That's all you can do @lovemyboys. He may have changed from the time you were together but those text messages seem to indicate otherwise. You are justified in being skeptical about his motives. Boosting himself by putting others down doesn't seem to be an honourable way of winning someone over.

I often wonder how things would have turned out if I parted with my ex husband back when I found out he impregnanted a teenage girl during his "midlife crisis" My kids were quite young then. My mother's advice was that no man would want me with a couple of kids. Pretty harsh huh? But then I don't think she was ever happy in her marriage.
He had paid for a termination which never happened and then was paying child support which was when I found out (saw a letter) Don't know what he did but suddenly he wasn't paying anymore (could have been his income minimisation or some dodgy deal)
As far as I knew, he only ever saw the child once. So he has two daughters neither of which he has anything to do with.
I haven't had contact with him since the house was sold following the divorce and then it was only emails. Can't see any reason why I ever will @lovemyboys.

Hmmmm - sounds like he is playing games @lovemyboys. Hope J can see through it and doesn't get burnt eventually. Kids can be lured by material gains like that.
His enthusiasm must have had an unsettling effect on you. Good on you for taking the hands off approach.
A friend of mine was in a similar position. The ex showered the daughter with a new phone, laptop, clothes whenever but she visited. As a teenage girl, she loved it. The older son however, didn't want to have a bar of his father though and missed out.
It's a difficult situation with my kids. My son lives with his father. He has always been treated more favourably. I wouldn't be surprised if my daughter has been written out of his will.

So glad you are in the relationship you deserve with someone who respects you @lovemyboys. My ex husband never wanted to leave. This teenage girl was already married and had another older child as well. He knew he was better off with me.
I hope to find some fulfilment one day. I don't really want to go through life alone and lonely. I'm really hesitant though to put myself out there and meet people after my last two experiences. I made bad choices. It would be nice to have someone to share life with. I miss that. That's what drew me to the last relationship. He was so interested in me. Such a stark contrast from my ex husband who I ad nothing in common with.
Unfortunately that interest was idolisation and turned to devaluation when I least expected it. And so the cycle went.
