I'm in a nest

I'm in a nest

I'm making a nest because I'm not feeling very ok and I would like to have a place to retreat to while I ride it out. Everything is chaotic all around and inside me almost all of the time, and I need some time out from it. If I make a nest here I can carry it in my pocket and know it's there for me.

In this nest it's very cosy. There's lots of soft pillows and blankets. Some are made with bright colours, mostly greens, pinks and yellows, and some are made in much deeper shades of purples. The nest is egg shaped so it can be climbed into it but still be a hiding out place. There's lots of fairy lights strung around the nest. They're different shapes and some are warm yellow, some are cool white and some are multi-coloured. They can be adjusted to vary the amount and type of light inside. There's also music which can sometimes be heard throughout the whole nest and sometimes it's playing from the headphones that are always kept on the pile of cushions. There's a lava lamp as well, and squishy glitter balls to squeeze and roll in hands. There are an endless supply of soft creatures to hold or sit with. There's always flowers in the corner and this morning they are gerberas standing tall and proud, on a little wooden table. Next to the vase is a teapot, colourful and quirky, with a collection of teacups and mugs.

Right now I am sitting in a pile of cushions very still with my knees to my chest, my head on my knees and my arms wrapped around my legs. There's no music at the moment so it is very quiet. Only a couple of strings of lights are turned on and they're twinkling yellow balls, so it's very dark but there's still some light inside. I have a soft blanket around me. It's peaceful in here.

I have to sit here until I can work out what to do next. I'm surrounded by people but I don't remember feeling so alone. I feel scared of making any move right now because I don't know what the right move is, and I don't trust any direction. I'm hoping that if I can hold out like this for just a little bit longer I will know what to do.

Right now I don't want to talk but I don't want to feel so alone either, so I'm asking for someone to please come and sit quietly next to me until I can move from my ball or I am made to move from it. I don't know when that will be, but I know I can't stay like this forever.

@Former-Member I was wondering how you were going bobbing around the ocean in the dark in your book pod. Maybe we should get you some emergency flares to set off for if you ever feel lost in the darkness - any sort of darkness.

I can relate to what you are saying about losing your words. When I first came to Forum Land I had an extra super tricky experience and I then spent a week in TOR with @Zoe7 and a few other people without saying a single word. I communicated for the entire week via pictures.

Thank you for saying it is ok to tag you in my big muddles bookish. If I do that, then you need to know it is absolutely 100% ok not to respond. I don't have a strong need to actually converse when I am super struggling, it's more about being heard.

Is there something in particular that you are extra stuggling with at the moment? I am happy to listen. But if you just want to snuggle in your book-pod in the nest, then that's a bazillion percent ok too. I am super glad you found Forum Land, bookish.

The really big feelings squash my words and make the self-hate and self-doubt even louder than usual. I might write more later. Thank you for being here, @Phoenix_Rising. And thank you for being you. 🐢

{Sneaks in and leaves this for @Former-Member, to counter all those super giant feelings of self-hate and self-doubt}. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aF7yFOlOk9M

*also pops past to leave a something for @Former-Member in the nest while I sit here in a fluffy bean bag with not-really-working words as well, to say I'm here with listening eyes too, even when there aren't words to hear/hear just yet*

Re: I'm in a nest

Good morning in the nest 😊

I had a pretty huge afternoon yesterday and was feeling all kinds of things last night. I almost always feel better in the morning (I realise I say this all the time now too) so now I can write the post I wanted to but couldn't type. It's an essay (sorry in advance) and there's no need to read or reply, but it's one I want to share.

I hit the point yesterday where I knew I really couldn't tolerate this housing stuff anymore. I had a huge increase in symptoms that make life hard, including panic, vivid nightmares, wonky sleep, trouble making sense of anything, lots of shaking and chest pain, feeling like I was on guard all the time, scary "I can't breathe" wake ups at night, and very dark and twisty thoughts. They coincided with a bunch of circumstances happening that have been so confusing and hard to manage. The last one and maybe my tipping point, was hearing that funding I had earlier been told I could access to actually move that I needed and couldn't have moved without, wasn't there and maybe never was. Even if I could have found and secured another house, I couldn't have gotten to it anyway. When my mental health worker came over with some fix-it options (which almost always help me), I took a big breath and said that I couldn't do it anymore and it felt like my survival depended on this coming to an end asap, which was really scary.

Then I made a really hard decision and phone call to ask some very unsupportive support, to support me to get this house in my name and sign a lease here. It all happened so fast. The owner jumped at the opportunity to keep us here, which makes sense because I am a really good tenant (despite paperwork applications not saying so) and I think he knows I will stay quiet and not ask for anything now too. Following the house inspection last week, the real estate also jumped at it. And the 'nothing ever happens even though we say it will' housing organisations seemed to be able to make it happen really quickly (I'm tipping that's because I have been a big pain for them and now they can walk away, which is exciting for me too).

