Self care by growing a garden

Self care by growing a garden

A SOS to any green thumbs out there

I have always found gardening to be therapeutic and it has given me great joy. However, after a major crisis with Mr Darcy's health I have not had been able to get back into it. Have other gardeners suffered from a similar hiatus and how have you recovered and got going again?

Darcy

PS have a spot that needs filling any recommendations for a 1m high cool climate white flower plant?

@Smc

I understand totally.

Gardens that can look out for themselves every now and then are good.

Especially when our whole existence is consumed by looking after someone else

And I have lost a few treasures in heat, and in frost.

But, bottom line. its a healthy hobby that gives us a small amount of joy . So , I am proud of my little garden. And I think we should all be!

Would love a vege garden, but mostly indoor plants here. Looking after them does bring joy though, so beautiful to see them grow and change.

@Smc was thinking pansies with asparagus, not onions with asparagus 😀.

@Sheila how do you keep the weeds down in your patch?

@Ali11, there's one guy I follow on FB, James Wong, who's a botanist, and lives in a little London flat. He's gotten very adventurous with his indoor gardening, including growing plants in his coffee table, and making a pond garden in a biggish glass fruit bowl.

I'm not good with indoor plants, although if I didn't have any outdoor space for a garden, I'd probably organise myself to look after them a lot better. I would love to have a conservatory attached to the house, to grab some extra sunshine in winter. Then my potted "frost tenders" could live there during the cold months. I've got a leaf cardamon plant, a small curry tree and a few other plants that are really too tropical for Victoria, but I generally manage to nurse them through the cold months.

"Done! Behold the ‘terraritable’. A last resort when there are literally no other surfaces left for houseplants in your tiny flat." James Wong"Well, I’ll be .... My ridiculous experiment with growing waterlilies in a fruit bowl actually worked out in the end!" James Wong

@Determined, maybe the trees just need some TLC. 🙂 Citrus don't much like our winters here, although I've seen some healthy and productive ones in spots that get a bit of shelter- near a house, or in a well hedged garden. I know some plants react badly to wind chill, so maybe that's even more of a factor locally than frost.

Regular feeding, no grass around base as root competition, white oil for a number of pests also = happy citrus @Determined

Re: Self care by growing a garden

A busy gardening day today, finished pruning the rosemary today along with a standard rose, gooseberry & Chilean guava.

Mr Darcy dug up some irises for me (called Dutch iris but are a rhizome not a bulb) and I edged a garden bed with them. I also planted some bog sage divisions.

Trimmed a hedge and pulled up some weeds around the asparagus. Mr Darcy kindly picked up all the piles of weeds/prunings and then mulched a few beds.
