perfect was my least favourite—I couldn’t get into the story at all. I really loved Sing You Home though; it's one of my all-time favourite books.

Quarterly Essay is an Australian journal. The website describes it as: ‘an agenda-setting Australian journal of politics and culture. Each issue contains a single essay written at a length of about 25,000 words, followed by correspondence on previous essays.’ This will be the first one I’ve read. I’ve started reading a lot more nonfiction over the last year or so.

Yep, I’m definitely a book worm.

Re: Book worms here!!

@Former-Member Anne of Green Gables is a favourite novel I read when I want to get lost. When I was young I immersed in comic's to yeah I hear you...to escape. I liked poetry then too something I've not read in many years now. I've always enjoyed 'words'. Aaah I understand 'Quarterly Essay' I've not read any. I use to subscribe to the 'Community Quarterly' journal which is similar and is an Australian journal. When I was working as a community development worker. It was political and raised community issues eg. housing, education, disabilities, etc. I dont know if I have a favourite author but I do have a curious mind.

Re: Book worms here!!

Well my new book: (Unbreakable: women share stories of resilience and hope - edited by Jane Caro) is a health hazzard. @Neelix @Bubbles3 avoid this one. My daughter and I thought it would be uplifting but it's full of horrible stories of violence and abuse. Lots of triggers and I don't even want to give it away because it could cause someone else grief : (

Re: Book worms here!!

I haven’t read Anne of Green Gables, @Neelix. It’s one of those classics I haven’t got to yet. One day I’ll get there—especially if it's good for escape.

Sorry to hear your new book was so triggering, @frog. I hope you’ve got something else more pleasant to dip into instead.

I’ve finished reading Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? and Quarterly Essay 67—both excellent. I’m about to start Blue Skies by Helen Hodgman. It’s a novel set in Hobart (I think), which is where I hope to move in the not too distant future.

Hi @frog I do like books of resilience and hope. You have got me curious about the new book you read. I read a book 'You can't break the spirit' by Pam McCallister of women stories and their survival in Africa. It is similar to0 and has stories of violence. It gave me hope as these women survived. I hope your well today

Re: Book worms here!!

Morning @Former-Member your humming along with reading 🙂 How did you find those 2 reads? I've read 'Blue Skies' I enjoyed it and one of those books that took me to the time and moment. I was reading 'The Fortress' last night by Dan Brown. As usual I fell asleep reading. I've read 'The hypnotist' by Lars Kepler and I am trying to buy the movie on Youtube. I'm interested to see which actors they choose for a couple of 'characters' in the book. I'm going to a Book club meetup today. Its my 1st meetup am nervous lol as I don't do well in groups but I'm working on it. Hobert? sounds cool.

Re: Book worms here!!

Hi @Neelix. I’ve never bought a movie on Youtube (I didn’t even know you could—I’m not overly tech-savvy). I usually rent movies through iTunes. I just had a look and saw The Hypnotist there. I hope the movie is as good as the book. I have a ‘book first, then movie’ rule, because movies so rarely live up to the books they are based on. It’s always interesting to see who they cast though.

Going to a book club—that’s huge. Are they people you know? It’s something I would love to do but I am not good with people in general, groups especially. Was The Hypnotist for book club, or are you reading another book? I hope you enjoy yourself today.

Re: Book worms here!!

The Hypnotist book was a random choice at the library. It was a 2 day read for me hehe I wanted to see what would happen. Yep is huge for me to go to the meetup for the bookclub. I've joined so many groups on Meetup Australia and never gone. The bookclub group has limited it to 10 people for the meetup. If I can be near the door I will stay. I hear ya with 'not good with people in general' ...I hope you enjoy your day too @Former-Member
