Grief & loss - may be triggering

Grief & loss - may be triggering

@ lapses
Early last year 2016 my Dad died after a long painful illness (cancer), which he had been fighting for 6 years.

He survived that long only because of continuous treatments, otherwise he would have been gone in 6 months (they said).

My relationship with him had been somewhat distant at times - due my living in a different state from my entire family for the past 22 years.

Also due to my tumultuous upbringing & family background - which is why I could not stay in the city where I grew up, & chose to live here (3000 kilometres away) instead.

Also wanting to start anew 22 years ago, with needs for greater independence.

Yet those hopes to start a family of my own have never been realized. My marriage ended abruptly, & took my cherished plans & hopes for the future with it.

Then I was confronted with the memories of my SA only 3 months after the end of my marriage - which again turned my life upside-down. My gender identity was shaken, & I no longer felt secure with the sense of identity that I once had.

Followed by a severe health emergency - with 2 emergency bowel surgeries, a stoma & bag for 6 months.

Then a 3rd major bowel surgery to try to put things back together. I almost died twice in hospital they told me.

My siblings & I had found Dad to be emotionally distant & scary right into our adult lives - yet in the last few years we found him to be a kind, intelligent & very caring man. So it was so much harder to lose him.

Due to the stress of having to find a new job, having complex PTSD, & not coping well with the conditions of this occupation (carer) - I've been unable to effectively come to terms with my grief & loss.

It seems that my grief has been largely on hold for the past 14 months since Dad died. I don't feel in touch with it, despite my best efforts to.

I see a psychologist, yet we've been unable to do grief work, or help me to come to terms with the loss of my Dad.

I've remembered very little about him in the past year, which makes it harder - as I have so few memories to draw upon.

yes @Owlunar

health system needs a healthy overhaul

aged care is becoming very aged in what care is actually available

now zoos yes animals are so healing for so many people

can totally understand why your son would have loved helping there.... a lovely memory for you to hold on to .....a way for you to remember him even... you could expand on this in many ways if you felt comfortable

yes they are changing the home care and it will change again even before the next two years. dont pay too much heed to what the organisations are telling you as they are worrying about their jobs. make the most of what you receive now. none of us know what the future holds so better for us to try and n ot think about it let alone worry. says she who has anxiety at moment about moving forward!!! i am my own worst enemy

saw that you are planning a holiday soon cant wait to hear about it and that you enjoyed yourself.

thinking of you dec and all my other friends on this website with much warmth and love xxxx

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Thanks @Former-Member You gave some great ideas & suggestions that I can think about.

Thanks @Owlunar Your experiences are really insightful.

Thanks @lapses Yes you're welcome to tag people onto here. The more the merrier.

Hi @Former-Member Good to see you around.

I read what you all said, thanks really worthwhile.

I'm just so tired that I can barely pen a few words. Only just got home from Yoga class (straight after work). Yoga helps, though it's late evening now.

I had a shocker of a night's sleep last night.

I think the antibiotics are helping, I'm starting to feel better from those infections (& virus). It's been almost 4 weeks already.

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

You too @Adge

Yoga seems really worthwhile for you. I would do Yoga (but I am not very flexible.. or coordinated)

Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better

In response to: Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

Re: Grief & loss - may be triggering

@Former-MemberI'm not coordinated, & not at all flexible either.

Yoga has helped me to slowly improve that - as well as being great for relaxation & to relieve anxiety.

It was a terrible struggle to go back to yoga class after my last (3rd) major bowel surgery (2 years ago) - I was a mess, so weak & so inflexible.

Slowly I've been getting back to where I was (a bit).

My previous yoga teacher said that anxiety was the main reason that she ever started to do yoga in the first place. It helps with that.
