Welcome and getting started

ADHD ASD? Meltdowns Suicidal Ideation

ADHD ASD? Meltdowns Suicidal Ideation

Where to start?

Me, 52 years old male. Physical, I have scoliosis 28° curvature, but it goes one way the 28° back the other way the very next vertebrae. So my back looks fairly normal, but is always in pain.

My head. 2 years ago I was diagnosed with ADHD retrospective. I am being assessed for ASD in July. I have 2 daughters. One is 15 and she is with me 50/50. The other is 16 and with me full time.

Man this is hard... If I write everything that is goong on and has gone it this would be a hard cover book so in notes.

TW: Sexual Assault

Content/trigger warning

16yo Daughter. Sexually assaulted by grandfather on mother's side. Abuse by her mother for telling the school and police. Bullied at school for it. Missed most of that year. Last year went to a different school sand BS but not as bad. This year at Busy School. Had a boyfriend 6 months ago that said he was 16 turning 17. Turned up to be 19 and we needed court orders to stop the threat but he is still spreading rumours etc. Had other crappy boyfriends. Will not get mental health help, but in some ways I don't blame her what she got was shockingly bad. Was smoking pot but that's stopped. Many other drama's. The lates was involved in organizing an illegal Bush Doof that put me in a legal situation that if anyone was hurt I could have been sue (I've seen a lawyer about it) so now I have to do a police report to protect our house. Is extremely demanding and steals all my time. Things like has a sleepover at a friend's and messages me asking me to message her upset and saying she has to come home... Sorry this is to taxing there is so much more...

  • Everytime she messages, calls or I have to pick her up from school, I have anxiety attacks. I know there is going to be another drama and usually Im right. I love both my kids to death, but I seriously don't want her anymore as she never helps me.

When it came out just before Christmas that I was going to take my life all she cared about was herself.
She knows I'm struggling now but just don't do anything I ask to help me. My life was work, but Im off now. Running around after my kids and spending all my money on them. There became nothing that gives me joy anymore. Even now there is very little that makes me smile or happy. My stress level is through the roof and I hear a constant ringing in my ears. My ADHD meds help a lot, they actually help keep negative thoughts out of my head.

Now me OMG where to start.

I've been a single father for 14 years. In that time I've been the one who took my girls to doctors, swimming lessons, paid got 12 years of dance classes. My oldest has been to the nations coming 3rd and both are now student dance teachers. But the last 5 years of dance as cost about $5,000 a year and I earn about $38,000 per year. In the last 4 years for me ADHD has been getting worse. I have so many jobs to do around the house it's not funny.. Then when I get ine thing done one or two more jobs come along. A few weeks ago a friend that works in mental health but lives 1400kms away come and helped me for 10 days. But 2 days after she left I felt bogged down again. He has her own problem with older children, her company, client etc so cannot get until maybe May, she is hoping to get back before, but most likely wont. Oh I am the only child and have to support my parent and mum is getting dementia.

Anyway, my biggest problem out of all that is my anxiety around my daughter and meltdown when things don't go to plan. Mostly because she stuffs me around and doesn't help out when she says that she will. It puts me into a downward spiral and I start thinking of killing myself again.

Not so much like last year when I has so so close to doing it.

But I get so close to seeing it as the only viable option.

I like in FNQ and searched askizzy fir support etc and there is nothing here at all. My daughter was referred to Anglicare but I rang up weeks ago but I'm still waiting to hear back from them. I'm not sure if they will be able to help with my daughter, but I was hoping at least I could get a break.

I seriously don't know what to do. A lot of the time on the way to pick her up from school, when she's started pressuring me through the day, I feel like calling up the school and telling them I'm not picking her up and she's not welcome at our home. Then telling them to just call CPS and let them deal with her 😞

I know I'm a good father and been good to the community. I ran a single parents social group. I have extra tents for camping trips. A few people got married. I stopped 2 suicides. I'm very active in the dance school building props and running a food stall at an annual comp. But I can't cope.

Hi there @FKWTCM ,

Welcome to the forums. You certainly have a full full plate!

I want to acknowledge your dedication and care towards your girls. As hard as it sounds, I wonder if this is a rough teenage patch they are going through?

