Yes they can. Some classes are very addictive. Some, are not addictive at all.

There are several classes of medication that are classed as anxiolytics.
The benzodiazepines and barbiturates are highly addictive and have long term effects.
SSRI's/SNRI/TCA are antidepressants and have very minimal long term effects.
Beta-blockers are sometimes used and can be used for long term, but do have some side effects.

I would go into details-- I love to know , I think we can`t say what the name of the meds are but I will ask @CherryBomb, who is our community manger and she id on tonight

i think some medications can be addictive and cause side effects, and i think some can cause liver damge but i think it really dose depend on the dose and what medication it is... itll probably be best to ask your GP, a psychiatrist as they are specialised in these medications even if its a one off appointment to see one or maybe you could try your pharmacists.
sometimes you can look up the specific medication that you are on and it can give you an idea of side effects etc but please remember that not everything you read is correct on the internet unless its from a trusted site such as the government websites so dont take all these into account.
sometimes its overwhelming for people to look up their medications so if you get overwhelmed easily id reccomend not looking it up as there is often heaps of information to look at

I found barbiturates to really mess with me, both. my big breakdowns - SI, suicidal behaviour and long stay MH hospital admissions occurred within 3months of starting barbiturates (anti anxiety medication), additionally, they are highly habit forming. I use to call them my 'little gold nuggets' lol. There's a lot online about drugs now. xox

@Former-Member, I don't want to be rude, but I'm surprised are you really being prescribed barbiturates?
It's very unusual to get prescribed them these days.
P.S. I apologise for my excitement. I get a little overexcited talking about pharmaceuticals.

5-HT, don't worry, I expect it here now. Maybe I'm too blunt or something. Just be yaself. Yep, my first breakdown in th 80s and the second in 2011 - but I have noticed since signs up since saying they won't prescribe them now. Interesting both my hospital admissions in 2011 they left me on high dose barbiturates. It was me who decided to get off it when I read it might be causing invasive SI. I don't know how drug co's get away with it. Or doctors.
