Re: Psychologist Toby Watson—Psychiatry is Misleading the Public About Mental Disorders

@Dan & others.
I cannot agree with everything you say Dan. But I respect the right for you to hold this opinion.
My annoyance with the medical and psychiatric fields - is when I hear - you have a chemical imbalance - here take this medicine.
Show me the test results that show what chemical is low & how far from 'normal' range is it.
Also, the ability to label someone as say, Bipolar II - based on a single 'perceived' hypomanic episode and a depressive episode that lasts between 4 days to 2 weeks. Lots of people could be assumed to have had a manic or hypermanic episide by psychiatrists asking certain questions. But if you probe deeper and ask further questions about that so called 'episode' - you may well find that it could be classed as 'normal' behavior.
So I am very wary when a diagnosis is made too quickly or after a single so called episode of mania. And then they want you on life time meds.
I could have a severe migraine - that doesn't mean I should take life time drugs based on a single incident.
I still believe Trauma to be the main reason for many cases of MI. And I would like to see more research and early intervention for this.

@utopia thanks for your comment and it's good that you don't agree me without actually understanding this crime by yourself. However, if you agree with doctors and their chemical imbalance theory, may I know your view on the following cases?

“if i needed to get somewhere i did not know the directions to…they would literally lead me there without me having looked at a map…just with them directing me…it is heady stuff…”

Voices can tell you how to get to a location even if you don't know, meaning asking you to go in this direction, make a left turn, right turn etc..

2): Another experience of a person,

"My subliminal voice always kept me safe at dangerous times and safe from dangerous people. I always seemed to know most events in advance, and this protected me and my family from nasty stuff. But the voice also made me lose almost my whole capital at the age of 40, and showed me that I could start from scratch. And I did. At the age of 53 I re-started to medidate and I experienced qi cong resonance within a month. This seemed to help me a lot with my health issues. I have been hearing the voice since the last 6 years, and the voice tells me exactly what will happen in the future in different parts of the world, and it also tells me what my colleagues are up to.”

3). I am now happy to say that I still do hear voices, yes… and we get along great (and will forever continue to do so). My voices really helped me to become a better, stronger person, and sometimes they still do the devil voice when they are in a joking mood. Actually, they can do any voice they want (man, woman, child, God, devil, British guy, Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Mexican, someone I know, etc.). It’s a skill they have that I’ve learned to appreciate, and I find incredibly entertaining.”

I see many voice hearers claim that their voices can imitate anyone's voice, people don't have this kind of an ability, therefore, chemical imbalance or even our brain cannot create these electrical activities in the auditory cortex to make us hear these voices.

4). “i have schizophrenia and i hear voices from time to time.. i find its easy on LSD to hear echoes of people’s voices you have heard recently.. like visual tracers – other senses leave the same brief sense memories.. hehe.. one time though the voices told me something i couldn’t have known – they informed me that the 9/11 attack was about to happen in new york. - How can this person even perceieve such a thing. Voices have told this to many voice hearers too.

@Dan. That's just the point. I don't always believe the doctors. As I was saying - if they say there is a chemical imbalance - then I want them to show me the evidence of that imbalance. As that is something that they would be able to show.
As to your explanations of voices - I can't see what you are seeing in those comments.
There is so much that we do not know about our brains and how they work. Scientists still don't know all there is to know about energy & matter & the universe. They are learning all the time.
Some people are very perceptive to energy changes around them. They are more attuned with how their bodies work.
We are constantly learning.

Re: Psychologist Toby Watson—Psychiatry is Misleading the Public About Mental Disorders

Well, I'm really not sure why people are not getting this.

What I think is voices understanding our thoughts, talking to us logically, this itself is enough to understand that the source or the cause of these voices must be intelligent. If we think our mind causes this, it shouldn't be hard for anyone to understand that within hundred or 200 years of time, it's impossible for our mind to gain all these abnormal capabilities or attributes in a natural way.

Ex: Sometimes, voices guide people to get from point A to B and taking this, (After 17th century)

1). This is an abnormal ability we suddenly gained.
2). Now, voices stimulating our auditory cortex to let us know what the mind understood.
3). Voices now talking to us in a third person's perspective.
4). Voices talking 24x7. (in between 8th to 16th only random voices)

It's impossible to gain these 4 different attributes/abilities/qualities all at once or within a hundred to 200 years of time. Following are further abnormal attributes that the voices are gaining.

Apart from these:

5). Voices start imitating other people's voices.
6). Voices could predict future.
7). Voices can talk languages that the person never learnt.

I think this is more than enough for an intelligent person to understand what these voices are. It would have taken ages to show something like this or voices to reflect all these different abnormal attributes/qualities in voices if the voices were natural.

Therefore, I really don't understand why people are not seeing shis. If anyone still has any doubts, they could start understanding the reason behind thought broadcast delusion too.

Let me write an example similar to what I wrote earlier:

Assume you and myself was inside a London cafe, I don't know you but you are a person sitting in front of me having a discussion with a friend of yours. I'm also sitting near to your table having a discussion with a friend of mine. Now at this very moment I was thinking of going to china to buy something and was thinking of my plan, suddenly you also start talking about China to your friend. You could also say something like this to the friend sitting next to you " or do you know that it's stupid to go to China to buy computer items, you could try Singapore instead" and then start a discussion with your friend about it.

