Long Term caring and it's problems

Long Term caring and it's problems

Hi everyone, I am hoping to get support and advice from other carers. I have been a carer since I was 10 for my mother, then my husband and also my daughter. My mum is 94 and now in a aged care home but relies only on me. My husband passed away. My daughter is 29 and has an intellectual disability, depression and anxiety.

It has all finally caught up with me and I am suffering from depression. I do not work. My daughter has been living out of home for two years and I am considering moving her back home because I don't seem to be able to look after myself, only someone else.

I really would love to hear from other long term carers to see if what I am going through has been experienced by others and they could offer me some advice.

hi my friends @Former-Member@soul@Shaz51@Faith-and-Hope

I've had a pretty rough couple of weeks, funny how it seems like forever. Daughter had a MI episode and I was advised to call an ambo. Fat lot of good that did except traumatise her. She been staying with me since then. No more depression for me just into high alert carer mode. She's been back at her home 2 nights now, so it's back to tons of texts and counselling phone calls when she finds nothing is going right. Psyc app on Tuesday to review her medication, 2 weeks waiting for this with no help.

Think I just had a knee jerk reaction to some critism today and resigned from the pet rescue. 😞 I also have 2 dogs here during their heartworm treatment, crated 24 hours a day. Let out only for the toliet on a lead. Feeling so sad, feeling like a fraud and a failure. 5 dogs,3 cats and a MI daughter have just tipped me over the edge. There must be something else in life, I just have to go out and find it. I would love a part time job but don't quite know how to juggle that with daughters reliance on me and all her appointments. How does everyone work and juggle this? I would really love to hear how you do it

thats all for now, sorry I had a big winge xx

Hi @JoJo99 ..... 💕

Sounds like it's been pretty rough. You may have had a knee jerk reaction to criticism, but there is a limit to any carer's coping ability , so that figures ....

As far as a part time job is concerned, look for something with shifts, like retail, where you can negotiate shifts to work around your daughter's appointments, and swap shifts with others as suits you all ...

Hi JoJo, sorry things are hard for you at the moment. Can you go back to the Wildlife role, explain you've been under a lot of personal stress and it came out sideways maybe. You seem to love animals. Don't give up your passions. I do some volunteer work for Vinnies, that gets me out the house at least until you find played work. But right now, maybe dont running away - turn and face the pain - 'self care' is the key, restoring balance within first is more important than running around looking for it - adding stress. Its hard but do draw some self care boundaries with your daughter so you don't become resentful, big hug🌷💕 Lapses

Re: Long Term caring and it's problems

Hi @JoJo99! I know it's been a while since you posted this and so you may not see my response but maybe someone else will and it might be helpful to them. I consider myself a sort of long term carer, in that I grew up in a violent household and from a young age I was the one putting myself in the middle of fights and standing up to my father and for my mother and bro. I was always looking for ways to help them and as a young person that was akin to metaphorically hitting my head on a wall. Trying to get them to see the same future we are now living, if things didn't change. In my teens, I started trying to get help for my older brother.. Pretty much impossible. Then when I was 22 I went through some severe trauma and during my recovery realised I'd probably had depression since childhood. Luckily I don't have mum or bro dependant on me for physical care. But mental health care seems to be my thing. I have nursed my grandparents through end of life care though. I find I go out of my way to help people perhaps because I feel they listen more than my own family. It gives me the satisfaction of results. I also have pets, again it's therapeutic but also you care for them and then they respond as they should. My fight with depression has been epic.. I have so many tips/hints.. I want to write a book. I also had issues caring for myself and learnt to do that as a necessary part of dealing with depression. It's a practice like learning to ride a bike. Re your daughter, does she need to be at home with you? Will she become more dependent on you if she is? Will it be more convinient for you to assist her if she is at home. Maybe moving closer to her may help. I continued living at home so I can intervene, even though it was mentally bad for me. I spent most of my time out of home and ran to friends houses and cried most nights. Then I learnt to stay on top of my depression and continued living at home to intervene and save money. Now I live in a separate part of the house, I partitioned it and built a kitchen myself. I hope to move somewhere close so I can keep a weekly eye on them.
