Any Advice for Functioning

Any Advice for Functioning

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone on here has advice for how to do the things you know you need to when everything feels too hard and pointless? My psych has been encouraging me to eat better, exercise, get to sleep earlier, and I know I need to, but in the moment I can’t seem to make myself.

A few years ago I pulled back to only doing the bare minimum in the hopes it would help me recover from what I thought was neurodivergence-related burnout. I’m still struggling even to do the bare minimum though and the list of things I’m behind on keeps growing. It’s really hard to see a way through but I don’t want to let the people who’ve supported me down.

Would welcome hearing anyone’s experience of what has helped them, even a little bit.

Hi @Wintersweet i have stacks of things put off/havent followed through

Picking small things can help. I do do big things, just not every I think I should well or want to do. Make lists? Break big thing into smaller pieces

Hi @TAB

Thanks for your reply. Have you found anything that helps when even making a list or trying to do the smallest possible step makes you shut down even more?

Also, thank you for your honesty about also struggling sometimes. I really appreciate it.

@Wintersweet had to think.

yeah believe in list/plan

All you are doing then is whatever is on that page. I still try and put things off and leave things to last minute and have to say I want X . It will be a lot harder if I don't do step A tomorrow.

So I do step A. It's process by stealth 😅

Ah, yeah. I think my secondary difficulty is that it all feels pointless. Sometimes it’s that I can’t make myself believe it will make a meaningful difference if I do it. Sometimes it’s that I can’t make myself believe I’m capable of doing it because even the smallest step feels overwhelming and I shut down.

Lists/small steps are good though if trying to work out what needs to be done/how to start.

That's a big trap and can become new norm re negative thoughts @Wintersweet Like when I get housebound. Comfortable yest positive not really. Plus worked out I get sick if hang around indoors enough sitting around and that's debilitating too. Eg had skin infection last yr got hospitalised, now pneumonia/bad lung infection. No fresh air or walks. Not enough movement 😀

Re: Any Advice for Functioning

Hi @wintersweet and @TAB

Lists, lists, lists....

I write them, and lose them, or get myself into a right start by not working through them.

What a horrible feeling.

I've now started putting only 2 things on mine. I can forgive myself if I accomplish 1 of them be it small or large..eg today I had check letter box which is actually 2 because it means that I have to get out of PJs.

AND also make bed. Well I managed to make the bed by pulling up the doona (didn't change linen though) that can wait the world won't stop turning coz it's not done. Now I've thrown that list out.

Feels good!!!

I hope you can get some comfort knowing that you can put things off for another day when you can check one, two OR none of them off. And then chuck it out!!!!

@Taali

Go gently on yourselves ✨️

@TAB

I remember when I had a bad lung infection. It was awful. I hope you’re able to recover and find the right balance between rest and doing things that will help.

@Taali

Thank you for empathising. And well done for what you were able to do today! Thank you for sharing a different way of looking at lists and a healthier way of responding when they aren’t completed.

You're welcome @Wintersweet

Let me know how it goes for you.

Might take a while, but worth a try.
