Talking through trauma and PTSD

The me no one knows - SI warning

The me no one knows - SI warning

I’ve made this space to have somewhere safe to talk and share things.

to chat with every one who has shown concern about and for me.

I have spent almost all my life masking, from as far back as primary school (possibly younger).

almost no one knows the real me. Not sure if I even know the real me.

my past is filled with lots of darkness. People I’ve tried to speak with during my life either don’t believe me or don’t want to know

@AlwaysMyself @Bunniekins @Captain24 @Cuddlebear @rav3n @Jynx

hiding behind the mask pretending nothing is wrong. Putting on brave face whilst inside I’m a shattered pieces. Feeling lost and completely alone. No one wants anything to do with me. Relatives only contact when they want something. Going to bed every night hoping to never wake again

No worries @Flutterbug9 glad you are ok - please don't hesitate to reach out to us if you ever have concerns about something that's happened on the forum. We are always around to help unpack or assist in sorting things out, including conflicts and such; but sometimes we may not realise what's happened or we might read something and interpret it differently and not realise if it's upsetting for members. I trust you to know yourself and know when you might need us to step in 💜

Changed my mind with shopping trip this morning and went to Kmart, managed to get some sports bras. More laundry. 🤣

thinking of something you said about chest size causing back pain. Remembered coworker from many years ago that had same issues and had reduction surgery. Anything to help reduce pain

saw on one of your posts about Auslan. Is it online or in person course? Do you able to put your skills into use at times? I enrolled in TAFE course, maybe 20yrs ago, something to do with communication. Meant getting off train after full day at work, doing the course and finally going home. Very long day. Somehow as part of that I got to me guy who is blind and had 2 guide dogs, one of which was retired. I also started doing AUSLAN course on the weekends. Didn’t finished the TAFE course, thoroughly enjoyed the AUSLAN course and open days at place where course was run (open days were great to try out things from class plus try to learn new signs, everyone only signed for hour or 2 couple times during the day)

things with my friend the other day where I thought I had made mistake in sharing. Her sms reply included things about ‘shattered psyche changing people’, ‘nothing she is interested in’. With both know bits about each others past including trauma.

different friend, bit of a strange lady, had a cat die in October and still not fully coping. SMS yesterday asking if we can catch up sooner rather than later. Meeting for morning tea at local cafe in couple weeks.

better get into these chores. Not sure if or when I’ll be on forums next few days, want to take some me time.

atm, you have any plans for today and next few days?

trust is there or I couldn’t have shared. Good for me to deal with the anxiety brain discomforts. Not going to get any easier if don’t have options to help me take next steps. 🤗💜

😍🤗. I am glad I can help be that for you my friend. And I think that is a great perspective also -- that sometimes the gap between being able to respond can provide a safe growing space to practice coping with short-term anxiety brain discomforts because you can be assured I will be back and that I care. And if for any reason this changes, I would let you know (unless it's an accident that I can't have foreseen that rends me incapable lol, a former boss used to say people always needed to store documents/progress in shared locations "in case you get hit by a bus" and someone needed to take over work on it.)

My dogs are currently on their walk - but the walker was 45min late today, so I will probably have to leave home (20min) before they return. Luckily mum is back home now so she will be able to receive the dogs back for me if I am not home. 😊 Else my pups would only have been able to get a 30min walk not a 60min one.

@Flutterbug9 I am glad your GP does regular check-up appointments and tests 🙂. Neutropenia would carry a lot of risks, especially during the most severe covid years as well as every cold/flu/covid season and other outbreaks.

I don't know much about it; is there any treatment they can do? Do blood transfusions help at all? (I am assume not long-term, and would only help if you needed extra neutrophils during an infection? But even then -- do the blood donation products include neutrophils or only the platelets, plasma, etc?)

Yes, knowledge and awareness of trauma and impacts and especially childhood exposure has improved a lot thankfully. But I also suspect there is a lot that still does not get actioned too sadly. Through doing my volunteering with the youth mentoring I have become a bit more aware of very subtle indicators that something might be going on at home - but of course sometimes these things are not. e.g. if a young youth talks about staying overnight at another friend's house during the week. In the past I would have assumed from a comment like that that they were just having a sleepover or that the parent was away (work, sick family, etc). But now I know to ask a bit more, gently, around whether it was a planned stay at the friend's, and how they felt about it, and if they want to talk about the reasons for staying over. Make it safe to say if it was purely social, but also give space for them to mention if it was because of an argument/fight/DV, etc.

