The great yoga adventure

The great yoga adventure

Hi all,

So...somehow I seem to have made myself a deal with @CheerBear that we are both going to venture into the super scary world of yoga next Monday. I'm SCARED!!!! I've been trying to psych myself up to go to a class for about a year and now thanks to a pesky little care bear, it seems like it is going to happen next Monday.

I have my mat and my outfit (and thanks to @Former-Member and @Former-Member I know to wear underpants under yoga pants ). Now I just need to find some courage. Hmmm...courage...I'm sure I have some here SOMEWHERE in my shell...

Only six sleeps away. This sounds way too close. Yep, this little turtle is going to need to do some serious psyching up before next Monday!!! All encouragement is warmly welcome.

Hi @LooneyToones - welcome to the Yoga thread. My session this afternoon was called The Essentials. We did a whole heap of downward dog with raised legs as well. On top of that we also planked a lot including sideways planks. I'm going to feel it in my abs tomorrow.

We also treed; somewhat wobbly as we had to twist too. I find if I focus on a spot, I'm less likely to fall over.

There weren't too many people in the class so we had plenty of room to spread out.

Oh - my dog is laying beside me on the sofa and she's just broken wind - it smells terrible!!

Good evening everybody, I have yoga-ed today, have you?

I can see that @Former-Member and @Shaz51 have - yay!

Hey look @Ant7, @Former-Member has solved the dilemma. The pose for this week is Adho mukha svanasana.

@Former-Member I think we have established that one shouldn't yoga while in the shower, riding a bike, riding a skateboard or using a mobile phone. I'm thinking we can add typing to the list.

@soul Did you go to a class today? I definitely agree that small classes are nicer than big classes. Mine never gets too big, which is good. By the way, on Monday night our teacher reminded the class at the start that there was a rule about being silent in the room. I appreciated this because the week before, a couple of people had been chatting in the room before the class started. It reminded me though of what you were saying the other day about people not being particularly talkative at yoga classes. I super like the no talking rule at my class, but I can see that in terms of building social contacts, I think a yoga class at a gym or community group would be the way to go.

Hi @LooneyToones, it is nice to see you here. I can only afford a class once a week too. However, there are some cool online resources. I have only been going to a real class for a few weeks, but I have played around at home using this website for ages: https://www.doyogawithme.com/ Here in Forum Land we have been playing around with a do-a-pose-every-day-for-a-week challenge for the past few weeks. So far we've done tree pose, warrior II pose, and this week is downward facing dog. You are extremely welcome to join us.

Happy yoga-ing everybody...

With this introductory offer that I am currently enjoying, it works out less than $3 a class - wonderful value. After that, I can take out a membership that would cost me $4 a class if I went every day. That's like the price of a cup of coffee and since I don't drink that anyway, I reckon I deserve it.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Good evening everybody, I have yoga-ed today, have you? Hmmm...methinks enthusiasm for this adventure is waning. Still, we've been yoga-ing for a month so that's not bad. I have definitely developed the habit of yoga-ing every day and I am feeling the benefits of it. One interesting thing I've noticed is that if I play my violin right after yoga-ing, I seem to play better. I think the reason my violin playing helps me with my big feelings so much is that like yoga, it is a form of mindfulness. I have to be super focused on what I'm doing, and I have to consciously relax my body because any tension in my right arm causes the bow to bounce. I think when I play my violin right after yoga-ing, I'm kind-of in "the zone."

@soul wow your yoga lessons are awesome value. I'm not sure where you live. I'm in Sydney, where EVERYTHING is ridiculously expensive. Thus sadly, I will only be able to go to a class once a week. You are going to be a master yogi in no time @soul

@soul What pose do you think we should do next week? I was feeling today like I have actually got better at doing the downward facing dog pose over the past few days (notice I didn't do any abbreviating at all there @Ant7!!! ) so I am really liking this idea of focusing on a pose each week.

Re: The great yoga adventure

I have been keeping up with dogging this week, but do not believe I've become any better at it. I'm sticking with my abbreviation 😛

I also think I'd forgotten the first rule of yoga club - you must talk about yoga club until the other person agrees to join yoga club.

@Shaz51 I am eagerly waiting to see what pose @soul thinks we should do next.

@TheVorticon Giggle. Yes, you definitely must talk about yoga club until the other person agrees to join yoga club. That's called nagging...er...I mean encouraging.
