For when you are hanging in there.

For when you are hanging in there.

Hi All,

I was wondering what everyone does when they are not quite in crisis but not quite 100% as well.

What do you do to energise yourself? What keeps you plugging away?

Just thinking about what I should do...specially when I feel like I have really low energy but want to do something!

Hey @Anonymouse1000

I get what you mean, those in-between days can be really tricky. It’s tough when you’re not in crisis but not feeling fully “up” either. You’re not alone in feeling like that.

For me, things that help on days like that include:

  • Small, manageable tasks: even just a short walk, tidying one small area, or making a cup of tea. Little wins can help boost energy.
  • Gentle movement: stretching, yoga, or just dancing to a favorites song can lift your mood a bit.
  • Creative outlets: drawing, journaling, cooking, or listening to music I love.
  • Connecting with others: a quick message to a friend, or even sharing here in the forum, can make a difference.

If your energy starts to feel low or you’re struggling with thoughts that worry you, it’s always okay to reach out for extra support. Some helplines that are great for when you just need someone to talk to:

  • Lifeline: 13 11 14 (available 24/7)
  • Beyond Blue: 1300 22 4636

You’re doing the right thing by thinking about ways to take care of yourself and keep going. Even small steps count, and you don’t have to do it all at once.

Sending you encouragement. You’re not alone in this!

Re: For when you are hanging in there.

Hi @Anonymouse1000

I try and find small managable tasks that I can do. If I think of big tasks I get easily overwhelmed.

For example, one thing I do is jigsaw puzzles. Instead of telling myself I need to solve the whole puzzle, I just work on putting 10 pieces together at a time.

With reading I tell myself lets just read 5 pages and see how I go instead of telling myself I need to finish the whole book.

I try and do things that distract me from what is happening at that moment in time. I guess give my brain a break from all my mental health issues.

Especially with low energy, it can be really hard to start something. It can feel like such a big ordeal.

Baby steps!

Thanks @Snowie @Nala2022

Great tips...

I find it most difficult if I lose hope that I will eventually get better.

I like the small steps, thats going to help me a lot...

Re: For when you are hanging in there.

For me, sometimes I have to remind myself that all I really have is right now, even though that can be hard. I try to remember that there are moments when I do feel clearer, more energised, and more able to move forward.

Sometimes it feels like my fearful self has taken over, and a more grounded part of me is somewhere in the background trying to offer a bit of encouragement or grace. I ask myself what I need in that moment. Do I need to journal? Get some chocolate? Go for a walk? Stay in bed? Take a few things off my plate? What pressure can I let go of right now?

I also really struggle with the shame of doing “nothing”, or feeling like I am falling behind and dumping more on my future self. Sometimes talking myself through it helps, but not always, especially if my energy is really low or I am feeling emotionally all over the place.

@WellnessLens really appreciate what you've shared 😊 I think you've hit the nail on the head with how helpful it is to build a habit of noticing and embodying your gratitude 💜

Also just a little tip, if you want other members to be notified that you've responded, you can tag them using the @ symbol, then selecting (or typing if they aren't in the drop down menu) their username so it shows up in blue, like this: @Anonymouse1000

@WellnessLens

Thank you for your message!

Great advice! Gratitude is something I really have to work at cultivating... most of the time I'm anxious or dhysthymic I find it hard to escape the funk...but also I find it odd that most people dont have to fight depression so often. I guess we are just lucky?