Watching penguins from in a tent sounds so nice 😍. As a young child, we would sometimes go to Victor Harbour (SA) to watch the penguins come ashore after dark. But it wasn't somewhere we could camp overnight, always had to make the long walk back to the car and parents drive home. I haven't gone to watch penguins for a long time, maybe I should do that next time I visit melbourne or adelaide.

Oh, are you good at snooker/pool?

I enjoy the very few times I have played with a friend (less than 5?). I am not very good at it - with how hard or soft I need to hit the ball, and with aligning the cue to actually go where I intend. But I understand the mathematical geometry of how a ball would need to be angled to rebound.

I am trying to recall your favourite colour, but I am not sure what it is?

Mine is purple. Prior to that, it was black and greys but I was always told they weren't a colour. So cadbury-purple, and then deep-emerald-green. Then I was told they were the "gay colours" and I shrugged and said maybe that is because gay people (stereotypically) have better fashion sense. 😋 I never let people saying purple & green were the gay colours get to me!

I will be off to my remedial massage appointment in a few minutes, so I shall stop here for now. 😊 As you know - I am not ignoring the rest, just working through at my pace. 😊 Your anxiety is a valid response of your childhood and other experiences; I am reminding you that your logical brain can help to reassure this vulnerable part of you because it can know that it is safe and being heard and cared about. Re-read this as many times and as often as you like/want. 🤗

Aiming for brief reply, won’t get things done otherwise. 🤣

neutropenia = low neutrophil. Lots of possible causes, everything from leukaemia to unknown reasons (I’m the latter). I’ve been neutropenic for more than 10yrs and will never improve. My neutrophil rise and fall, everywhere between almost zero to about 2/3 minimum end of preferred range. Only thing Haematologist found 18mths ago was low Vitamin B12, common for neutropenia. If my neutrophil are consistently very low, next step would be hospital for few days for bone marrow biopsy possibly followed by meds.

penguins = Phillip Island. Victor Harbour, I’m jealous. 🤣

I play online snooker/billiard games to help try to keep technic knowledge reasonable. Has been decades since I’ve played in reality. Bullard tables and room where I live is, unofficially, deemed men’s area. Another issue I have.

favouite colours - we have to stop this. 🤣

my favourite colours in order are purple, rich deep emerald green and apricot. My take on the first 2 colours = purple is a sign of royalty, mystery, imagination, creativity, wisdom. (Queen Victoria and I share same birthday hence the royalty. 🤭)

Emerald green = loyalty, growth, new beginnings, balance, harmony. (Also my birth stone)

my update this morning was as I didn’t want you worrying if I’m not online for few days. As discussing with Tyme via email due to different matter, I’m not going anywhere. Will never intentionally do anything that would result in cats being here on their own. At times feel other people could take care of them better than I do, that’s different though

My type humour (hope bought get approved)

Felt strange walking though my high school for its 50yrs anniversary few years ago. Seeing rooms for onsite nurse plus doctor. School room completely allocated for children who opportunity to do self care activities instead of having to sit in lesson/s and unable to concentrate due to things at home being too heave to cope with. One corner having been altered to accomodate enclosed, one bed quiet room if teenager needed to sleep

logging off for awhile. Needing ice pack and gloves, extreme itch. Is a circle. Itch = scratch= makes area bigger= healing issues = itch. Upper arm, shoulder and half of chest atm.

Just read your posts from today - yep, take as much time offline as you need. 😊 I will continue to respond here, but instead I won't actively tag you on this thread (since it is your thread already!) so to reduce the emails you get and any feelings of pressure to respond. But message can wait here for you until you want to read them, without any pressure to read them or any timeframe to do so in. And I mean that.

I will continue to tag you in my other relevant messages on other threads for when you feel like the forum, so you have the choice (not obligation) and know that you are not being excluded by me 😊. But I also won't be expecting a response, because I know you are taking some time off. 😊

I love that our 2 favourite colours are the same 🤣 what are the chances? lol!

Love the idea of gloves. 😊 I wore soft gloves for a week or two when I had a medication reaction that gave me itchy bumps once - all over my body, gosh it was so annoying. So I am feeling for you and sending you care. I wonder what your gloves are made of 🙂 I used knitted ones (rather than leather, which would have been scratchy).

Hope the itching ebbs away day by day. I assume you would already know if there is any topical cream that could help reduce it / numb it.

