How to accept help after a life of helping others

How to accept help after a life of helping others

I'm in my mid 50's and have had careers in the helping professions most of my adult life. Listening to friends and family, and even strangers on the street has been an habitual trait I can't seem to shake.

I feel a little broken at the moment trying to avoid situations where I'm used as a sounding board for 'their' problems. My own issues are on top of me and when I try to voice my concerns, a common answer is; "You think that's bad, what about me?" I then listen and engage as usual and leave the conversation feeling ignored and alone.

I wouldn't say I'm homebound, but close enough to it to feel scary and stuck. I call Lifeline sometimes for another voice in the room (I live alone) and it's mostly productive, but it doesn't replace close connections I crave; especially to discuss happy or up-lifting topics.

I was hospitalised this year and found it exasserbating being the one who needed support. I ended up listening to other patients and ignoring my own needs.

Even now I'm tempted to read posts and reach out to help.

How do I resist this temptation and focus on my own life?

Hope

Your compassion and care is so wonderful @Hope4me 😊 While it is so wonderful to be able to respond to everyone sometimes we can miss some things and there isn't a need to feel ashamed - I am sure @Corny would agree! We also hope you are doing okay @Corny

It is great you have such an amazing doctor that you can connect with @Corny - and thanks for respecting the rules. We really appreciate that there can be a desire to break them when making connections in a forum but the boundaries set up are for a reason and we really appreciate the respect from all members, including yourself that maintain this 👍🏼

Up and down @outlander

I'm endeavouring to start a new job I got, been a while and the service hasn't responded to my email. Frustrating. Money or the lack of it, is a mighty motivator. And you?

It's great you're coping @outlander . Even though tough times challenge us, it's how we get through it that proves our worth.

I'm just going to read through the thread you tagged me on. Might take a while. Talk tomorrow eh?

It's funny you should ask @Shaz51

My emotions are ok, but am in the midst of an ah-ha moment that's a bit unpleasant. There's a tug of war going on inside that's got me reeling; that place between the adult and child within.

I've probably been here quite a few times of late but haven't had the insight of today. On waking, I was confronted by a task where being a responsible adult will see me through. It bought up feelings (not thoughts) of 'unhealthy' avoidance.

I'm grateful for your attention and support Shaz, @outlander @Corny @CheerBear @Former-Member In view of this issue being cptsd related, I might discuss it on an appropriate thread where it can be viewed more readily. I think it's important for people to see first hand how I process things in the context of recovery.

Thanks lovely Shaz;

Hope xo
