Any Advice for Functioning

Any Advice for Functioning

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone on here has advice for how to do the things you know you need to when everything feels too hard and pointless? My psych has been encouraging me to eat better, exercise, get to sleep earlier, and I know I need to, but in the moment I can’t seem to make myself.

A few years ago I pulled back to only doing the bare minimum in the hopes it would help me recover from what I thought was neurodivergence-related burnout. I’m still struggling even to do the bare minimum though and the list of things I’m behind on keeps growing. It’s really hard to see a way through but I don’t want to let the people who’ve supported me down.

Would welcome hearing anyone’s experience of what has helped them, even a little bit.

Came across this new video today. Leaving it here along with a video from How to ADHD in case they are useful to anyone.

I liked that she explained how shifting states isn’t always deep breathing but might involve physical movement or sensory input. I’m going to keep trying to learn how to shift states and how to identify what might make the task feel even slightly more manageable, but it’s terrifying when it feels like nothing is working, and I can really relate to just wanting to give up. So, if you’re reading this and are also feeling that way, you aren’t alone, it makes sense that you’d feel scared or discouraged if the things you’re trying aren’t working, and that’s a lot to be dealing with. 💛

For me, starting with something small like checking my emails or feeding my lizard can be enough to get me going. Other days I have to get my boyfriend to call me and walk me through every step of even getting out of bed. But the first step is asking for help! So you're already on the move!

Proud of you, @Wintersweet

Re: Any Advice for Functioning

Hey @Wintersweet, nice to e meet you 😊. I hear functioning for you is difficult and really relate to that space. I see you had some thoughts if it was related to your neurodivergence burnout which is a really interesting thought and got me thinking. We aren’t able to talk about meds here but I know I have tried meds and the ones specifically for adhd actually made me less productive. Which is very very counter productive and from all my reading- not really working as they should and that really surprised me. Just a thought if you were on something and if you felt this connection? If not I also still get the burnout or wanting a better level of functioning. I nap most days and sometimes it helps sometimes it doesn’t. A good coffee also can help me function sometimes or a reward at the end of my errands or chores ☺️. Take care, you are not alone here, I get it

@wateravoidant

Thanks for your kind response. I’m glad you’ve got someone who can support you like that on the harder days. Lizards are so cool, what type do you have? What’s their name?

Nice to meet you too. I do have ADHD meds that I take. I don’t know if they help but I don’t think they make jt worse. My psychiatrist suggested increasing the dose, but when I tried that I seemed to get hyperfocussed on unproductive distractions. I’m not as deep in burnout as I have been in the past, but am really struggling to find ways to make myself take care of my health and my space.
