Self care by growing a garden

Self care by growing a garden

A SOS to any green thumbs out there

I have always found gardening to be therapeutic and it has given me great joy. However, after a major crisis with Mr Darcy's health I have not had been able to get back into it. Have other gardeners suffered from a similar hiatus and how have you recovered and got going again?

Darcy

PS have a spot that needs filling any recommendations for a 1m high cool climate white flower plant?

Hi @Anna88
Here is the gardening thread. I saw some mini daffodils in Woolies the other day and must say I was tempted but resisted and am regretting it now.

Potted flowers are great, I give them rather than a bunch as the flowers generally last longer and you can usually put the plant out in the garden. With daffodils you let the leaves die down naturally and save the bulbs for next year. They probably won't flower as early next year, the shop ones are raised under artificial conditions to mimic colder weather so they are available for sale early in the season.

Chysthanthemums are a good example of this - they are out now in pots and bouquets for Mother's day - a plant that keeps on giving and as a bonus potted ones are usually cheaper. I believe in some European countries they are associated with bad luck in contrast to some Asian countries where they symbolise autumn and longevity.

I've used a wheelbarrow as chair from time to time. It's surprisingly comfy.

@Appleblossom
Are there any specific bird attracting plants at your place?

Peppercorn tree. Little John Banksia is now quite big. My lilac is too small and the apples are small, but I have trellises all around and birds are often around. I had to pull out an old wattle. My land is tiny so my gardening has spilled out and I have taken over the end of my court!

Enough trees to enable birdlife to brave the reigning tomcat. @Former-Member

The zoo is also near an international bird sanctuary so I am gradually learning more.

My mum curses the neighbours cat visiting her place @Appleblossom she has a bird bath well out of their reach.

Large trees are not so common in back yards now block sizes have shrunk.

When we have planted deciduous trees bare rooted, I have been delighted that it has not taken long for a bird to land on one of the twig like limbs.

The Peppercorn is large and a few of its self seeded offspring have been encouraged.

The zoo is has a cat program but I am sick of being putdown for being a cat owner. I 've pulled my weight enuff in that direction. I tried to convert my remaining 16yo ole tom into an indoor cat to help monitor his weight and thyroid and protect birds but it was just torture for him and I.

The zoo also has a progran for

when balloons fly seabirds die

... trying to stop use of baloons for parties and change to blowing bubbles.

Oh my... @Appleblossom When will it end?

Many of these people & organisations won't stop until everything is banned.

Cracker night, unregistered cats (now it costs $250 to buy a cat), supermarket plastic bags (now banned in WA June 2018).

Ban balloons now, that's ridiculous...

My cat Jelly is inside (has never been out), & she has badly damaged my doors etc, scratching them.

She's been howling & banging doors all night, several nights in a row - I've been really sleep-deprived, & am at my wits end (as a result).

My subsidised gardening service will hopefully come (for 1st time in 6 months) tomorrow morning. If they don't turn up as requested, before I leave for work (8.20am) - they refuse to do any work when I'm not there.

I cannot afford a full-cost service, I don't earn enough. Yet this service is unreliable (in turning up), & will not commit to a time.

I'm supposed to stay home for 4 hours (time-window) waiting for them. Which they know I cannot do, because of my work schedule.

I need a large tree branch removed from my clothesline, which came over the fence from my neighbour's tree. It's been there for several months.

Fingers crossed that they do turn up.... One time I had the day off work, & I did wait the full hours for the gardening service (that day) - they still did not turn up...
