Struggling to Survive

Struggling to Survive

When life has no meaning, no purpose - it is a constant struggle to confront each new day and manage to ‘function’. Detachment from reality is my best defence. Without the emotional connections I am able to survive. The smallest of distractions can send me into a spiral that leads to unwanted and harmful thoughts. Feelings become amplified to the point of physical discomfort. The world closes in and seems to trap me in a never ending dark spiral. I can’t see the way out as I am tossed and turned, battered and bruised. The wounds are internalised and the struggle continues!

So I need to be alone as that is my only certainty for being safe – safe from disappointment, safe from conflict, safe from being let down, safe from violence, safe from further hurt. But when there are few distractions and your mind has time on its own to think, the freedom of space begins to close in. When you realise that the only people in the world that actually know you exist and care about you are the ones that you are isolating yourself from then the heartache and loneliness is magnified. If I was one cube of ice in an avalanche nobody would see me – it would make no difference if I were not there – the avalanche would continue regardless. I am one tiny, insignificant part of the universe that would soon be forgotten – in the wider scheme of life – I may as well not exist!

Re: Struggling to Survive

Hugs @Zoe7 - I do feel as though oceangirl is probably right. I was terrified of hospital for so many reasons. It wasnt as terrifying at all as i thought. it did help and got me restarted. I wonder with the hell that you are in right now, whether hospital could possibly be any worse at this stage. Also... if you went to hospital and it was worse... you could leave. i know this will scare you but like @oceangirl , i so much want for you to get some relief and for something to change to help you. sending hugs and hugs.

Hi @Former-Member

How are you? How long ago were you in hospital?

I mite be heading back in for a few wks soon myself, I am just waitin on the clinical team to review me. I am trying to think how they can help me and what I can get out of my stay. I think a break from day to day pressure is a start and it will give me time to adjust things in a safe and supportive environment. I am travelling interstate for my admission into a private facility, its a place were I feel comfortable.

When I went into hospital back a few years back I was really scared to go in, I am no longer scared to go in, perhaps a little but everyone is scared even if you have been in before. For me the hospital is the same except last time because it recently had a major redevelopment so that was a bit different. I don't think its about the physical environment but the relationships that are formed in there, that is what makes the differences. Back to being scared, I think for me I took a leap of faith and what was put before me would be what was best for me and I had faith in the process and also I sensed a good vibe so that really helped. I think i went in with a open heart and mind.

I am concerned about my sis and I do understand her depression and how scared she is.. I agree with you something needs to change and I can't understand why the psych only sees her every three weeks because to me she is not well enough to have that amount time between appointments. Please ask your Drs for what you need @Zoe7 . I would encourage you to go into hospital you need more support then what you are receiving now.

Re: Struggling to Survive

Hi @oceangirl - I was in hospital in 2015 - spent a month in hospital after an attempt. the first few weeks are just a blur of really being sedated constantly (willingly) and catching up on sleep.. then 2 weeks of trying to stabilise and build up some strength to face the world again. I was pretty ill at the time.
I was terrified that going into hospital was the ... end? That it would destroy my career, i'd lose my kids, that my whole world would just fall in a hole and everyone would judge me. Not much happened though. I was so lucky a few amazing people helped me with my kids. and my work was supportive (amazingly supportive) i took a year off work in the end, but it was definitely hospital that kick started my journey to getting back to being well enough to work.
I know we're all different and have different blocks/associations/terrors with hospitals/all sorts of things...

@oceangirl - sorry to hear that you are going into hospital but hoping so much that it is helpful for you. i see you around the forums lots and enjoy reading your posts!

Hi @Former-Member

I can relate to your fears around hospital but I am glad it really helped you. It basically did the same for me and it helped restart things for me. I am hoping this will be the last admission for me but I really can't say that because I don't know what is going to happen.

Thank you for your kind words and I do look out for you on the forum.

I think the hardest thing I still struggle with is my sleep and not sure if that was part of your depression and if you have had success in dealing with this- I would be interested to know what you have tried to deal with sleep problem because mine as not improved very much at all.....

Re: Struggling to Survive

actually @oceangirl - that is my biggest problem still i think. I havent found anything that really deals with that.. that i can function with. I have tried different meds but they either dont work for me or even mild doses make me so dopey i cant function, or take away my ability to think fast enough or well enough to work. I survive on around 4 hours a night and that is broken up. i have tried everything, all the sleep hygiene routines, no screens, no caffeine, meditation music, sleepy teas, herbal sleep recipes everything but i cant fall asleep and then i have nightmares anyway. and my kids wake me up too..

Re: Struggling to Survive

@Former-Member@oceangirl I feel like I've forgotten what sleep is like, it must be a good experience if you can get some. I've also tried everything. A big hi to you both.

Re: Struggling to Survive

I have been told it was is one of the hardest symptoms to treat @Former-Member. I have tried sleep hygiene etc and it does not make much of a difference to me either. I struggle to get off to sleep and I have broken sleep too, I get roughly around the same amount of hours as you do too. I was going to book in for a sleep study that I have been putting off since January because of my delayed sleep I didn't think it would be worthwhile having the test.I want to tackle this while I am in hospital re my sleep problem, I think if I got that sorted I would be more like my old self.

The reason why I am also hesitant for the sleep study because I think mine is because of anxiety and hormonal changes not anything to do with what they do for a sleep study (sleep apnea). I am not sure if that makes sense I am pretty tired atm.

Re: Struggling to Survive

aghh @Maggie - it seems to be such a common thing amongst people on the forums! and for something so basic as sleep you'd think there'd be a cure ... without all the nasty side effects. I must start getting ready for bed though. i hope people get at least some sleeep!

@Zoe7 - sending hugs and thinking of you always, no matter what you do, will be here with you. hope you see your gp soon. hugs

Re: Struggling to Survive

@oceangirl yes it does make sense to do with the sleep study. I think zoe has had one too that didnt show anything. I do hope that this hospital stay can help you with it!
heading off to try and sleep now too, hope you get an ok night tonight!