I'm so sorry to hear that things are so stressful for you right now. Your feelings a valid. I'm not sure I could be as committed as you. I can see you are a wonderful careing father and you want the best for them, but it's not easy.

Have you sat down with your daughther to let her know the impact she is having on you? I know you said she can be selfish, but she sounds pretty teenagerish at this time. At school, do they call you up to pick her up or does she call you directly?

I wonder if the school has special mental health supports she can be linked into? You certainly can't do this on your own. I hear it sometimes comes to the point where you just want to say, "Take her". This is a cry for help.

I hope you hear from social services soon and you get the help you deserve.

What are things that you enjoy doing or would like to get back into?

@FKWTCM You certainly do have a LOT on your plate, and I’m really glad for @tyme ’s reply which has already said a number of things I would have said so i won’t repeat it lol.

I wonder whether your daughters would have the capacity to try to fundraise for their expensive hobbies like the dancing?

It could be a really good way for them to build some independence skills too to do so!

It sounds like your daughter probably has a lot of mental health problems herself and may be struggling (e.g. needing you to pick her up, asking you to give her a reason to tell her friend she needs to leave the sleepover, seeking unhealthy relationships, etc). As you note, if she won’t seek a good MH support that is really hard on all of your because it really does impact you too.

I know I feel sad for how much money my mother has had to spend on my mental health and support me in some aspects of daily living since I was pre-teen. 😓. I guess at least my mum know I am aware of this and appreciative and don’t take it for granted? And as an adult and now that I have capacity to, I try to help her socially too and showing care. (I’m not physically able to help much.)

I wonder if the Community/Family services can offer some extra support for you in some way with your struggling with the children? Perhaps even if it is a weekend respite-relief or something?? I don’t know what they can offer, but for your sake I hope there is something - because it sounds like you are not coping, and that is dangerous for both you and you family.

It is definitely part teen. But she's had a massive amount of trauma in her life starting at 3 years old. Their mother and I used to do change over at either her place or mine. For 6 months or so their mother kept dropping them to my place. My older daughter said a few strange things to me, one being at mummy's place we don't walk on the bags. It was more the way she said it that felt wrong. So the next change over I drove to the mothers place. The whole house was full of garbage. There was a walking path to the mother's bedroom and my girls older siblings shared room. There were open tuna tins on an ironing board, it was full on. CPS saw it as an extreme case. There have been other things since then too. But she wont talk to anyone about it.

Usually she would call or message me from school. A lot of the time crying in the toilet.

The new school, Busy School seems great. They have 4 counselors there, career pathways people, they even do TAFE courses through the school.

I've joined a local Gem Club and have started Cabochon and a little bit of silver work. I'm really enjoying Cabochon, I think because I was fascinated with my fathers bench grinder when I was little, because he wouldn't let me touch it 😁 Now whenever I need to use my grinder I've got a big smile. (A cabochon machine is like a big bench grinder). I can usually go to the club on Tuesdays after I drop her to school. I also try to go on Saturdays. It takes my mind off the world because you need to concentrate on what you are doing and forget the world. I only started it this year.

Thank you for your support.

I cannot see my giros raising money, it would just be more work for me.

As for mental health support for her. I'm hoping with Anglicare we can get some. They can also help with driving lessons. I'm not sure how it works yet, but I'm hoping that could be a soft start to building a rapport and lead to counseling. I might try calling them again on Monday.

Thank you for helping

Re: ADHD ASD? Meltdowns Suicidal Ideation

It sounds harsh... but.. do you have to answer her phone when she is at school @FKWTCM ?

I know this because I've worked in the wellbeing team at school, and if there IS really an issue, then they school will call.

However, if she is used to calling you and you pick her up, then it may be teaching her to rely on that? Do you think so?

Seeing they have counsellors, etc at school, perhaps they can work with her so that she finds strategies to help her self-regulate?

P.S., Mobile phones are banned in schools here, so they wouldn't be able to call anyway.

Re: ADHD ASD? Meltdowns Suicidal Ideation

The school that she is in now it a lot better. The students can have music on their phones via Bluetooth, but the phone is locked in a box for classes. So they can have music playing but not use the phone. She's not called from school yet and she's been there 2 weeks now. Oh with the exception of the TAFE course finishing early.
Thank you
