Risk to reputation

Risk to reputation

Community mental health admit they don’t get tongue in cheek because they take everything seriously but what happens if you use humour and send emails to your friends and include them? You get sectioned, twice. It happened to me.

Emails are tricky because unless you visually meet the person and ask what you mean, you assume they are a risk to their reputation and take immediate action which includes police.

Can one be more careful when looking on the bright side of life then get hospitalised because people with power can’t take a joke?

Re: Risk to reputation

I guess they take everything seriously cause heaven forbid someone uses humor but was absolutely serious and they end their life. Could you imagine the trouble some poor person would be in?? The guilt? Could ruin someone. @Sequester

Re: Risk to reputation

My local CMHT doesn't accept emails

I cheated and worked out they use common format of addresses

They said they had people email outside hours and not make it through the night. So they only accept phone contact

Re: Risk to reputation

Hi Dog Man

When I legitimately told them by email I couldn’t attend because of Covid they ignored me.

Also when I took them to NCAT they did not respond either.

But to be sarcastic in my humour style deserves a SWOT team response that says it all really.

Thanks for sharing.

Re: Risk to reputation

Sorry I don’t understand where you are getting at. That’s my point. You can’t ascertain what a person is getting at unless you directly ask them. As in, was that sarcasm? Or eye ball them ideally. But god forbid they are gone for the day at 4pm so that’s where the police step in. Guilty of using humour by sending emails to myself.

Re: Risk to reputation

Are you saying that it is my responsibility to refrain from expressing myself because in the community people are reaching out to them who are suicidal?

While I realise the point you made, I was not trying to be the boy who cried wilf. I was sending emails to myself but included them which led to being triaged for 42 hours.

i am sure you are aware that people do tragically die by the way you say in hospital. I was grieving because my neighbour died this way a year before. I am unable to access the review by the local health district but I monitor the coronial inquests.

i was grieving not suicidal. Never have been. To interpret emails in this way needs a rethink in my opinion.

Is it ok to be triaged for 42 hours for going through grief. This is my point. I wanted to prompt a discussion around this.

I don’t know the point of your comment but as someone who has been impacted I will give you the benefit of the doubt and respect your point of view.

A psychiatrist let that person out on day leave when the tragedy happened. I guess they have to live with that decision.

Re: Risk to reputation

Could you imagine they put me in the very same hospital where the original tragedy occurred on the one year anniversary? True story.

Re: Risk to reputation

Hey @Sequester, thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences with the community!

Sounds like you have been through quite a bit and have a lot of experience with community mental health services. I just thought I chime in here and add that organisations have a duty of care towards you which includes what you say in any communication or engagement with them. So, any organisation is likely to take everything you say seriously as it is their legal and ethical responsibility. I encourage you to Google it and this may answer your own question?

Hope this helps the discussion in the thread!

Take care

Re: Risk to reputation

Hearing you @Sequester about some of the heavy handedness in the system. I dont accept "fear of risk" as a fair and therapuetic excuse for silencing, ignoring or restraining, vulnerable people. I am one ... bitten on the bum ... by their refusal to apologise for a few premature deaths in my family ... and over zealousness in physical and chemical restraint on family members ...without..proper treatment protocols ... ... I do have a substantial understanding of the difference of ... genuine duty of care.... and limitation of legal liability.

I have had a few conversations about humour with different people lately. These are changing and difficult times, and capacity to comprehend humans and comedians has seemed to suffer, no matter the technical upgrades.

They say ... laughter is a bloomin' decent medicine.... wishing you the best in a Mad World.

Re: Risk to reputation

@Appleblossom your positivity and support brought me back because I know I am not the only one to feel this way. I literally almost never wanted to return to this website because I was not getting that nuance from the responses and quite frankly I was left misunderstood and deflated. But I know to believe in myself. So welcome back to the world of connecting and finding hope amongst the confusing journey.

What are your thoughts about a support group I intend to set up called "Natural Prescriptions" which involves being in nature, doing art and receiving social prescriptions? It's evidence based so it's not quack, which is what I have been described previously by one psychiatrist for having an interest in natural therapies as if they're illegal and anarchistic. Well maybe the system reeks of harm when people deserve to be out of hospitals unless absolutely necessary and in the community?

I don't care about not being understood by anyone. That's an unrealistic notion. I do care that I am in this wonderful community of resilient humans and thanks for your words. It made my day!
