DogMan's Journal

DogMan's Journal

I seems that weekend coffee threads are a thing of the past. Which were my main space to share about myself

I thought I'd start my own thread. My username is a reference to the AFL team. I don't have a pet dog. I love dogs, but live in a small unit with 2 cockatiels (Collectively known as "The Chook Mans")

I've been in the mental health care system since 2003. At that time, I really hadn't seen any doctor for 12 years. The family who adopted me in my adolescence never once took me to a doctor

2003, during my honours year in a Fine Arts degree, I presented at uni health services in a mess. I said that I was embarrassed to be there, I requested a female doctor. So I think they assumed I had issues with my junk. And she quite taken aback when I mentioned psychotic symptoms

I was referred to CATT. Lots of it was done by phone. I had an in person appointment with the CMHT. The psychiatrist there said she suspected Schizophrenia. We negotiated no hospital as long as I gained weight prior to next appointment (I had some funny ideas about food and farming)

The antipsychotics made me very hungry. So that was rather easy

I did manage to graduate. My 4th year marks weren't great. Then I sort of accidentally met someone who knew someone looking for casual staff in childcare. So I applied and worked in childcare. Progressing up through ful time permanent staff

I moved a lot in Canberra, but did okay for years

2009 I had a big relapse. I took 6 weeks off work. I did have that much leave accrued. Since I rarely took leave. But when I returned, the dynamic changed and I was on the outer. My job became untenable

I moved to regional victoria and enrolled in a Master of IT (A conversion masters. So similar to undergrad but shorter. Which is possible if you have a degree in another discipline)

Mid way through, my housemate left chips cooking on the stove and accidentally burned my house down

So I took an early exit point of a Postgraduate Certificate. I contacted my mum, who I had had very little to do with since I was adopted in the early 90s (It's a long story)

I briefly stayed with mum by the beach

My sister got divorced around the same time. So I found somewhere to live with my sister in Melbourne. It didn't last long, the landlord developed the property into apartments

A period of couch surfing and homelessness followed

My (bio) mum's health had deteriorated and doctors recommended she didn't live alone. We moved into Social Housing together. We moved here in 2012, mum died in 2024, which was apparently her record for staying in one place. I'm still in the same unit and it's my record too

Lockdown broke me. I've seen various outpatient services. And professionals have played "Musical Chairs" with my diagnosis specifics. They all agree on Schizophrenia and Seasonal Affective Disorder. But other additions include OCD, PTSD, OSDD, ASD and others

I've been with my current psychologist since 2022. Which is a record for me. I've had longer dealings with psychiatrists, but not psychologists. I don't currently have a psychiatrist. But my GP formerly worked in psychiatry in the UK

My Psychologist is trying to get me into a psychiatrist. They keep deeming me "Outside their scope". I'm currently being referred to the local CFMHS Forensic Service. The "Harm OCD" is currently being viewed as actually potentially dangerous

I do a monthly zoom peer group for voice hearers. I think next Monday is our next meeting

My team want me to apply for the NDIS. They actually signed me up without my consent in 2018. I was grandfathered onto the scheme from it's predecessors. I opted out straight away

So that's a bit about me

@fluttershy1 @taali @cuddlebear @chasingsunsets @missgremlin @dimity @appleblossum @nala2022 @bow @captain24 @jynx @smilinggecko

I don't really know who to tag. I've generally aimed for active people who are generally nice to me

@dimity @MissGremlin @Appleblossom @Chasingsunsets

I managed to bring my psychologist appointment forward from 8th October to 30th September, which is this Wednesday

I believe her Secondary Consultation with the Community Forensic Mental Health Service is on the 6th. And hopefully they can brainstorm some more services

I live in Victoria. I've emailed all of my local candidates about a range of issues, including Foundational Supports (State based NDIS Lite, as announced in the last state budget) Violence reduction and risk reduction. And none of them have been very helpful

My GP ran very late to an appointment this week. Which made me feel like a burden. The front desk were making phone calls cancelling his appointments

Re: DogMan's Journal

@DogMan79 I'm glad you've been able to bring your appointment forward.

I'm sorry that you haven't found any of the services helpful for you, it sounds very frustrating.

I can understand feeling like a burden especially when you're booked in at a certain time. Unfortunately doctors I've found can often run very late, it only takes one person to go over there time or to be late and then it throws the whole day out.

I hope you're able to get the support you need and deserve soon ❤️

Re: DogMan's Journal

@DogMan79 Good luck with your earlier appointment this week. Do you have a good relationship with her? Have you seen her for a while.

It can be expensive. I certainly spent a lot of money in the past. I also can feel like a terrible burden. Not fun.

Having more in the team can be good or just more intrusion. I am not sure. Depends on all the individuals and how they work together.

Also what you have freedom to choose and what is imposed.

One would hope they would be able to help open or carve a path for you.

I have found it difficult to get services to work for my son. I am gonna say a total balls up. I have struggled to get them to work for me, but had much more success, when it was just about me. But still some doozie .... not good stories ... still, I am grateful for what I have that is decent. Doesnt have to be purrrfect.

Take care

Re: DogMan's Journal

Well done on your advocacy @DogMan79 . I have a rello, a young lad who might be shunted into foundational supports if not cut off entirely.

Last year I got some traction on a different issue by jointly emailing my State and Federal MPs pointing out when Medicare and care through private insurance fail mental health needs, the State hospital system picks up the pieces. The same could be said of NDIS and My Aged Care re physical disability and general medical - if people fall through the cracks bed blockage and ramping follow.

Re: DogMan's Journal

Hi @DogMan79 I've had a call from my mp's team so I decided to start reaching out to other candidates as well. Is there anything in particular you'd suggest raising? One thing is there's no walk-in mh clinics for miles.

Re: DogMan's Journal

Hi @Dimity Foundational Supports, which will be state based NDIS Lite for the people booted off of NDIS will be a state government issue, with strong federal component

Included in that will be therapy through the local PHN and walk in clinics which you just mentioned. Which are currently capped at 10 sessions per person per year. But may (Depending on who's elected and their policy) be expanded under foundational supports to more ongoing care

I'm assuming you are in Victoria if your MPs are cold calling at the moment?

@Appleblossom @MissGremlin @Dimity @Fluttershy1

I had my GP and depot injection today

Today completed the cross titration of the "bit of everything" med

It was originally prescribed for focal seizures. Discussions with my treating team recently suggest that they all think the "Seizures" are dissociation and not seizures

I asked if i could stop the wonder med. And was told it covers mood, migraines etc. But I can swap it for another

Today completed that process

Re: DogMan's Journal

Hi @DogMan79 yes I'm in Vic and watching a slowmoving carcrash due to culminate on Nov 28. I'd only heard of foundational supports in relation to kids under 9 diagnosed ASD.

From what you say it sounds like shifting the funding expectation from federal to state for some adults too. Slashing NDIS community access and social support has had me worried for people and it sounds as though some group homes are targeted too... in the US there are fears of a new wave of institutionalisation.

Anyway, if there's anything specific you're lobbying for I'd be interested. The PHN and local walk-in mh clinics perhaps aren't well known except to people graduating from the public system. They're hard to find online and almost impossible to crack into if you're an informal carer concerned for someone.

Fingers crossed your new med regime suits @DogMan79
