Craft Corner

Craft Corner

A place to chat and share all things crafty!

What's your favourite craft? Is there anything you're working on at the moment? What would you like to create/work on (I have heaps of "one day" project patterns and ideas that I know I will probably never get around to, but it's nice to imagine)? I'd love to hear!

I have absolutely no artistic side to me and stick figures are the extent of my drawing ability, but I really enjoy learning and trying out new crafts. I learnt crochet during a stay in a prevention and recovery centre and it's something I pick up often when I am feeling blue, I need a distraction or I'm just a little bored. I've tried paper crafts too, although I didn't really get far with anything. Sharpies are some of my best friends and when I find my hands need to move I have a collection of smooth rocks that I draw on (different coloured circles) which often relaxes me. Sometimes I dust off the sewing machine and sew as well. I walk around spotlight for a fun outing 😉

Looking forward to hearing from you all 🙂

@cara Hi cara you are the second person on the forums who has mentioned scrapbooking ... can you tell me what that is and HI! 😄

Re: Craft Corner

Oooh it's a busy little corner here sometimes. I love that there are so many arty crafty people of all kinds around 💖

@Former-Member you are amazing with the tips and advice and research you share! I wish I could sit in person with you over a cuppa and absorb that knowledge and experience. You asked if I have a machine and I do. It's not a fancy one but it has done what I have wanted it to do. I wish I could show you what I've made with it but I can't here. I have made play clothes and costumes for little people and tried to do some quilting (@snowie is a quilting/sewing person - hope that's ok to share here snowie?). I can't do the measure and precision thing. Anything I do has to be forgiving of that (I love making ruffles in mega numbers for that reason). I pick up stuff and wing it and I don't think actual wearing or using things is great for a 'wing it attitude' 😁 You and @Bunniekins have me tempted to dust if off bring it out for a play though!

@Appleblossom - loved reading your sharing ☺

Hi and welcome @cara ☺ It's nice to see you here. Scrapbooking would be so fun! Do you do journaling (like the type that combines journaling wirh Scrapbooking)? @Bubbles3 has been doing some of this lately from memory.

Re: Craft Corner

@Appleblossom I vaguely remember punching empty needle holes down the lined paper too. I guess it would have been Grade 8 for me, because afer that I went into a not-Home Ec set of subjects.

I thoroughly agree with you about the sharing of stories and experiences.

The perfection of tension on a treadle machine is something I've not been able to obtain on any of the more recently produced machines. If I could, I'd have another old treadle, good ankle excercise too.

Re: Craft Corner

We must be about the same age @Former-Member... I chose non Hom ec stuff too.

Thanks @CheerBear

It is good for me to regain my inner domestic goddess ... lol ...integrate her with the dust/soil analysis demon.

Re: Craft Corner

Hello @cara and welcome to the forum and to the Craft Corner.

Paper crafts can be so pretty and absorbing, there are so many things to do with paper! Cards and scrapbooking is included in my 'oh, pretty paper things' too.

In ages past, the little ones and I used to make paper. They'd make their own gift wrapping paper and colour it, they got into making note paper and a few cards from it too. It's awfully messy! For as many crafts as I've tried, there are still so many I haven't!

If you feel it's okay to, you can share your work, but no pressure. You're welcome to come post at any time especially if you'd like some company as you work toward finishing a project.

Re: Craft Corner

Awesome @Appleblossom I'm picturing a t-shirt with images side by side of a domestic goddess and an earth demon - love it! That really made me smile. Not all schools allowed the non-home ec choices, I was fortunate that where I was did, sounds like so were you. Nice going.

I do think we are of an age together @Appleblossom, from some of the things I've read in your posts.

@CheerBear I love learning and I love sharing information. I sometimes can't help myself. Knowledge is power and for women, knowing how to craft and adapt for when there is less can be an enormous advantage. I can't say what I mean, my mind is a bit clogged on the enormity of it all, but I think you might all understand what I mean.

Ruffles are good! I don't quilt, I don't have the patience or the math skills/ ability. I do patchwork if I need /want to. Oh, CheerBear, do, do dust off that precious sewing machine.

There are ways to choose patterns and sizes and stuffs to make suitable wearable clothes. Also, I can show you how to undo the ones (old, not longer worn) that fit you so you can make the same again! sometimes I don't even undo them, but that can get tricksy.

Maybe we can have a craft along with our own separate projects and all do stuff together at our own pace. (I wrote that in one breath!)

The dinner bell just rang. I shall return a bit later.

Re: Craft Corner

Quietly whispering that I *may* have been Googling dress patterns as a tiny step into actual sewing wearable somethings maybe one day. And then maybe also starting to look at fabric online too. And possibly looking at the seams on my clothes today to work out how they're made.

You're a terribly great influence @Former-Member 😆😁 So tempting!

Another thing to add to the one day list!

❤

(Craft along is a great idea!)

Re: Craft Corner

Oh, goodness @CheerBear, that did make me smile when your email came in! I don't think I've ever been called a terribly great influence before. Still smiling. Thank you.

Depending on how much knowledge and skill you already have to do with sewing a fine and straight seam I usually recommend repurposing something like an old pillow case/ old sheets/ woven fabric clothing [NOT stretch fabric like t-shirt] ) into some type of simple carry bag where you use lots of different techniques in the making, to become au fait with the way the machine, fabric, and you work together.

If you're past that, then really the world is your oyster! What are you looking at making? so interested here!

Not much actual crafting happening here today. But I did get out a crochet wip that has been in the time out box for about a year. One of those twirly whirly circly mandala shawl things I got a bit too frilly with too early in the design.

After all this time of trying to figure out how to utililse the frothy frills (that were a bit of a mistake) and save the work from having to be undone, and not being able to work out something I wouldn't always be going 'yeah, shouldna' have done that, should I' at, I have just undone about 50 rows and rewound the yarn into cakes. (I do love doing the winding - it seems so relaxing)

I had to get a ball/ yarn winder cos much of the yarn I bought cheaply was in hanks and well, there's no other workable way to do it but to use a winder, as I found out. I shudder at the first ever attempt at dealing with modern hanks of yarn - I resorted to scissors!

Anyone else interested in some sort of craft along where we each do our own thing, or a shared thing even, and at our own pace and share our journey with it here? @Appleblossom @Bunniekins @cara @Snowie @CheerBear @Phoenix_Rising @Former-Member @Former-Member @Bubbles3 @Catcakes @Former-Member @TheVorticon @Mazarita @Former-Member

Re: Craft Corner

You totally are (in such a lovely, inspiring, great way) @Former-Member 😊

My sewing skill level is 'ooh this looks like fun' and then I put thread through the needle and my foot on the bit on the floor and try not to get my fingers 😆 I can make things, not well and with no idea what I am doing, but they work (not neatly). I can maybe sometimes make a straight line haha!

My problem is that I want to jump straight into making something I want. It makes heaps of sense to do something like you suggested though and maybe now I am a tiny little more patient (maybe) I can see the value in learning how to do it properly, and I could give that a go.

I do love LOVE the mandala shawls also - soooo many things to make. I'd want good cotton/yarn if I was to have a go at one and I think I'd need to save and calculate for that. Do you have anything planned for what you unraveled?

Glad you found the unwinding relaxing! That's not something I enjoy at all! I've never heard of a ball/yarn winder. Will have to Google that.

I'll sit with the thinking about sewing thing and maybe make a Pinterest board for it (I can never have too many Pinterest boards!). Do you use it?

Craft hugs.

(Can you hear my little brain ticking away tonight? 😁)
