Adventures on Turtle Island

Adventures on Turtle Island

Edit:

Welcome to Turtle Island!

What began as a discussion about personality types based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, quickly found a few of us marooned on an Island in the shape of a turtle (see below), in the South Pacific. We are currently having all kinds of adventures using our MBTI types to work out what might happen. If you're looking for some light-hearted fun, everyone is welcome to come along to stay or just visit. (You can get an idea of your MBTI here if you're interested.) Recently we found a (non-existent) suggestion box on the Island, we think it's come from an elusive island neighbour, so you're welcome to just fly (or swim) past and drop us some suggestions too.

Niqueeta wrote a fabulous prelude to Turtle Island here:

Turtle Island : The Night Before

Spookytookims has written some awesome episodes which can be found here:

The First Morning

Turtle Island episode 2

Turtle Island episode 3 (this one even has pictures!)

Turtle Island episode 4: Shipwreck Salvage

Turtle Island: The Lurgi Strikes (part 1)

Turtle Island: The Lurgi Strikes (part 2)

We now have a welcome sign which is also our Island flag:

And here we are in a message in a bottle on the sand as drawn by Lil-Caterpillar!

Here are some views of our Island - isn't it spectacular?!

Looking forward to bumping in to you!

This is how it all began....

Personality and what makes us us is something I find really interesting and I think there would be a few of us out there who share that interest.

@Spookytookims and I were having a chat about MBTI and the differences in our 'types'. I've found myself pondering what factors in our personalities might influence our interactions and the way a deeper understanding of people may improve communication. I like thinking about what makes two or more people 'click' or not.

While it's difficult to imagine the world being split into a small number of personality 'types', I am interested in what different personality tests offer us in terms of gaining insight or understanding.

Maybe an interesting discussion if anyone wants to join 🙂

Re: All things personality

@CheerBear you know I think we both face the same problem with the exploration aspect of our types. I'm listening to your podcast.. it's just finishing.. and I see how we both can "jump to conclusions" so to speak if we are not careful.

In that you are so in touch with the feelings you absorb, you can project that and think others are feeling the same way, when they aren't.

I can do the same with the information I have, absorbed. I can project my knowledge base onto the other person and assume they know things they don't.

See what I mean? We need to diligently explore as this podcast says. To make sure we don't project.

You: what you are feeling vs what others might be feeling.

Me: What I know, vs what others might not know.

Because we both intuit what we perceive, we can make the mistake of assuming others are intuiting the same, when they actually aren't. You for feelings, me for information.

If you see what I mean... you will understand that the whole dynamic to avoid projection is a potential minefield for both of us. Sigh!

OK I'm about to listen to my podcast now... I'll tell you if you should disregard everything you heard or if it is accurate 😛

Have a good night and I shall see you tomorrow 🙂 Though I will probably post my appraisal of the podcast while you are snoozing. Have a good night. *waves*

Re: All things personality

I'm not 100% sure about some of that. While I agree that I think I can make the mistake of assuming that what I am feeling is what others are too, i believe that my curiosity and genuine want to understand what it is that someone might be feeling leads me to ask and enquire rather than assume, using my feelings to guide that. I do believe that I can get it wrong, and that I tend to use my own feelings as a compass to guide me but ideally (being an idealist lol) I at least try to be mindful of it so I don't make that assumption. I am human and a banana brain at the moment so that isn't working so well right now (said with an ouch). I wonder whether the same thing might happen for someone who thinks that what they know is what is happening too, at the expense of not considering that a knowledge base isn't always 'right'. So rather than you projecting what you know and assuming that others know or not know the same, it can also be that what you 'know' differs from what others 'know' as well, rather just not knowing. If that makes any sense.

One thing that's almost certain, i wouldn't want to take an ITFP on in an argument as an INFP. My feelings would hurt too much haha.

I'll look forward to reading your appraisal when it happens. Enjoy thinking about it all 😉 . I heard your type eat wikipedia for midnight snacks btw haha

Re: All things personality

@CheerBear that's exactly the exploration side of it. That's the diligence I am referring to.

Re: All things personality

Yep just re-read your post again sorry. I like the term "diligent exploration" a lot

Re: All things personality

@CheerBear nah.. wikipedia isn't a reliable enough source for my type 😛

Re: All things personality

😂 of course it isn't. Peer reviewed academic journals are probably more like it I'd imagine @Spookytookims

Re: All things personality

@CheerBear ok... I couldn't finish that podcast. It was so bizarre .. the frames, the meta frames, the hanging things on frames not building new frames.... sorry... but it made no sense to me in relation to how I think. Either they really don't understand INTPs or they have a really strange way of explaining what they are trying to portray.

So how you managed to finish it I don't know, because if my head was getting scrambled I would have thought yours would be. But maybe I was just trying too hard so it jumbled. Either way, they completely lost me.

@CheerBear wrote: (I missed this question earlier so answering it now)

"That then can lead to a challenge for INTPs to explain their thoughts without feeling like they are coming across as cold, insulting or analytical. A challenge it seems, is to connect with others in a meaningful way where things make sense and everyone is understood. What are your thoughts about this?"

hmmmm cheerbear, I don't think this is quite correct. When I go to places and mix with people, like on the beginning of that podcast, people flock to me. I don't get it because I don't really want it. So others seem to connect with me but I don't connect with them.

Online (text) is different because tone and smiles aren't seen so, in that way yes my words probably seem colder than intended because by nature I am analytical.

In real life, however, people ring me for advice, they seem to trust me because I am considered insightful and genuine, and that has always been the way. So in that respect the connections are there from others to me, but I don't feel a connection to them, or rarely.

Coincidently, I even found a quote relating to this and in fact and it is on that "picture" I mentioned to you. This is the quote:

  • "You have a wide variety of interests that allows others to connect to you at various levels, however you rarely ever connect to them"

That gels with my experience more so than how they described it on that podcast.
