Excersise and meds
Less than a week ago I began my journey onto Anti-depressants again, after years, to support my recovery process alongside therapy for OCD. I was extremely upset about 'having' to take it, but my obsessions had a control on me and now I'm so glad I did. Healing is not a linear process, and I'm faced with my own internalised stigma around medication and mental health. However, I am reminded by the fact that mental illnesses are illnesses and should be treated as such.
One thing that has been helping me a lot is exercise. Before medication, I was an avid gym-goer for approximately 6 months until I fell into a depression around christmas. My focus was on weight lifting and some cardio, the sauna at the end of the session made me feel so relaxed and rejuvenated.
I was hesitant to go back to the gym after starting my medication again due to the list of side effects, but I was determined. I've been back a few times now and I noticed instantly that I was able to stretch deeper and feel a sense of relaxation! Before, my muscles were so tight as I was tense all the time, full of anxiety and overwhelm. Now, It feels like my body is taking a 'breather'.
I limit my sauna use to 10 minutes now due to overheating on medications, and drink more water to counteract the hyper-hidrosis. In my mind, I thought I couldn't do the things I loved anymore when I started taking medication again. I am so happy that isn't the case, and in fact meds have made it easier for me in all aspects to enjoy one of the things I love to do again. On a side note, my sleeping pattern is improving as I wake up at 7am to take my medication and my body just wakes up somewhat easily when it's time... Normally I would sleep into mid day, even if I tried really hard to wake up.
Just wanted to share my update on my recovery journey so far 😊
