Craft Corner

Craft Corner

A place to chat and share all things crafty!

What's your favourite craft? Is there anything you're working on at the moment? What would you like to create/work on (I have heaps of "one day" project patterns and ideas that I know I will probably never get around to, but it's nice to imagine)? I'd love to hear!

I have absolutely no artistic side to me and stick figures are the extent of my drawing ability, but I really enjoy learning and trying out new crafts. I learnt crochet during a stay in a prevention and recovery centre and it's something I pick up often when I am feeling blue, I need a distraction or I'm just a little bored. I've tried paper crafts too, although I didn't really get far with anything. Sharpies are some of my best friends and when I find my hands need to move I have a collection of smooth rocks that I draw on (different coloured circles) which often relaxes me. Sometimes I dust off the sewing machine and sew as well. I walk around spotlight for a fun outing 😉

Looking forward to hearing from you all 🙂

Re: Craft Corner

@Catcakes Ooooh a coral reef would be super, but perhaps a bit beyond my current skill level. I look forward to showing you my creation when it is done.

Re: Craft Corner

Sounds wonderful @Phoenix_Rising!

I took my handkerchief with the crochet edging being worked on it with me today and have almost finished it, just deciding on whether to add more or leave it as it is, so I'm pretty pleased.

@Catcakes I carry a tiny tatting project in my handbag so I am never caught without something to do no matter what. I usually take a crochet project and the tatting stays waiting for the really long waits.

@Bunniekins OH my , the excitement of waiting for those packages to be delivered! If you ordered from that place, they have special packaging that I will let you discover for yourself. It's part of the joy and wonder of ordering from them and their sister company! I do love them.

Re: Craft Corner

@Former-Member I have ordered them. I love ordering online and cannot wait to show you the yarn and get some ideas on simple patterns from youtube. Cannot wait to see your handkerchief that is so lady like. I should learn crochet.... knitting first then crochet then sewing I think. Get my wee head around all of that.

@Former-Member SunShower I imagine you to be like a younger Miss Marple. All ladylike with a mind like a steel trap 🙂

I thought I'd make a general sort of information post for anyone wanting to learn to crochet, and many other crafts, or to expand your current skills in the craft you currently enjoy, with a teacher at your side.

Each state has a Country Womens' Association, commonly known at the CWA .

Most branches of the CWA will have craft classes held at varying times/ places etc. You can find the state office on the net and then find the town/ city closest to you, or if you're travelling/ on holiday etc.

Often they have a listing available of what class, when and where and pricing structure (usually really inexpensive). They are generally worth attending as CWA craft teachers have to pass exam testing to become certified, however, not all areas would necessarily have certified teachers on hand.

Also, many Neighbourhood Centres offer craft classes.

University of the Third Age (U3A) often have a variety of classes taught by varyingly competent teachers, some of which might be suitable offerings. I'm pretty sure you have to be a member and not all branches are worth the membership so do your research.

Hoping this might add an extra layer of appeal for those interested in learning a new skill but not wanting to be quite so public about it.

You made me laugh aloud @Bunniekins

I absolutely adore that image! You have totally made my day! Thank you.

But I think I'm pretty much the same age as Miss Marple ... shhhhhh ....

That steel trap is rusting through a bit these days I think sweet Pea.

Re: Craft Corner

@Former-Member Hi SunShower! How has your day gone? Hopefully splendidly. You will have to describe to me what tacking is. I suppose I could google it but it is much more entertaining when you tell us. 😄

Re: Craft Corner

@Bunniekins I'm sorting a 'thing' so I can properly show you what tatting is. Be back soon.