I still have some hurdles to get through, including submitting the same application form that has been repeatedly knocked back by others, to live in the house we've been in and looked after this whole year before a lease will be offered. I was hit with something about needing to pay the first month rent that the missing housing organisation put up for us all that time ago, but failed to mention or say anything about until now. And there are processes to go through (processes and I don't tend to gel well). But I know I can find a way to do those things because I need to ☺

It isn't exactly ideal and I don't do 'sit quietly and suffer in silence' particularly well, epsecially given I know what's happened here has been and is so not ok in lots of ways. The way this has played out has definitely further mashed my already mashed enough brain. I really wanted to keep fighting this but I can't right now. I will definitely not give up, but I need to stop now so I can keep going. Fighting this stuff is what I do best whereas stopping is not, so this is really hard. I learnt my lesson about needing to stop and pause sometimes, earlier in the year and I haven't forgotten it.

There's lots of not ok here, but there's great too. The area isn't great, but nowhere here is and staying here is a choice I made for the school (plus the house is barred up like a prison so it's safe in that respect). We shouldn't have been housed here in the first place, but we were and we found the good so now we have to keep it. The maintainence issues really suck, but maybe won't be as hard to live with in warmer weather. I can make apricot something (jam maybe haha) with apricots from the most awesome apricot tree, and grow tomatoes in the very cool garden. We can walk and ride to school every day. The fish can keep their trampoline and still decorate the concrete in chalk drawings, and Noodle and Mouse are welcome here. I can build up my rental record as being a good stable tenant again, which was something that was blown up and destroyed so painfully and unfairly in the big bang. I can sit under my favourite trees until I get strong enough to get us out of here and on to better things - the things we do deserve. And I won't have to pack any boxes 😆

@Phoenix_Rising I think this is choosing to "tolerate the problem" and "feel better about the problem" after "problem solving" stopped working (what awesome practice for using skills this will give 😉) @Mazarita I think this is playing the horrible housing game I know you understand too, @Teej I think this is swapping good for bad and bad for good and @Faith-and-Hope this is parking it up for now yeah? Provided the world doesn't end, I think we have a house @Former-Member, @Former-Member, @Maggie, @Shaz51, @Appleblossom and a huge crew of awesome cheer squad (which for lots of reasons I won't tag all of but I feel so thankful for) who I think will understand my painful need to do this. This is the right choice for right now, and it feels bittersweet but like such a huge relief ☺

It's a wonky house, but it's going to be a place to call home for our little team and that's worth celebrating 🏡💗☈🌈🎉

Thanks for reading 😊

Re: I'm in a nest

Hi @CheerBear,

It sounds like you have been up and down and mashed and puddled and around and and around and around...and now you very nearly almost have a house. Not a great house, not even a good house, but a house. And hopefully a house (any old house) = stability, which = less mashed up brain, which = being able to oh so slowly take tinsy tiny baby steps (while sometimes falling over and sometimes going backwards) towards better things.

It sounds like you are doing a super amazing job at tolerating the problem, after problem solving stopped working. And by tolerating the problem as it is right now, it opens the door for the current problem to become the foundational stone of moving beyond the problem - literally, because as you say, building up a solid rental history in this house will help you to get a better house down the track.

It isn't right and it isn't fair that it is this hard for you to secure housing for you and your LF. Acceptance definitely isn't about saying it is ok. It simply is what it is right now. I can't wait to hear you report in that the lease has been signed super soon @CheerBear.

Re: I'm in a nest

Great news @CheerBear

Even given the so so area and condition of place.

Stability does have a lot going for it. Maybe moving can be done another time when kids can help pack some boxes.

Home is where the heart is.

I like a little wonky as I am still cross with rellies with vogue houses and a dodgy sense of social conscience.

Re: I'm in a nest

@CheerBear I learned the lesson ' it's not a destination but a journey after all' the hard way also. Stopping feels good. You are wise and know what is right for you and LF. Always reading, listening in the background, but very little to offer. Cheers to you @CheerBear...Welcome home...

Re: I'm in a nest

I read your post with heartbreak and total admiration @CheerBear.

There is good in that house. You post it in pics lots and stories you tell. The good is the stuff you make. It sucks that the bad is stuff you can't change.
I loved that you can see that sometimes life throws us apricots and we can make apricot jam. It's not the same saying but it made me smile.
You can do this cheerbear. And I believe you'll be so much stronger after for getting through this. You are navigating things you should never have had to navigate but you are doing it and doing it with grace. I'll leave you this to ponder

Sending lots of hugs and encouragement.
