Avoiding Forum Land addiction

Avoiding Forum Land addiction

Hi all, I am curious to know if I am the only person around here who has a propensity to get hooked on internet forums, social media sites etc. I have decided to instigate some rules for myself around how much time I spend here in Forum Land because I know how easily I can get hooked on such sites. It happened to me when I was at uni and spending a lot of time on the forums there - thus I am nipping it in the bud this time around.

I recognise that because I am very socially isolated, I get a real buzz (or more technically, a dopamine hit in my brain) each time I get a response or "like" from anyone and this motivates me to engage again in order to get another hit. I know there is nothing in the world wrong with gaining enjoyment from the social interaction that the forums provide...but there is great wisdom in that saying, "all things in moderation."

The other issue that I'm seeing in myself is that I'm hanging around here in Forum Land far too close to my bedtime. I realise that I need some non-screen time before bed in order to get a better night's sleep. Otherwise, I find myself going to bed still buzzing from all the interesting conversations I've had here in Forum Land.

So...this is my plan. I am going to give myself a Forum Land curfew of 9pm, except on Friday nights (because Friday Feast is so super fun). I think I will just work on that goal for now...and then work on reducing how often I jump on the forum during the day once I'm travelling ok with that first goal.

Alright, now that I've put this out there for the entire world to read, I would be interested to hear if anyone else has found themselves getting hooked on the forums???

Re: Avoiding Forum Land addiction

It's time for me to sign off for the night. My goal is to stay out of Forum Land for the whole weekend. I know I almost certainly won't achieve that goal, but hey, it doesn't hurt to aim big. @NikNik my tummy hurts...and I'm pretty sure it isn't from eating too much nutella. It frightens me how much faith people place in "experts"...as though if things aren't working, it could never possibly be the "expert's" fault. I kind-of want to talk out my big feeling, but I am sleepy. The feeling will have passed by morning won't it. Can you maybe just drop by here and say goodnight @NikNik? One day my feelings won't be so big, or so easily triggered. Well that's the plan anyway. Night.

While it's kind of great that you've set goals and are sticking to them @Phoenix_Rising, in a completely 'I'm only thinking of myself' way, I kind of miss seeing you around while you do. Hope your shell is proper stuck together this weekend and you're happily cruising around your own non-virtual ocean at the moment. That's all.

Hey everybody, look at me, I achieved my goal of staying off the forum all weekend. Hey @CheerBear, @Former-Member @Shaz51 @utopia @Former-Member @Former-Member @NikNik @CherryBomb and a bazillion other people, how super awesome am I. I feel very empowered because I know how addictive online forums can be and even though I think the SANE forums are a super cool resource, I know you can definitely have too much of a good thing. Yay for me. Oh and if you are trying to picture what I look like while I write this, I look pretty much like squirt does in this clip.

Re: Avoiding Forum Land addiction

hello @Phoenix_Rising

I agree with you wholeheartedly re transferring one need ie facebook connection to another need, sane forums.

I recognised that I was on here too often after a couple of months of joining. might be more not sure.

I did limit my attendance, perusing, responding times.

When I ended up in hospital even though I knew that I had isolated myself in my home for about a year, apart from family get togethers where I attended with mask, armour, smile, I had concerns that I was reaching out to the forum as opposed to help on offer.

Now back home, I am walking again thank goodness. I still havent been to the shops a huge part in isolating in past.

I have noticed that I have had to stop myself from logging in to check for replies as someone else mentioned.

I too am limiting my time to morning, lunch then that is it for the day.

Looking at computer screens, phone screens the lights and electronic matter that builds them is bad for our eyes, yes does affect our calming down pattern in our bodies also, over stimulating us.

I do understand though that everyone of us have different needs, some need night time contact, others morning contact.

I joined to find information re schizophrenia so am continuing searching re that subject as well as replying and checking in on friends whom I have made along the way.

all in all whatever works for us as individuals bearing in mind outcome is still helpful.

yes phoenix a check up every now and again is excellent advice.

oops I have written another essay again. am trying so hard to dot point, just not me. just read as far as you need to yawn. xx
