Something’s not right

BPD

BPD

hello fellow sane members

ive jsut been diagnosed with BPD. its shocked me becasue i wouldnt have thought i have a personality disorder

ive been told that DBT is the best form of therapy but dont really know much else, and i dont really know what to do from here.

ive been put on a waiting lidt to DBT group therapy but thats a long list minimum 4 months until then so not really sure how to proceed from here

can anyone share any experiences about where to from here, DBT experiences or anything at all

Re: BPD

@outlander I have BPD and just finished my first round of DBT but my psychologist wants me to do another one but it has helped me to deal with the emotions that come up in better ways. i wouldnt say it is a cure just a better way of coping than the ways people with BPD often use to cope. it does help a lot though particularly with relationships another thing that people with BPD can struggle with.

if you have any other specific questions feel free to ask.

@Eden1919
I cant even get in to do dbt yet still a long way off from that.
I cant find any other private dbt therapists either that i can afford or will run through medicare.
I need help now to control it not 6 months down the track when a im doing now is using coping strategies that hardly work and i dont know how else to fix it

Re: BPD

That would be hard for you @outlander not having your mums support.

Re: BPD

Never have @Determined pity that. Makes the homefront very difficult. Im either in shite for not telling her somethinh or being in shite for being honest and/or asking for help.
I think half the time its better to suffer in silence keeps the tension out of the house

Re: BPD

@outlander There may be some online DBT resources http://www.dbtselfhelp.com/ has some good things on it that could be like a good intro. but it is hard when you have to wait for services. when i first got diagnosed and went and read everything i could find on BPD and that helped me to understand why i would react certains ways and why i was having certain feelings all the time which kind of helped me cope in the way that if i am feeling bad or having really strong emotions i can say to myself well maybe this is just the BPD and i dont need to act on it now. this is super hard to do especially at the start but i would encourage you to find out more about BPD as it could help give some context to your life. also while you wait for DBT are you seeing anyone like a psychologist?

Re: BPD

I did do some research @Eden1919 it was very helpful. It gave me the same realisations as youve meantioned here and gave me some understanding.
I am seeing a psychologist but they do cbt not dbt

Re: BPD

@outlander well i am glad you found the research helpful. the psychologist part is difficult as there are not many that do dbt in comparison to cbt anyway. you could ask them if they have ever done ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) it is not exactly proven for bpd but i did a little of it and found it seemed to have a lot of similar ideas to dbt and it could be something to do in the meantime or something to explore or you could ask them if they have done it if they thought you would benifit from it.

Re: BPD

@outlander yeah sometimes when you find a diagnosis that really fits it can be super validating and it can make you feel less alone and not so crazy. it is also good cause you can finally look to find ways to deal with it. i am glad you have found something that you thinks fits with you.
