Caring for a wife with Borderline Personality Disorder- Sequel to Diary of wife’s hospital stay - holding it together for our family.

Caring for a wife with Borderline Personality Disorder- Sequel to Diary of wife’s hospital stay - holding it together for our family.

This discussion is a follow on from my previous thread Diary of wife’s hospital stay - holding it together for our family, a thread I started when my wife was admitted to hospital for the third time in 6 months and when everything around me seemed to be falling apart. It was a space where I could vent and express my emotions and helped me to process a particularly difficult time not only in my own life but for our family and helped me to hold myself together in order to support my family. For that I am most grateful.

Those of you who were following our journey will know that on my darlings return home I have been encouraged by my councillor to implement some loving boundaries, (lovingly implemented guidelines, not as rules to be enforced), and some self-care for myself.

Now that my darling is home the purpose of this new thread is to document our journey of healing and implementing new boundaries and commitment to self-care, not only so that I can have a visual plan for myself (a bit of self-accountability to follow through with plans in place) but in the hope that it may help others processing similar trials. It will also be an opportunity to track our progress over time.

Well today went a little better @Faith-and-Hope @Former-Member @soul even though my darling spent the day in bed apart from preparing some lunch and going shopping tonight. I tried getting her out of the house first up but decided I was better off leaving her alone and hiding. On the way to shopping I suggested we eat out and she agreed which was nice. (We had bub with us, s1 & s2 were at grans for dinner, our usual Monday night routine).

Made contact with the relationship councillor this afternoon and have our first meeting end of next week. Our pastor contacted her and discussed our dynamics first which was a huge help, (darling is aware of this), I find it very hard talking about stuff that needs addressing, esp in front of my darling, this way the councillor can ask the right questions much easier. Also much easier to talk about stuff that has already been discussed. (Well in theory anyway). Already I can feel resistance to the process building though, despite my darling suggesting we see our pastor about this, I will have to keep gentle pressure applied in order to follow through.

We are aiming on a family day out on the boat tomorrow if the weather report is favourable in the morning, looking good at the moment though. Realy hoping this goes well and disolves some of the tension between us. If the boys can catch a fish that would really add to the excitement.

We actually have a few family activities planned before school resumes, beach, zoo and theme park, (zoo and theme park admission as birthday gifts from grand parents from middle of last year before everything went down hill). Hoping being busy will keep things relatively smooth, always a concern at the end of all that though.

Sounds nice @Determined. Nice to build memories like that whilst the kids are on holidays.

Well we managed to get out on the boat and everyone seems to be having an ok time but our day has been cut short with engine troubles... again...

We managed to get home ok but only just. And lucky we were on an incoming tide. Would not have had enough power to move against the tide. (Very high current area)

I am amazed and thankful that my darling held it together. Clearly she did not pick up on my anxiety.

Another pleasant day in the determined house, we had to head out of town as S2 and I both had councilling appointmens (we actually managed to get them on the same day and save a trip.. bonus), after we took the boys to the beach which they enjoyed very much, my darling looked so content seeing the boys so happy. The strain of a long day starting to show now though unfortunately.

Hopefully some good news with the boat motor, mechanic needs to run some tests but thinks it is most likley a bad batch of fuel that caused our issues. (Not happy jan, 60+ L of fuel needing to be dumped), the alternative though would mean parking the boat up for the foreseeable future due to $$$ so hopefully that is all it is.

My counselling appointment went well this afternoon, I was expecting it to be more challenging than it was but the councillor processed in in a way that was not too difficult for me. We revisited some mindfulness exercises that I usually resist but the way it was presented I can see the benefits, a relaxation exercise came to a halt when I burst out laughing, cant remember what she said but it was obviously funny at the time.
