Self care by growing a garden

Self care by growing a garden

A SOS to any green thumbs out there

I have always found gardening to be therapeutic and it has given me great joy. However, after a major crisis with Mr Darcy's health I have not had been able to get back into it. Have other gardeners suffered from a similar hiatus and how have you recovered and got going again?

Darcy

PS have a spot that needs filling any recommendations for a 1m high cool climate white flower plant?

I've got a Chilean Guava in a pot @Former-Member. While I decide where to plant it. 🙂

I've been pulling up weeds and feeding them to the chooks, some more pruning, and another lot of seedlings planted. Discovered yesterday's batch eaten off, with possum paw prints in the soil next to them. Grr! They're not bitten all the way off, so they should regrow, but I've now put plastic baskets over the top of it and today's lot to protect them.

Went to a funeral today and want to acknowledge the kindness of the person who we farewelled today.

After Mr Darcy attempted, he was in hospital for 5 months this friend paid for a gardener to help me maintain our yard.

The irises that we divided yesterday originally were divisions that came from her garden.

@Former-Member, I'm imagining that those irises will forever after be known in your household as the "[Friend's name] Iris". I hope it was a good farewell.

Hello @jb3

Nice you could get out and do a bit in the garden today @Former-Member and @Smc , it's been too wet for gardening here.

Hi @Former-Member. 🙂

We got some steady rain overnight, but it finished up mid morning. I didn't do a lot today, but I did put three packets of seed I bought about a month ago into starter pots. I've almost given up on punnets. They're so shallow, if I don't get to planting out in time the plants end up overcrowded, or dry out too much.

I've got soooo many seed packets around, and what with me going flat and unmotivated, a lot of them will be out of date by now. I'll try planting some of them anyway. I've had 20 year old seeds send up a few plants before now, so it's worth trying.

Hi @jb3. 🙂 Want to tell us a bit about your garden?

Mine's in inland Victoria, a bit frost prone, very messy but productive. I usually favour food plants, but at the moment I'm doing a big flower garden plant up ready for springtime. I'm wanting some pick-me-up colour. 🙂 (The vegs will still go in too, but they'll be jostling for their places with assorted poppies, carnations, cornflowers, larkspurs, delphiniums etc.etc.etc.)

Re: Self care by growing a garden

I have mostly well-established Grevilleas, Melaleucas, small Euchalypts, 2 small Olive trees, a Carob tree, a Jacaranda, a Banksia, & Acacias (Wattles) - I planted them all myself.

I planted over 100 plants, over a 10 year period - only a portion of them survived (they're mostly happy now).

Then I lost my Gardening Mojo - so I haven't planted virtually anything new, in several years.
