I don't know where to begin...

I don't know where to begin...

Hi

I'm 42, I have 2 children 17yr & 2 yr. My partner and I have been together for 17 years, and he was diagnosed with depression and anxiety 2 years ago. 15 months ago he took a huge step and got help.

Days are up and down, I love him so much and today I realised I have forgotten who I am.

I don't know why it has taken me so long to accept the fact that he is living with these health conditions, so I guess I'm here trying to make sense of the daily struggles and now that I have joined this forum I'm not alone.

I also think I need to talk to a counselor to help me help him a lot better.

Hi @cappy @Lostatsea
I found counselling really helpful both in relation to helping Mr Darcy but also to help me with coping mechanisms.
Things are not the same with MI and coming to terms with the loss and coming to terms with the new normal take time.

If you need a bit of support to help you cope. Carers Aust give up to 12 sessions for free and this can be done via phone call.

Hi @Shaz51

@Former-Member has provided some great options. The other option is to request a referral from your GP to a counsellor or psychologist on a mental health care plan. This will enbable you to get 6 sessions and then following a review you may be eligible for an additional 4 sessions within a 12 month period. Under medicare sessions will be charged at a reduced cost.

I am a big advocate for self care and we so often get caught up in caring and supporting othersthat we forget to also care and support self. I often say we must first look after self to be able to support others.

Re: I don't know where to begin...

Good morning,

Its so great you have reached out well done,

one of the thiings I recognised experiencing similar to what you have written, is

A, investigate and document all the wellbeing contributors in your current situation.

B, We slowly exchanged processed foods for fresh foods. that were not good contibutors to good actions.

C, as challenging as it was at the time to consider phisical movement, we and I "begrudgingly at 1st" introduction of phisical activities to elevate our heart rate which lead to the production of serotonon and Dopamine the feel good hormones.

I think also what has really aided us is me being Merciful toward the illness and my husband.

Please look after you, introduce activites which you enjoy, reasure your loved one that you doing things you enjoy, its all part of the bigger picture for both your wellbeing and that you do love him.

Heres to fresh food and movement.
