How to accept help after a life of helping others

How to accept help after a life of helping others

I'm in my mid 50's and have had careers in the helping professions most of my adult life. Listening to friends and family, and even strangers on the street has been an habitual trait I can't seem to shake.

I feel a little broken at the moment trying to avoid situations where I'm used as a sounding board for 'their' problems. My own issues are on top of me and when I try to voice my concerns, a common answer is; "You think that's bad, what about me?" I then listen and engage as usual and leave the conversation feeling ignored and alone.

I wouldn't say I'm homebound, but close enough to it to feel scary and stuck. I call Lifeline sometimes for another voice in the room (I live alone) and it's mostly productive, but it doesn't replace close connections I crave; especially to discuss happy or up-lifting topics.

I was hospitalised this year and found it exasserbating being the one who needed support. I ended up listening to other patients and ignoring my own needs.

Even now I'm tempted to read posts and reach out to help.

How do I resist this temptation and focus on my own life?

Hope

G'day @outlander I understand that group therapy can take from you, more than it gives to you. Each one is different, and if in the future you begin another one you can always leave.

But it sounds like you have figured out, what does and does not work for you, and that is great. We only have limited inner resources and it is better to channel it towards something that is helpful.

It can be that way for a lot of people, and even patients with the same diagnosis or presentation can really rub you up the wrong way, or just not be your kind of person or even a very un-nice person who should be avoided like the plague. You wouldn't like every person you met who has cancer simply because they have cancer, there's still basic standards and sometimes they're just not your sort of person.

I hope that you were able to enjoy some sun today.

hey @Corny
yeah I guess its about finding what works and what doesn't.
exactly. just cause people have something in common doesn't mean they'll get along.

Hi @outlander

Isn;t it right @Corny that people can share things but not be really compatible. Getting along is partly up to intention and effort ... or luck ... good for me to remind myself about tension and it operates in groups. Group institutions is a theme for me so I did watchg Orange is the New Black. Found the first season worth it, but the 2nd just annoyed me. Glad I dont have to for.ce myself to finish things any more.

I have been to Wendy's garden about 10 years ago ... there was the train line at the bottom or something ... and view of the harbour ....

Hi @outlander I went home yesterday and I am discharging next week so naturally I am nervous about integrating back into normal life. I will enjoy some privacy in my own apartment, my own bed and some home cooking! I will look up some new recipes I want to try.

I have been bombarded with puppy fantasies all morning. I keep fantasising that when I pop the door to my apartment they will run down the stairs and greet me. Alas, no.

If I am not around I am doing my best to recover and stay well post hospital it has been a long time and very draining on me. I will limit my Internet use that is triggering for me and try and focus on my nutrition, therapy and exercise. I hope that you will travelling OK @outlander, I know how hard the ups and downs are.

Hello to @Hope4me @Maggie @Former-Member I hope that you are enjoying some sun somewhere.

@Appleblossom It is funny the assumptions people make based on one aspect of yourself, we most definitely will not like every person with a MI that we meet. I get the assumption that I will immediately have lots in common with, and would automatically get along with anyone LGBTI because I am of the rainbow too.

I have to discharge next week because if another person asks me if I have a husband I will go bananas.

Later forumites, cuddle comas all around, spring is here!

Hey @Corny

Hearing you about assumptions re the rainbow ...

in general ... in life ...

I was in a ward tonight and chatted to some patients. Some of them dont mean to be rude ... are just overwhelmed so their social sensitivities are not at their highest ... maybe make a joke about going bananas ... if some one puts their foot in it again ... that way you can be honest, express frustration, but not hurt person's feelings .... if they are being decent ...

Take Care All

Dear @Corny

I read your post on my PTSD thread, but then it disappeared. I will keep a look out for it in case it comes back on line, and will comment appropriately when, or if, it does. I wont mention any more about it here though. And then its up to you whether you read any comment I subsequently make on my thread, or not. Thats why there is a permanent "possible trigger" notification embedded within the title.

Thank you for taking the time to post there. I know you are restricting your time on-line and limiting yourself to only a few threads in order to not trigger yourself. We certainly dont want all that hard work done you've been doing at the hospital, to go down the gurgler, now do we? And thats the reason I have not been tagging you to my thread .. Its not that I've tried to exclude you, but merely to protect you from possible harm. I'm sorry you happened to stumble across it, while following @Faith-and-Hope 's lead.

You need to concentrate now on preparing for your hospital discharge next week. It has I'm very sure, been very draining as its been a long and no doubt arduous stay this time. You've done remarkably well, I have to say. You are always a shining light and inspiration to me, and I'm quite sure to many others reading your posts. But for now, please concentrate on your own wellbeing .. beit nutrition, ongoing therapy and exercise. Yes ... spring has certainly sprung here, in a big way. 25C here today, and expecting 32C by Friday. Too hot! Plants are all trying to bud and leaves appearing on all the deciduous trees. Now, all we really need .... is some rain, some moisture in the earth to sustain the growth.

Take care my friend.

Sherry 💕
