How to talk to a GP or other mental health professional about self-harm

How to talk to a GP or other mental health professional about self-harm

I'm not coping with work or life or anything. had to see my gp for a sick certificate and he called my psychiatrist to see me. she's upped some of my meds which is sh#tting me off.

I'm gonna see my gp again tomorrow, I need another certificate and apparently some blood tests.

Can I ask a question??

I swear I am not at immediate risk. I know the phone numbers to call and so forth.

How do I tell my psych/gp/pdoc anyone that I think about suicide??? It scares shit out me that I have a plan.

To re-iterate... I am not in immediate danger.

Sorry if I'm causing a problem...

I'm sitting at the clinic now waiting waiting...
Hopefully I see my GP before I lose my nerve...
I'm telling myself I have to at least see him so's I can get a sick certificate.
One of my friends called earlier and said if I didn't go he'd drive down here to take me to the doc. He lives about 4 hours away. And I know he'd do it, so I'm here, otherwise I'd feel even worse.

All done. Didn't really discuss my thoughts... I half said, but yeah...

We talked, I cried, he talked, I still cried.

I'm still miserable, but he said that I need to work on opening up to my pdoc. And he said he'll call and speak to my pdoc.

It's all so goddamn hard though. I didn't have a normal upbringing, I don't know how to be open with people.

He gave me a copy of my latest psych report, there's a part in there that cracked me up. It sums me up completely, which is kinda sad...

Heya

Well done on going to the appointment and for letting him know that you are struggling and need help. He's probably right in saying it would be good to open up more to you pdoc. (SO much harder to do than say though!) If i had any reports they'd probably be very similar... and in court they read things out that was similar about not openly at times and becoming 'monosyllabic' when very stressed. doh! I too didnt have a great up bringing and its hard to overcome that stuff but not impossible and because of our past struggles we're already stronger than most so we can do it 🙂 But i get terrified any time i have to be truly honest about myself so I kinda get it..

You've started the conversations now, and your gp will do some of the work for your next pdoc appointment by letting them know that you're struggling. Maybe write down a list of stuff that you want to say to your pdoc next time and you could always just give them the list if you feel you cant say it, i find it easier to answer questions than tos tart things myself... but you might have other strategies that work best for you!

No matter what, we're all going to be here listening and caring! Take care of yourself, do some nice things just for you tonight and tomorrow... favourite movie, bubble bath, chocolate hehe, whatever 🙂
