Caring for a wife with Borderline Personality Disorder- Sequel to Diary of wife’s hospital stay - holding it together for our family.

This discussion is a follow on from my previous thread Diary of wife’s hospital stay - holding it together for our family, a thread I started when my wife was admitted to hospital for the third time in 6 months and when everything around me seemed to be falling apart. It was a space where I could vent and express my emotions and helped me to process a particularly difficult time not only in my own life but for our family and helped me to hold myself together in order to support my family. For that I am most grateful.

Those of you who were following our journey will know that on my darlings return home I have been encouraged by my councillor to implement some loving boundaries, (lovingly implemented guidelines, not as rules to be enforced), and some self-care for myself.

Now that my darling is home the purpose of this new thread is to document our journey of healing and implementing new boundaries and commitment to self-care, not only so that I can have a visual plan for myself (a bit of self-accountability to follow through with plans in place) but in the hope that it may help others processing similar trials. It will also be an opportunity to track our progress over time.

Can't remember the last time I heard that from my darling @Sanatorium23

My darling told me again yesterday if she had somewhere to go she would move out. She is upset her parents won't let hwr stay there. They told her to go home and sort things out with me. I am grateful for their support. The children don't need any more upset.

Have seen some glimmers of hope. Holding on to that hope. My darling is worth it and our children are worth it. It would be so easy to give up at the moment but that is not an option.

I’m really sorry to hear that. I’m not sure about you but I find the gratitude and thanks for ‘putting up with it’ and ‘standing by me’ sometimes makes me feel like a martyr on a pedestal. I’m far from perfect and I’m not going to play the role of saint as this undermines the equality in the relationship. Don’t get me wrong, appreciation is really important as is his acknowledging the support I give him. But I’m with him because I love him, so all I really need to hear is that he loves me too. I’m lucky as he says this often, so I can only imagine how not hearing this would create such emotional emptiness and severance. You clearly love your darling, but I imagine you’re feeling quite alone at times. I don’t know you but it hurts my heart to think this might be true. Is it? I’m quite sure from how you describe her and your feelings that you’ll never give up, but it must be taking an enormous toll. Take very good care of yourself.

Thinking of you too @Determined .....

Some mi’s are highly thankless and ungiving at an emotional level by their nature .... and that makes it seriously hard to separate the person from their mi. I find it helps to focus on the fact that the mi is treatable, and will reduce / stabilise over time. This is the hardest part, when it is still early stages, and they are not contributing wholeheartedly to their recovery ..... tending to lash out at their care-givers and looking for ways to escape behaviour management.

Its a soul-searching exercise to try to work out and establish (fortify ?) boundaries .....

Considering especially the ages of your children @Determined, I think you are doing an amazing job. Your wife is fortunate to have you, as are your children ....

Bless you ..... 🌿

@Former-Member

S1 seems unaffected and oblivious to the events of earlier in the week. Pleased that the issue was able to resolve its self with out the need for intervention. I wonder if the pain relief enabled muscles to relax and resolve the issue as it was after taking that that things improved.

Currently getting around 4 hours uninterrupted sleep each night (based on cpap data). Not nearly enough but better than I have been.

Thankyou for being there, and all my other sane friends, when you all have so much going on yourselves. I dont have much social opportunities to talk about stuff.

Thank you @Faith-and-Hope

I have always survived by separating my darling and who she is from the mi traits, I am starting to believe however that after a while the mi and the person start to become one, so intertwined that it is hard to tell the difference and wonder if they can they actually be seperated any more 😕 ... I hope not.

@Sanatorium23

Thankyou for your reply,

Yes it does get very lonely, a simple 'I love you' and 'thankyou' would go a long way towards recharging the batteries. It is what it is though and I find strength in believing that my darling does not choose to be like this.

I am far from perfect and have a lot of growth of my own to achieve, (working hard at this) but everything I do I do for my darling and our children even if I do often miss the mark.

Re: Caring for a wife with Borderline Personality Disorder- Sequel to Diary of wife’s hospital stay - holding it together for our family.

I have wondered the same with mr. f&h @Determined ..... probably won't be until dx and treatment that we can begin to know.

Re: Caring for a wife with Borderline Personality Disorder- Sequel to Diary of wife’s hospital stay - holding it together for our family.

It's like a role reversal here @Deterrmined ..... everything mr. f&h is doing he is doing with the best of intentions ...... just unable to see how extremely controlling he is and how much that causes dysfunction in everybody.
