Avoiding Forum Land addiction

Avoiding Forum Land addiction

Hi all, I am curious to know if I am the only person around here who has a propensity to get hooked on internet forums, social media sites etc. I have decided to instigate some rules for myself around how much time I spend here in Forum Land because I know how easily I can get hooked on such sites. It happened to me when I was at uni and spending a lot of time on the forums there - thus I am nipping it in the bud this time around.

I recognise that because I am very socially isolated, I get a real buzz (or more technically, a dopamine hit in my brain) each time I get a response or "like" from anyone and this motivates me to engage again in order to get another hit. I know there is nothing in the world wrong with gaining enjoyment from the social interaction that the forums provide...but there is great wisdom in that saying, "all things in moderation."

The other issue that I'm seeing in myself is that I'm hanging around here in Forum Land far too close to my bedtime. I realise that I need some non-screen time before bed in order to get a better night's sleep. Otherwise, I find myself going to bed still buzzing from all the interesting conversations I've had here in Forum Land.

So...this is my plan. I am going to give myself a Forum Land curfew of 9pm, except on Friday nights (because Friday Feast is so super fun). I think I will just work on that goal for now...and then work on reducing how often I jump on the forum during the day once I'm travelling ok with that first goal.

Alright, now that I've put this out there for the entire world to read, I would be interested to hear if anyone else has found themselves getting hooked on the forums???

@NikNik, I'm pretty sure I don't over-estimate your wisdom. I'm just looking at your avatar...your head is strangely large in relation to your body. I'm sure that's because of all the wisdom it is filled with.

I figured out the idea of changing the email notifications pretty early on when I started drowning in emails (and it takes a lot of emails to drown a turtle!!!). It sounds like this was great advice for @Former-Member though. As well as doing what you suggested, I have also set the notifications so that I only get notified for "likes" and when someone tags me. I unchecked the box about getting notified if someone posts on a thread I have posted on.

I really like the fact that the little notification thingy appears on the computer screen now, as well as on the mobile. I find that helpful.

I'm very proud of myself for having stayed off here until lunchtime as planned. Now I am hanging out here while eating lunch - the only downside to that being that I think I'm getting vegemite all over my computer keyboard.

@BlueBay I definitely find setting specific goals helpful. It makes more sense to me to tell myself something specific like "stay off forum until lunchtime" rather than something more general such as "try not to check forum so often." That way I have a definite point at which I can celebrate having achieved my goal. Then I can reward myself and start on the next goal.

...and now I'm ready for my next super challenge of jumping off the forums until this evening. Hey @NikNik I think we need an "applause" button as well as a "like" button. I feel that I need a round of applause for achieving my goals. Hey @Zoe7, @Former-Member @utopia @Faith-and-Hope @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member (and everybody that I've just offended by leaving out) look at me, I'm super awesome...and modest...definitely modest.

Re: Avoiding Forum Land addiction

@Phoenix_Rising rofl! ya ya ya no doubt about you being super modest.. nup no doubts at all.... but yay fabulous and just SUPER that you have that ringing applause in your ears for your achievement. I... will not be achieving said super achievement... but I have managed to sweep and mop the kitchen floor, in addition to the dishes and wiping out the fridge... so I'm kinda super awesome-ish... nah.. I'm not.. but ok it's something not quite super 😄

Re: Avoiding Forum Land addiction

Hi @Phoenix_Rising @BlueBay and everyone else

I defintiely fit this category which is partly why I have now stopped myself from going on these forums and only occassionaly posting like now. I found that I was too involved with others, waiting on replies if I had issues and when I didnt I would get a bit upset thinking no one wants to talk to me. Of course that is not true and I know now that everyone has their responsibilities, jobs etc so I know now it wasnt personal. Whilst I have been off the forums I have found that this has helped me as well. I dont focus on my BPD issues so much and just keep trying to move forward, sometimes when I was in a rage at first it helped venting on here but then later I felt it made me reuminate more about those issues instead of learning to deal with the rage and feelings and let them pass. Dont get me wrong this forum is one of the best I have ever used but I also feel sometimes we need to stand on our own two feet when we feel strong enough. Taking a break from this has also shown me how strong I really am and that I can get through.

Take care all

Re: Avoiding Forum Land addiction

@Phoenix_Rising I an admin for a couple of different Facebook groups, so I tend to keep an eye on those from time to time during the day (just making sure everyone's playing by the rules). That's why I flit between websites. If I had my way, I'd be here more often that not.

Re: Avoiding Forum Land addiction

I don't know if this is a help to anyone, but when I was studying and facebook etc was a big distraction I would use this app called 'selfcontrol' where you could block a website for a certain period say an hour or 3.
But I think we are all on here cause we are seeking connection and understanding and maybe that's why we sometimes over use the forums cause we are needing that connection/understanding more at that point. Perhaps some self compassion would be useful? And I hate to say it, but building supports in our everyday life a bit more too?
I find it really hard, but that's one of my resolutions for the year to meet new people and expand my network. I've joined a few clubs and groups and I'm slowly getting to know new people and whilst it's been terrifyingly difficult, it's also been rewarding too.
