Craft Corner

Craft Corner

A place to chat and share all things crafty!

What's your favourite craft? Is there anything you're working on at the moment? What would you like to create/work on (I have heaps of "one day" project patterns and ideas that I know I will probably never get around to, but it's nice to imagine)? I'd love to hear!

I have absolutely no artistic side to me and stick figures are the extent of my drawing ability, but I really enjoy learning and trying out new crafts. I learnt crochet during a stay in a prevention and recovery centre and it's something I pick up often when I am feeling blue, I need a distraction or I'm just a little bored. I've tried paper crafts too, although I didn't really get far with anything. Sharpies are some of my best friends and when I find my hands need to move I have a collection of smooth rocks that I draw on (different coloured circles) which often relaxes me. Sometimes I dust off the sewing machine and sew as well. I walk around spotlight for a fun outing 😉

Looking forward to hearing from you all 🙂

Re: Craft Corner

@outlander oooh I'm super excited that you could tell Mr Narwhal is a Narwhal. SOMEBODY (not mentioning any names @Bunniekins) thought he was a platypus.

Re: Craft Corner

so excited to see what you've made, @Phoenix_Rising!!

inspired by all your all activities, we finally got into the crafting again with some dreamcatcher work. our main dream catcher maker is not around at the moment so we just did a small and simple one.

it still needs feathers but we want to try and find some rqainbow colouredones to use to finish it off

@OhanaSystem that is beautiful and has given me a huge smile to see ❤ Rainbow is my favourite colour and rainbow feathers would be an awesome addition. Have you made many dream catchers? Thank you for sharing ☺

Re: Craft Corner

thank you @CheerBear. yes we've made quite a few, even some that are almost as tall as us. we have one that hangs in our craft room which is one of our biggest we've ever made. here is some pictures of it:

the biggest hoop is maybe 45-60cm? i think

Re: Craft Corner

Really pleased to see you crafting @OhanaSystem. Simple is still so lovely isn't it! Very pretty and delicate.

May I offer a word of ... warning information ... about using found feathers here ... years ago I had been commissioned for some dreamcatcher work, which I did a significant amount of at the time, and the people gave me a bag of found feathers to use to decorate it with. Things happened and I was very fortunate to escape prosecution for being in possession of quite a number of those different Australian protected species feathers. It matters not at all if you picked them up off the ground, salvaged them from deceased birds, or captured the live bird and took the feather from them - it's prosecutable and fineable unless there are proper licenses involved.

Moral of story - know your protected species feathers.

@outlander I can knit and crochet. I learned to knit when I was about 10 or 11, and couldn't 'get' it. Shoved it angrily in a drawer and got it out about a month later when I'd thought about it more and I managed to 'get' it then. Ma was not a helpful teacher of anything except self loathing and for that she was masterful.

I loved my aunt's crochet work, but she would not teach me cos ma would not let her.

I taught myself using this book to make one of these vests

to wear the following weekend. I often made one the night before I wanted to wear it, but I did that with alot of my clothes.

I sometimes use the centre pattern to make my mandala vests for old times' sake.

@Phoenix_Rising You certainly have learned the skill very quickly, which is really pleasing to see. I enjoy seeing / hearing you so excited about it and about what you are choosing to make next, and next and next.

@outlander I think how 'easy' something is also has to do with how we learn and how easily we find it to learn new hand, eye, think co-ordination too.

You could try that video @Bunniekins put up further back about the scarf, the Moogly one with Wool and the Gang, to see how you like the look/ feel of knitting etc. you could use some string and 2 pencils to get the feel for it easily enough too.

the spruce learn crochet is a beginner for crochet to give you an idea - there are links to videos from the images.

HOpefully, that will give you something to think about and ponder upon to see which you'd like to start with. I'm more than happy to try to answer any questions you might come up with too. Nothing is too silly, we all had to start at the beginning!
