SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

WINTER BLUES 😞

Does anyone else start getting really down in May? As long as I can remember - may is a difficult month for me, long before the Major Depression label. It spirals into slothful living and sleeping the winter away. Even though I love autumn weather, on the inside I just want to go to sleep and bide my time 'till spring comes - when I know i get a burst of energy back. Lots of people suffer SAD, and for some its serious. Its a well documented condition, and in my case compounds existing depression & anxiety, the tipping point. I noticed here on the forums last year that a lot of us struggled to get through winter, even here in mild Australian weather. What, if any are your winter blues symptoms in the winter?

Re: SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Hi @Kurra, means a lot that you checked in on me this morning. I forgive you for disappearing last night, it was late and I can be so slow replying. Hope you're rested today. I am ok'ish I think, mood very low but not so many suicidal thoughts, anxiety and hopelessness... just flat, having my first cuppa. Didn't want to get up but we must. Had trouble filling the kettle with the mountain of dishes in the sink so might make that a priority today. Kinda weird I can do my 1/2days Volunteering but can't keep house. Fighting the urge to quit after a couple things this week, is it worth it? Really dragging my feet but some weeks it gives me an excuse to finally take shower. Wondering what f I should try ringing S3 after yesterdays tension. Maybe he's better off without me, let it be. He hasn't answered my tx saying "we seem to have got disconnected, hope you're ok?" I'm so scared.

Hi @Former-Member what sort of volunteering do you do?

I've lived near Darwin for 17 years and moved recently down south. This will be my first winter in many years. Not sure how I'll handle it. I'm freezing already.

I'm guessing S3 is a child of yours, perhaps an adult. Sometimes I find it's best just to give mine some space and let them ring me when they choose to. Depends what the conflict is about. Hoping the situation works out for you.

@Former-Member at least you're getting out and doing something worthwhile. I'd like to do some volunteering at some stage.

@Former-Member I get cabin fever in this cold, wet weather. Not used to it. I normally isolate a lot anyway but it's gone to a new level since I moved here. Could be the climate.

Re: SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Hey @Former-Member - just thought I'd pop past and say hi to you here. It's been really sunny and as warm as we can hope for here over the last couple of days. I just checked the forecast and it's changing though. It's getting incredibly cold overnight and in the mornings. Like three pairs of socks kind of cold last night 😏

Right now I'm sitting in the sunshine appreciating it while it lasts, thinking of you and hoping there's something positive happening for you today.

💕

Hi @Former-Member

Believe me - the world and everyone in it would not be better off without you - that is faulty thinking - you have a right to be here and make your own way in the world and enjoy the good moments - however few and far between

Adult children can be narky at times and for whatever reason your son has chosen now - no good fighting with him about it - just turn the phone off and leave him with whatever it is that drives him - he will have it anyway

And don't worry about getting passed over with a voluntary job - not worth the effort but I have had that happen myself and just do what you are doing - even 1/2 days are good -

Remember the weather plays a great part in how many people including me feel at this time of year - and wait - the sun is setting as early as it will this year - it is already what they call the winter solstice - this will be over in a few days - yes - I know that sounds as if I am counting my blessings but this helps me survive every winter

One thing I don't understand is why people - well - why you - have SI because people are narky or fail to answer your notes - people don't bother actually - you can send a bereaved person $100.00 worth of flowers and get a brief thank you - and that's all - and that's not why the flowers were sent either - so - please don't bother about that - it's not worth it

If you think your sons are better off without you - then let them think whatever - that's no reason to check out - truly - it is not - and I feel so saddened that people feel that way - more unhappy than you can think - I have always valued my own life and only wish other people could value theirs

But I feel for you - I truly do - I know you have pain and that can be hard to endure esp in the winter - try and keep the temperature in your home at a steady level of warmth if you can - and eat well -

I am thinking of you

Lots of hugs

Dec

Re: SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Hi @Former-Member
I'd be continuing with the op shop. It gives you a number of advantages:

It gets you out of the house
You get to mix with other people
It makes you shower at least twice a week
It gives you a chance to feel good about yourself in giving to others
It gives you a chance to have a good old chat
These are all positives.

Don't worry about the youngster being given the keys. It's a real pain having the keys because you've always got to make sure you're there first.

How are you going this afternoon? 💕🎶💕
