What does "triggering others" mean?

What does "triggering others" mean?

I respect the need for censorship in a vulnerable community.

I found it hilarious when one of my posts did not get through because I typed "hohum" without the space and the computer thought I was an up to date rap artist. I had no problem editing that.

In another post someone expressed concern that they might trigger others. What does it really mean and how do we know how we will effect another person by what we post.

We might worry them, we might motivate them, we might anger them, we might amuse them .... we dont really know.

I sat with the word/act/thought suicide in my heart for at least a decade and the first time I saw it on tv I was overjoyed. That was about islamic extremists. Mine was a very inappropriate response unless you try and understand my circumstance. It had been a big hush word for so long and eaten its way into my soul. So I am going to write it once in capitals. SUICIDE. I understand the importance of not getting into gratuitous descriptions, but please do not censor this word.

Recently someone referred me to a loverly post by a loverly lady with lots of loverly ideas, but boy was I triggered. It was well intentioned and from a moderator, who did not know all the specifics about my experience. I went into mad pacing around the house, and had to breath and rock myself a lot, blood pressure goes through the roof and I am on a high dose of blood pressure pills.

I will deal with that on the specific thread, but wonder what others think about this topic?

That seems to be the case @Former-Member

@Appleblossom I have put in a request to have 'ho' removed from the list.

Thanks for the heads up!

Re: What does "triggering others" mean?

Christmas is tricky for me. I have spent a few alone.I sing at midnight mass to take my mind off what it is supposed to mean as in family together. In the last 10 years I have seen my biological daughter once at christmas.

I spent years, since 1986, driving across town so that my foster/step daughter could see her schizophrenic biological mother and have christmas together. Part of Supreme Court case, but I cared about her to make it happen. Dumb idiot me.

So I did a crazy thing. I agreed to take on the daughter of 2 schizophrenics left work and became that most horrible of monsters the step mother. That is my husband asked me, used me to get custody of his biological daughter .. the mother was pretty incapable and had given up a previous child. Protective services assessed me, approved of me etc etc. and I was the Easter Bunny who did ALL the work .. while people I loved were dropping dead .. the other mother spent heaps of time screwing around, getting stoned as well getting her depot meds, she also came from cushy background and her brother gave her a house to live in.

But long and short of it is I had to settle each child in 3 separate households as we were separating and both my daughters have totally rejected me. See why I am a bit funny about karma.

I was trying to find the thread where someone posted about Brene Brown .. so I will explain while we are chatting .. she triggers me .. her accent and mannerisms send me into paroxysms. She might say all the right things .. I married into a similar type of family .. entertained them all in my home as overseas guests .. got their brother/son off the danger track .. looked after the precious child .. my children were not so precious .. stick em on the breast and shut em up .. but make sure my oldest was in eternal bliss because if she wasnt happy she could make my life hell.. it did not turn out pretty ..she got too much power in the family .hmm while I was mocked when I tried to love those in my family of origin.... another reason my brother probably did not make it.

For 15 years, I felt like I was in a WWII camp with the gestapo saying which child do I send to the gas chambers. I chained myself to the kitchen timer so that I could measure out my time equally .. They did not intend to destroy my health but the cultural differences were too big to surmount .. they would talk about the ghettos (housing commission flats) that I came from etc...hmm poor people well I know how the well to do mediate their consciences .. so when Brene Brown .. goes mm mm family stuff .. I explode.

Hope that makes sense

When my brother first went in to psych ward late 1970s he was shocked by the way people spoke about self-harm .. we were not gratuitous or manipulative in our needs .. we did need attention .. as I lived with it in my face for so long I do understand what you are trying to do to be careful with this forum.

Oh oh the program did not want me to type a breast word .. there is a bloody American dictionary in the program so I am now triggered again .. this is Australia . Macquarie dictionary Please

Re: What does "triggering others" mean?

Oh @Appleblossom I am SO sorry. It was me who recommended that video. I completely understand that trigger... sounds and smells - even out of context - can bring back such strong memories. I find specific smells are a trigger for me. Again - I'm so sorry.

I have also just ask the other breast word to be removed from the banned list. Should be sorted by monday.

Feeling reflective and thinking of @Crazy_Bug_Lady and @hiddenite.

Glad that @NikNik interacted with me and tweaked our dictionary to be more suitable to Australian conditions.

Thank you.
