1st appointment with psychiatrist - what to expect?
Hi guys. I'm new here. I've only been diagnosed (well I'm not even really sure about that because not quite sure what the diagnosis is?!) a few weeks ago and started on meds. I went back to my GP today who has now referred me to a psychiatrist because she hasn't come across my symptoms before. I have never been to a psychiatrist and I was wondering if anyone could give me a heads up about what to expect? Any tips on how to prepare myself? I'm kind of nervous because I'm a nurse myself so I'm feeling very vulnerable as the patient for a change. Thanks in advance x

Oh k that makes sense. I'm ok... just laying here. My chest hurts and I'm very tired. But mind running a million miles an hour. I wish there was just an off or a pause button so I could just breathe for a while. My mum is over visiting and she is sick with a cough and vomiting so she's laying on the other end of the couch. How are you @outlander ?

Yeah they should appear soon @Former-Member Oh yukky hope u dont catch what shes got! I know about the button if only hey. Thats ok we can feel like that together. As long as your mum throws up in the bathroom ill lay next to you Could you try a deep breathing exercise or mindfullness for a bit?
Im ok just dealing with nausea that even maxalon isnt working for and watching greys anatomy episode 15 now

@outlander she has had maxalon and is no longer vomiting so you can jump on with us. We have a spare vomit bag if your maxalon isn't working! What's happening in episode 15? I don't know anything about mindfulness... this is one of the problems, I don't know any techniques or anything. I read about deep breathing - in for 5, hold for 5, out for 5, then 2 normal breaths. I guess because I've only seen the psychologist twice and the psychiatrist once it's just been me talking and not them telling me what I can try to do to cope

Yeah i thought it might work but its not. I dont need to theow up though it would be easier but nope it just bubbles away constantly

Oh wow i can give you heaps of coping strategies. Im abit tired to list them all out but i will do that
I wouldnt do 5 seconds id do 3 seconds for deep breathing. Its pretty much the same thing just not for 5 seconds Oh actually hold on ive got a coping strategies thread full of ideas including mindfullness give me a sec and ill find it for you. I think it will really benefit you
Add to your list to ask psych- need coping strategies. They will give you some and explain it to you
