Bipolar brain fog

Bipolar brain fog

I had my first full blown manic episode towards the end of last year and am currently feeling very depressed. Along with my depression I’m having poor sleep and terrible brain fog. Has anyone else experienced this and made a full recovery?

Hello @twopoles1 and welcome. It sounds as though you're newly diagnosed which takes adjusting. Then there's new meds and all.

For me yes I experience that. I think there's two components. One is that it's part of the cycle. The other is that antipsychotics (if that's one of your meds) can have an impact too so many psychiatrists try to "titrate" the dose down to a low but still effective amount for maintenance, while being open to revising it upwards when needed.

Something to be aware of is many psychiatrists try to avoid prescribing antidepressants to people with bipolar as they can tip you into mania. But my psychiatrist has suggested there's a mood stabiliser that might help.

Selfcare and maintaining connections is very important during a depressive phase. Some people call it having a toolbox of coping skills. There are forum threads to help with that.

Enjoy your Friday... any plans?

Oh I’m on a rapid cycling tumbling the depression has hit me hard right now, I miss the vibrant fun of my recent mania so badly but that was also uncomfortable towards the end

Hello @Kindcrystal sorry to hear, I hope the depression lifts soon and you can ride it out. Do you have professional supports? I hope you do too @twopoles1 .

My mood is flat at present, but my mood/activity tracker says it's better than it was. I find the tracker really helpful.

Yes I do have professional support. The can’t get myself off the bathroom floor part is sometimes the hardest. I switched to try and watch TV but it’s hard to concentrate too. I did just make myself some eggs which is a positive