I distracted myself earlier. Moved some things from today to tomorrow and vice versa. Currently doing some Lego whilst doing laundry.
Went to Kmart and came home will more than I’d planned on buy, all good. Allow fresh each day that way. Sports bras plus crop top styles with removal pads. Still getting used to the difference. Heaps easier to get to bottom of top opening washing machine first thing I noticed. No adjusting straps. Feels like I’m wearing nothing under tshirt

no issues about not tagging here. Emails are not a problem though as I’ve turned off all notification emails.

whatever gloves I find first, either knitted or cheap disposable ones. Use the disposable gloves for times I wear compression stockings.

Re: The me no one knows - SI warning

Very interesting re: your 2 male & 1 female cousins @Flutterbug9 . I wonder if it was a family-cultural thing that they weren't concerned about "personal space" and privacy? 🤔

Our Physical-Ed classes in high school were co-ed too. But the ones in primary school (year 6; 11-12yo) were segregated.

Love the mental picture of the cat being put in the bath with your dad 🤣 and it running out screaming 🤣. I've never thought about if they can swim... I assume they would be able to do a basic paddle to keep afloat instinctively? (like a dog, but perhaps a little less effective?)

... do your current cats swim? 🤣😂. Lucky cats don't have to have bath time lol, unlike most dogs.

I recall that for some cultures (e.g. German commonly) nudity is not such a taboo or uncommon thing - much less than Australian culture. When i learned this as a teenager it put the concept of nudity into a new light for me (a helpful one), where I could sort of rationalise that in some situations nudity and sexuality or privacy can be separated. This helps me a lot when I consider medical things.

But even then, I'm not sure a father would get fully undressed in front of a 10yo daughter 😳. The mother and daughter, or father and son, maybe? I think more of it in terms of locker-rooms, etc. Or for the Japanese in their sauna pools.

Do you remember when you realised that this was not normal for your friends?

Do you remember before this time at all? And if so, whether it instinctually felt odd or never questioned?
(I am just curious. There is not right or wrong. There are so many things in childhood I just assumed were "normal" until I realised many years later that it wasn't. And some things I'm not sure whether or not I realised were wrong - but perhaps something in my body did, because looking back realise there were a number of "trauma-clues" that just weren't realised. But I don't recall what I thought/felt at the time, and certainly didn't consciously cause me a problem until my early teen years when I started to learn about our bodies & sexuality, etc.)

No, my paternal grandfather was not safe. He SA the female grandchild and verbal inappropriate questions to the male grandchild. However I can be grateful both for it not being worse (I consider it "mild" for SA, but which of course in no way makes it OK or untraumatic; I just recognise there are much worse things that could have happened that would have been even more traumatic). He was opportunistic rather than premeditated as far as I can recall.

I relate to learning this too. I was always a very well-behaved child - compliant, polite, friendly, etc. Only complaint from teachers generally was if I was too talkative lol. But I had my own thoughts and perspectives on things, and a very strong sense of justice (still do lol). Similar to you, I used to stand up for myself if I perceived something was not fair - often that was OK with my mum, we could talk about it (even though at the end of the day she had the ultimate say). But to question my dad was not acceptable to him. I probably didn't learn quick enough (but then again, there was no physical violence other than 'smacking') to not answer back - I think I was about 14 before I had that control better lol. got into a lot of arguments with him. And after that, like yourself, I learned to keep it to myself and recluse into my room when I got home from school and stay there until dinnertime and then return again after. I'm not sure what age I started doing this, but I think probably from 12 or 13 I recall just staying in my room all afternoon. Weekends however I could not just stay in the bedroom all day, until I was older I think. I used to do my homework, then listen to music and cry - sometimes did some drawing but never felt able to express how I felt in drawings, not adequately. I recall doing a lot of drawing when upset in my room in year 7 (12yo) because i used some of the pictures on my art book the next year.

Oh wow, that would have been very scary waiting for the biopsy results for a few months! And whilst recovering from what sounds to be a major surgery too. Keyhole surgery is pretty amazing the different things they can now do by scope, where they used to have to do open surgery.

I feel grateful that (to my knowledge) all of my cysts are internal, and I assume small - enough that the PCOS does not require any interventions or removals. But I don't think I have a family history of them, but it could also just be that other family members haven't been tested. A number of my female relatives would have some physical indicators of possible PCOS, but some of them are the opposite to my indicators. Once again my PCOS is not the most common presentation type! lol. But I much prefer to be the atypical PCOS in this case 😂; much less painful or annoying/hassle.
