How to accept help after a life of helping others

How to accept help after a life of helping others

I'm in my mid 50's and have had careers in the helping professions most of my adult life. Listening to friends and family, and even strangers on the street has been an habitual trait I can't seem to shake.

I feel a little broken at the moment trying to avoid situations where I'm used as a sounding board for 'their' problems. My own issues are on top of me and when I try to voice my concerns, a common answer is; "You think that's bad, what about me?" I then listen and engage as usual and leave the conversation feeling ignored and alone.

I wouldn't say I'm homebound, but close enough to it to feel scary and stuck. I call Lifeline sometimes for another voice in the room (I live alone) and it's mostly productive, but it doesn't replace close connections I crave; especially to discuss happy or up-lifting topics.

I was hospitalised this year and found it exasserbating being the one who needed support. I ended up listening to other patients and ignoring my own needs.

Even now I'm tempted to read posts and reach out to help.

How do I resist this temptation and focus on my own life?

Hope

Thank you @Maggie, I know that you understand from direct lived experience and you don't just intellectually imagine.

I can't turn my back on her.

And I also cannot do the pantomime.

If anyone else wishes to perform a play or a puppet show titled Happy Families, wearing masks and all, go right ahead.

I will not be playing my part anymore, those days are over.

It will be tough for me re-integrating @Maggie , I know you understand that. My psychiatrist wants me to have a planned admission for December as a safety net.....

.....its been a really hard year. Lots of heartbreak, and buckets of pain.

Just one day at a time hey.

Big hugs my friend, be gentle on yourself,

Cuddly Corn

No pressure to ever reply @outlander , there's lots of goobies going around at the moment. Take care of yourself.

I am horizontal too.

I don't think of it as being in bed, I think of it as being trapped in a giant, oversized sandwich, and I am the meat. Like from Space Balls or something.

We will sleep well tonight @outlander I can feel it in me waters.

Corny xx

Well hello my lovely @Corny

(and shout-outs to @outlander @Faith-and-Hope

@Maggie @Appleblossom @Shaz51 and @Former-Member)

Goodness me there's been lots to read! Whew! Your notification boards will be lighting up like Christmas trees. Blinka blinka blinka I think I have RSI in my forefinger from hitting the button 😆

As it's taken me so long, I might take a break and be back later on to respond. I recently had cateract surgery and had an infection, so my eyes are still adjusting to being on the laptop for extended periods.

Looking forward to talking...

Hope xoxo

I stole your Barbies while you were convalescing @Hope4me , if there was anyone on this forum who would barge in and do that opportunistically, it would have to be me wouldn't it, eh

Glad to read that you have taken time out to rest and recover.

Sometimes we need to take a break from all things mental illness too. It's healthy to do that, and go off line.

I hope that some of the rain last week reached you, and next week we are due for some more, with a bit of luck it won't just be the coast that gets it. Maybe this will give people in my suburb some pause to stop hosing their tiles and trying to sprout their concrete. What they planted there, is a mystery....

Later Hopey!

I am still in the honeymoon suite, with the beaut weather this weekend I should be down by the water with the mermaids eh, eh

It takes what it takes and I will get there eventually

Hi @Corny I thought you were leaving the honeymoon suite on Thursday. Sorry if I have it wrong, or if something has stopped your hospital discharge.

Concrete sprouting. Lol. 😁😁

I wish we could send some of our rain up country where it’s needed.

Thinking of you. 💜💕💜☕️☕️☕️

Re: How to accept help after a life of helping others

The holiday in the Honeymoon Suite continues @Maggie , my doctor postponed my evacuation and transition back to civilian life and I suppose I have to listen to him and comply with his recommendations. Doctors talk to other doctors and do these peer review things so who knows what they discuss, but Cuddly Corny, is still Confined Corny.

He knows that I've got some of the rascal in me and am at risk of tunnelling a Shawshank Redemption-like passage way, so they've done their due diligence n that and have blocked all the drains & sewers in the suburb. My family has a long history @Maggie of institutionalisation and we've passed down our skills and knowledge to one another in the hope that the next generation does us proud if they should ever need to.

Would you believe I woke to the most glorious full moon setting on the horizon outside my bedroom window this morning! It was like a peachy, pink with the sun coming up simultaneously and I believe it was placed there just for me. There are some cosmic events to be seen from this room I tell ya. I could write me memoirs but I don't have the cognition right now.

I hope that you can get some sunshine this weekend,

@Corny I demonstrated many skills during my many long confinement’s. I did improve overlooked adventures. 😁😁

Unfortunately my family went untreated, seemed to be the thing back then. We lived with the secrets which were passed down. My family think I’m more of a joke than anything because of my confinement’s, but I see things differently now.

I had a magnificent moon shining through my window most of the night. I’ve witnessed some amazing a beautiful cloud and moon formations through my sleepless nights. Sometimes I want to run outside and say, wake up, your missing so much.

I hope the sun shines for you too this week. I must get moving and do some washing and things. 💕💜💕☕️☕️☕️
