Hi everyone @Chasingsunsets @DownMoreThanUp and others…

something I’ve experienced just about less than 30 mins ago have made me upset

a random white man decided to throw some insults at me while we were waiting to cross the pedestrian road and I tried ignoring him. He even looked at me as well as down on my shoes/pants a few times each time after he said something to me. The only things I was able to catch from what he said were “yin and yang” (racist because I’m Asian) and “talkin’ to ya”. I immediately crossed another pedestrian road nearby and thankfully he didn’t follow me to continue attacking me.

im not sure what the hell this man is on but he obviously didn’t look like he was on drugs. He just looked like another regular man who just decided to be a d*ckhead for no reason

Hi @Blackcloud , I have just found your post from the weekend and read it in full. I am so sorry this happened, and very sorry I did not know this post earlier. Saturday was the day I was driving interstate, so I was not on the forum much at all after the drive. Often I have only had time to check where I have been tagged directly, and do not check the social-group chat threads otherwise (too many posts to keep up with). Please do always feel you can tag me in a post like this; I do want to know and have the opportunity to support you. I am so sorry if you felt ignored because I did not see and respond. I hope you can accept my apology and a hug? 🤗

You definitely did not deserve the way that man treated you. I also would have felt quite scared in that situation. I wish the world did not have people who act and say racist and hurtful things; it does not good to anyone (not even the person doing them). I often wonder whether there is some underlying trauma or mental health challenges when people act in such unprompted ways to strangers. Sadly that doesn't help with feeling safe though!!

I totally understand why you would not feel safe again to be walking in that area, or any similar area - especially alone. I am a white female and I often feel unsafe walking places alone when I hear people talking in unusual or abuse ways, even when it is not directed at any individual - let alone if it were!

Is there anything you can think of that would help you feel safer in the city when you do go there? (within the law that is!)

I know as a teenager, waiting alone at night to be picked up after TAFE, I felt safer knowing I had something small in my hand that I could use to defend myself if someone attacked me. I never had to use it, but I felt better knowing it was there - along with also my mobile phone in case I needed to call for help.

I wonder whether something like a pocket-torch could be useful to shine in someones eyes if they got too close and you needed an opportunity to get away? Or a button-alarm that would draw attention from other nearby people and alert them that you needed help?

Let me know what support I can offer. I am here if you want to chat about the feelings, your concerns, etc. I genuinely do care.
