Survey on sex, intimacy and mental illness

Survey on sex, intimacy and mental illness

Hello Forumites

Last year a brave forum member started this conversation. It was quite an eye opener and had a ripple effect. It lead to this blog and this Topic Tuesday which in turn lead to an invite to a mental health conference. It's a chance to be part of a panel of mental health professionals making the point that our sector doesn't give this issue the time or attention it needs. It's to our clients detriment and it's something we need to change.

My role on the panel is to give voice to the experiences of those with a mental illness, their carers and partners. So I've created a survey to dig a little deeper into the topic. If you have a few minutes, I'd really appreciate you filling it in. It will only take 10 minutes and it's completely anonymous. The link will take you to another website (survey monkey) where no identifying information is recorded.

Here is the survey.

At SANE we'd also like to create some fact sheets and resources around this topic. And so your responses can also guide and give depth to this work.

Thank you. I appreciate you reading this far and for anyone able to do the survey 🙂

This sounds like a really important topic to explore @Former-Member.

Thanks @Phoenix_Rising - we think so 🙂

There have been over 300 completed surveys so far so thank you all so much. But let's keep going as the more participants the more weight the results have.

So if you haven't completed it so far, please take a few minutes to share your thoughts.

@Former-Member Wow, that's a really good response to get so quickly. You made me giggle when you said the larger the sample, the more weight the results will have. I think what you meant to say was that the larger the sample size is, the more statistical power you will have, thereby reducing the risk of a type II error when you analyse the data.

Hello @Former-Member @Phoenix_Rising @Zoe7 @eudemonism @Former-Member

Have just rejoined the forums as I wanted to participate in the survey.

With the challenges that many of us with mental illnesses face, I think that sex and intimacy are often way down on the list of priorities-whether intentionally or not-as other issues are more pressing, just to get by each day.

I hope I'm not triggering anyone, but for me, just the mention of sex and intimacy is unsettling. It's difficult to talk about any of this stuff with my psychologist, the counsellors I speak to on the 24/7 phone line I access, or my support people at work. I'm working on so much self-preservation and trauma-related work at the moment that the sex/intimacy issues may be discussed some other time...maybe in another couple of years, or not.

But it's good this topic is out there because I don't think therapists or people in the helping professions realise how large and how much the sex/intimacy (or lack thereof) topic can be in someone's head.
