Supporting an already Depressed Partner through Cancer diagnosis

Supporting an already Depressed Partner through Cancer diagnosis

This week has been a really tough one.

On Monday I learned that my Mum has advanced breast cancer already spread to the lungs and likely the bones. The prognosis is very poor.

Then on Wednesday it was confirmed that my husband has lung cancer (multiple nodules) which has metastisised from either the kidney cancer he had 6 years ago or the melanoma he had removed 18 months ago. Either way the outlook is bleak. We are now going through the process of blood tests, needle aspirations for a sample to determine the origin of the tumors, bone scans, physician apts to determine whether his overall health is good enough to undergo possible treatment or surgery, etc. Once thats all done we will see the Oncologist armed with all the necessary information in order to determine where we go from here.

I am carer for my husband, who has PTSD, anxiety, depression, alcoholism and a number of other physical health issues. The diagnosis this week has hit him hard, he has had no symptoms, so it was a surprise. Only picked up due to the routine annual scans that he has had since his kidney cancer 6 years ago. Apparently it is not unusual to experience no symptoms with metastisised cancer of the lung.

He is now deeply depressed, extremely vague and forgetful, and is obviously feeling really vulnerable.

I have personally had a really difficult year and a half with loss of an 11yo niece through a car accident, my brother being suicidal, my own PTSD being triggered by a series of incidents. And now, the two most important people in my world (Mum and Husband) are both going through the ordeal of likely untreatable cancer, both within a two day period. I feel like my whole world has come crashing down, and I am struggling with everything.

My mother and other immediate family lives 6.5 hours from here, so it is not easy to be there for her. And I cant leave my husband anyway as he has to be my priority. So many appointments over the coming week or two. So I am feeling very frustrated and useless all round. Its so hard when there is simply nothing I can do for either one of them.

The best I can do is to try to remain positive for both of them. So far hubby is fairly positive, but I dont think he is fully aware of the ramifications of his diagnosis. But I am feeling far from positive myself. So how do I remain upbeat and positive for him, when I am personally crumbling under the pressure? I know how important positive thinking is when it comes to physical health issues, and I guess mental as well. But right now .... I am struggling to find a way through my own misery. Intense anxiety symptoms have once again descended.

Any advice would be appreciated.

It is wonderful news that your partner is in remission. You have both been through so much in last few months.I am glad you could let us know that you are both coming though. Medicine is so complicated these days, with reactions to immunotherapy ... we have to trust and take the next step.

Thank you to all of you for your messages over the past week, and my apologies for not responding until now. As it is this will be brief, just to let you know all is okay. More detail to follow in due course when I find a little free time.

Hubby came home from hospital on the weekend and is continuing to progress both physically and mentally. Its a slow process however and he remains a seriously ill man. Fact is he continues to have a terminal illness, but at least the side effects from the treatment of that illness are now under control.

He is still on very high doses of Steriods for the brain inflamation, but will start to taper off them soon. In the interim he is becoming very angry again. I guess thats a sure sign that his health is returning. So perhaps I should not be complaining about that?

He is also on 2 injections of anti coagulant needles per day to control the pulmonary embolism. That is likely to continue for at least 3 months. People with cancer, especially melanoma, are more prone to blood clots, and oral forms of blood thinners are not usually effect for them. So the 2xday needles continue. He is black and purple all around his belly, but not much can be done about that. At least both he and I are fine with giving and receiving needles.

I am feeling very run down now that I'm home again, and I guess come down from the necessary high adrenaline needed to function over the past 5 weeks. So I am currently very low and teary. I also came down with a heavy cold a few days ago, so am pretty miserable from that. I am getting a few hours sleep again, which is nice, and will hopefully see me through.

Thank you all of you for your enquiries and your care. Kindest. Maggie, are you still around? I will tag you too if you like, so you know where I'm at, why I havent been around much. Was so happy to see you return a few days ago. @Maggie

@Former-Member Yes I'm around. I've been looking for you, but the forum is a big place when trying to locate someone. I'm short on words, you know the brain freeze that I get caught in. I have only read your last post, it has given me enough info to see the struggles you and hubby continue to battle through. I'm sitting with you and I often get told I'm a good listener. So if you need to off load, please do. I took this pic of a camellia in my garden yesterday. Kind thoughts dear lady.

Thanks so much @Maggie @Former-Member @Faith-and-Hope and others too who posted earlier enquiring after me.

@Maggie. Good to know you're still around. Yes the forum is a big place I agree, and sometimes its very difficult to track someone down. There doesnt seem to be anywhere that you can look at all the threads you've been contributing to, which makes it difficult when you want to go back to old threads again.

Oh yes, I know the brain freeze you speak of, so please do not feel pressure to respond, if you dont feel up to it. Its nice knowing you're sitting there with me anyway, and sharing the beautiful clear night skies we have been having here lately. I do love this time of year, with cool nights at last, clear bright skies and heavy dewy mornings. Love it. In fact this morning I am still in my dressing gown, warm and comfy, and with little Holly enjoying the warm rays of sunlight sneaking through.

Wow I love that camelia from your garden, very beautiful flowers arent they. We have some here as well, and in fact I think one of ours is the same colour as yours. So soft and fragile looking arent they?

I actually saw a song 'elsewhere' that you wrote recently Maggie. About rivers, it was beautiful, so very you. Unfortunately I went back to read it again afterwards, but its no longer there. Was sad about that, although its possible it was just moved to another area. But it was a lovely song, and of course you know my thoughts about rivers, creeks and gurgling brooks. Restful and yet invigorating.

Are you still seeing your wonderful counsellor Maggie? And how is your little Maggie-Mae?

Okay, I must go now, time to administer more needles to hubby. Difficult finding a non-bruised spot, but I will find somewhere in there.

Talk later.

Sherry

@Former-Member I just posted the song here on the writing thread this morning. Thanks so much for the feed back. Those clear skies, dewy mornings are here also. A perfect autumn in tassie after the hottest longest summer ever, and you know I hate the heat. Maggie May is very well Thankyou, she's been on a diet. Vet said she needed to lose 500grams, a lot for a little girl. Almost there but it's been hard for ME, yes I feel mean, but she's looking great and racing around everywhere.

So you are off to administer some care and medication. I hope you are finding time for you sometimes. Any painting lately? I'm loving seeing blooms still coming through in my garden. As you know, it's the first year in this flat and everything is new. Peach trees are now 1 meter high, and the lemon. The passionfruit is growing madly and almost going under cover to be protected from frosts, and I'm putting peastraw around everything for winter, and I'm rambling sorry, I've missed you, can you tell. Take care.🌺☀️
