Hi @whitedog, this is one of the active discussion threads designed for general chats.

I am so with you on the peace of the night. Sometimes I feel like I can hear too much noise in my head from other people being awake during the day, like I can hear a background hum of thoughts (don't literally believe this but my mind definitely feels more 'crowded' during the day). At night, my mind seems to be more my own and I can hear myself think better.

@Mazarita yeah I find that too. I seem to pick up on too much activity during the day. I even find that I'll be focusing on everyone around me too much so it's hard to focus on my own projects. It's just a really nice time at night to get into the moment I think. 🙂

I also read an article once that posited the idea that some people are kind of born night owls, @whitedog. It put forward the idea that, in tribal times, we would have kind of been the watchers for any night time threats while the rest of the tribe were sleeping. I can't remember the source though, or how reliable. I think it's an interesting idea though.

What are you studying formally? Are your personal study interests in the same area?

Re: Anyone feel like chatting?

Hmm that sounds like a very interesting article @Mazarita. Feel free to share it with me if you ever find it. I like this idea because I've often felt bad about being a night owl and was often worried that there was something wrong with me because of it. But your theory makes sense.

I'm formally studying computer science but my interests are in psychology.

Both interesting subjects you are into, @whitedog. By the way, how did you come up with your username? Do you have a white dog? Interesting that your avatar is a computer generated model. Just an odd curiosity that arose in me there.

I know what you mean about being bad about being a night owl. Perhaps that's why the article has stayed in my mind too. I read it a couple of years ago. Will have a bit of a search again for it after I've posted this. Yes, it's hard to explain odd sleeping patterns to most people.

Re: Anyone feel like chatting?

Ahh yes, my name whitedog is like a reference to blackdog and depression. I forget why I wanted a computer generated whitedog @Mazarita but it had something to do with wanting a paper like origami like dog. I came up with the idea ages ago when I joined.

I reckon it may be spot on. There may even be a evolutionary psych explanation as to why some people are night owls. I can imagine that some groups of animals would need a look out animal to warn of danger.

I remember when I had flat mates they actually said they felt comforted by the fact that I was up because it was like having their own watchman through the night lol.

I'll try to find something too. But first I'm going to go for a stroll over to the cafe. 🙂

@whitedog, couldn't find the original article but here's an essay that has some interesting content:

Interesting your housemates felt comforted by your being awake at night.

And, just for fun, here's a night owl dream catcher that caught my eye, lol.

p.s. will take a while for it to be visible probably. Moderation on images here is slower than posts.

Edit: I realise that I am getting sleepy now that's first light, @whitedog, so may not be around when you come back from the cafe. Really enjoyed our chat tonight. Thanks for being here.