People who experience thought broadcast phenomena will face things similar to this sometimes 10 , 15 times a day even. This is the only reason for this delusion. That no one knows so far. If someone wants to understand this, the simplest thing that person should do is to ask the victim what thought he/she was having or his actions/work at a particular time and the things said by the third person or their actions/gestures etc which making them to make this claim. The researcher should be able to understand that people who complain this, facing these cases in an abnormal fashion, which goes beyond any coincident.

Sometimes, people claim that their house is being bugged or their car is being bugged, people listening to their conversations or spying, it's the same reason. They believe these, cause, the third parties or other people start talking about things that they are not supposed to know without spying. These conversations a person might have had while in their houses or even inside their private vehicles, strangely others are talking just like they knew everything what happened but the truth is these words are coming to these peole out of the blue making the victim to believe that their house is being bugged or others are spying.

People around these victims, their family members, friends never understand why they make such claims, so they start thinking that him/her is having a mental issue. Which is not the case!!

Again, I could tell you all, I'm not saying this with a slightest doubt, millions and millions of people are being tortured with this technology. Hope people will wake up soon and understand this!

Re: Psychologist Toby Watson—Psychiatry is Misleading the Public About Mental Disorders

@Dan. There are many things in this world we still don't fully understand. Energy. Souls. Etc. Science still has a lot of work to do.
My concern with hearing voices - is if what they are telling you is 'harmful' or affects your life in a negative way - eg: losing friends/family/work.
When anything going on in our world starts affecting our ability to live well - that's when I think it's time to reach out for help.

Re: Psychologist Toby Watson—Psychiatry is Misleading the Public About Mental Disorders

@Dan. We all live in our own reality. Some people choose not to know what's going on in the world of politics or big business.
Some people are content talking about the footy scores or the latest celebrity - & are not interested in world affairs or global warming etc.
That's the world they are comfortable in.
So why is it so important for people to understand your reality and the way you perceive these voices?

Re: Psychologist Toby Watson—Psychiatry is Misleading the Public About Mental Disorders

@utopia Actually this is not about my reality and this topic is not something like other peoples likes/dislikes, this effects the entire society as in general. I'm not a voice hearer or neither a person with a induced delusion (I said induced cause these actually induced delusions to people), all i'm trying to do is to let people understand their own experience. If there are people out there who could volunteer and carry out some good researchers to undersand this, that would be great to see! Any of you, your friends, family members could become targeted by this at anytime, therefore, no one should neglect it just like other things.

When voice hearing was not there 24x7 prior to 17th century and then these abilities, attibutes, qualities of voicesis are more than enough to understand what voices are, that's all I can say!

Re: Psychologist Toby Watson—Psychiatry is Misleading the Public About Mental Disorders

@Dan I've read parts of this thread Are you suggesting technology is inducing thwarted states in people's minds?

I think the human brain is incredibly complex. There is a lot we will never know.
I think for a big part our experiences shape our realities. From the second we are conceived we become thinking, feeling beings perceptive to the world before us.
I'm only jumping in here, not having read full presentation of information given. 😊

Re: Psychologist Toby Watson—Psychiatry is Misleading the Public About Mental Disorders

Hi @Dan, how are you today? I'm curious about your claim that auditory hallucinations were not heard prior to the 17th century. Do you have a source or an article about this? Thanks Dan.

Re: Psychologist Toby Watson—Psychiatry is Misleading the Public About Mental Disorders

@Former-Member Thanks for your comments. Indeed it's incredibly complex, if we try to think about how the brain works in that deep way. We could also say, though we use computers every day, we don't understand how computers works either at the deepest level. We could talk about physical substance that computers are built up, atoms, electrons, protons, quacks etc.. but what quacks made up of? if we find that what those particles made up of? how it behaves? We could also ask ourselves do we really know how reality works ? But still we do so many things from the knowledge we have gained so far.

Therefore, the understanding that we have about human capabilities, how we learn things regardless of the country you born, what we know about our brain so far, technology aspect etc.. are enough to make a logical judgement about these voices and these weird psychological illnesses.

@Dothemo I'm doing fine, thanks and hope you are doing fine too! Answering to your question, I'll first ask a counter question for this, if you ask me to show evidence of people going in air planes in the 16th century, I won't be able to give you evidence for that cause it wasn't there. Since people didn't have that experience, people didn't talk about it, so there' are no evidence to show such an experience. Same way, I'm saying thought broadcast delusions wasn't there prior to 17th century, if you could find evidence of people experiencing that, I would have to ask that from anyone here to show evidence. I did my research not even I could find such evidence, but what I found was famous delusions like glass delusion. I could copy a link about this delusion,

http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-32625632

Just like this if people really did experience thought broadcast or voices talking to them 24x7, then these cases would have been well recorded.

I like to ask this question from both of you or anyone here, will deaf people have thought broadcast delusion?

Another example to show the capabilities of these voices: Following is a post made by a voice hearer in a forum,

"Oh… and they can also sense when i am about to get an SMS on my phone…. they try and claim responsibility for making the person send it

"I have been hearing the voice since the last 6 years, and the voice tells me exactly what will happen in the future in different parts of the world, and it also tells me what my colleagues are up to.”
