coping strategies

coping strategies

So I went to my gp app. I am now on the MH plan. She prescribed an anti depressant. I havent filled the script yet. I also have an app with a psychologist in 17 days. Am I counting? you bet.. I am terrified.

I am so anxious. Hiding as best I can. How do i not " see" any triggers until then.. I seem to be surrounded by them.. eveywhere I look. I cant seem to turn my head off .. the thoughts run in circles 😞

Hello @birthmother

Oh I really feel for you and how hard things have been of late, it's great you have taken the big step to asking for some support riht now, I can only imagine how difficult that must have been for you to talk to the GP about how you are feeling?

It's normal to feel scared going into your first sessions with the Psychologist, but maybe it's more helpful to try not to worry about that just yet and instead focus on looking after yourself between now and then.

Are you doing any self-care at the moment that helps you with your racing thoughts, things like exercise, music, reading? Are there any things that help you to feel more relaxed or ditracted from those worries?

Kindest,

Lunar 🙂

Hi @birthmother,

That in between time when waiting for appointments can seem like a life time.

To answer your question - how to not 'see' triggers? It might be helpful to write down what they are, and then rate them on a scale of 1 - 10 (10 being the most intense trigger), and in the next few weeks avoid the intense ones.

@janedoe2 just started this thread about exposure and triggers, which you might find useful. Perhaps @janedoe2 can offer some advice about how to manage triggers.

Over the next few weeks, it might also help to get back to basics for health - eating well, resting, and connecting with support (friends, family and forums friends), reading, relaxing. These basics can really help and maintain mental health. What have you got planned over this period?

Smiling mind is also a good phone app too @birthmother that can help when you encounter a trigger. I also have a coping strategies thread as well thst maybe @CherryBomb can link?

Re: coping strategies

How to avoid my most intense trigger when it seems to be in the news every day..on the front page, on the telly..adoption is everywhere. Most of the general population think it is this wonderful altruistic thing when in reality it is about loss and trauma. I am attending my beautiful grandsons 1st birthday this weekend. As much as I adore him the relationship with him ( and his sister ) will be tinged with sadness. I will once again have to hide my feelings and tears ( with good reason ).

When you are advised to spend time with family and friends but know you have to lie your way through it is very stresssful. Yet to avoid them is also stressful. Damned if you do and if you dont. It is hard to hide sadness.

In reality I have no family or friends who get this. It terrifys me that a psychologist is going to tell me that adoption is a good thing. My greatest fear is she will not get it either.

Re: coping strategies

It is mothers day this Sunday. The rules of the game dictate I must remain invisble and silent. Only the adopter has the right to speak or care. My poor baby 😞

Hello @birthmother. At the beginning of recognising triggers and management of them it is helpful to write down each trigger. Also write physical reactions. This info can be shared with psychologist and start to break down what is happening.
While a trigger is happening it helped me to acknowledge conciously that 'this is a trigger' and breath. Some deep breaths then normal diaphragm breathing. This helps to calm your initial reaction and stop it from spinning out of control. Once we become aware it is happening it helps to not freak out. It is happening at the moment and it will eventually improve. I hope this helps.
