14th year house bound

14th year house bound

Hi Everyone,

I am new hear, after being removed from other mental health forums for my depressive thoughts i thought i would give this forum a try, this is my story.

I am 33 live with my mother, i am almost compeatly housebound, i leave my house once in the morning for a walk at 6am and maybe once during the week, both times i leave the house fill me with great anxiety, i have no friends, (the last friend i had was in 2001), i have never had a job, never had a girlfriend and never been able to leave my parents side, my father died in 2001 and i have always suffered seperation anxiety the last time i had a night away from home was 1994 for one night (parents had to pick me up at midnight because i was so frantic).

I have spent most of the past 14 years in my room, or the shed, never much out of the yard, no one in my town knows me, people stare and ask each other behind my back if any one knows who i am.

I have only had an income for the past year and spend the previous 7 with no income at all, mum had to use all of her life savings to allow me to live with her and she now has nothing.

I only want to live long enough to care for her in her old age and then i plan to take my own life, i knew from an early age my life would turn out like this, but had no idea how horrible it would be, every day is the same, i often wonder why i keep going, i have very little contact with family (maybe once a year) and i am really struggling to keep going.

Please don't feel distressed about what i am saying, and i am so sorry if i have offended anyone, it is just how i feel.

Their is so much more, but i will leave it at that for the moment, i am shaking and the anxiety is kicking in so thankyou for reading and i will add more later.

Jacques

Re: 14th year house bound

For those of you who haven't met me before, I guess I should introduce myself.

I was officially diagnosed with depression in December 2013 and thats when I started on meds. Looking back, I can't be sure when this relapse started. I can see evidence going back a few years. I managed to get through my first bout in my 20's with the help of friends and exercise. Back then I didn't know about other options. My family would not have been supportive of counselling.

Just for the experience, we lived in Melbourne for a year (2014). This coincided with my first year of recovery. Yes moving is stressful, but on the upside I was removed from the social pressures of friends and family. Sadly mum lost her battle with cancer in April that year. Fortunately I was able to come back up and be with her at the end.

While in Melbourne, my wife found me a wonderful psychologist who specialises in ACT. It really helps to have a psych that you click with. He was like that for me.

I also joined another MH forum last year which is where I met Karen and Jacques. I now consider them poster children in their own fields of mental ill-health - such loving and giving people in spite of their conditions.

Just before Xmas, we moved back to sensible weather, family and friends.

I am not fully recovered, but I am doing amazingly better. Tough days aren't usually too bad. I am better equiped to know what to do to look after myself to get through it. Unfortunately, my black dog (I named him Luka) ate that part of my brain that handles words, memory and concentration. I often can't think of the word for something, can't spell (used to be very good at spelling), or simply miss-read words. I know that that part of my brain is rebuilding.

More info about me will come out in bits and pieces, but that should do for now.

Hope you all find some time to just listen to the sounds around you. Just like listening to the sun setting, I like to listen to / feel the distance between me and the source of different sounds. It helps me to be still.

Tony

One question that popped up for me is about ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy ) can you tell us abit about it and how you find it helpful?

Thanks 🙂
